Perfect is really just for landscape. You get the nice water and more individual trees but thats about all.

I love the way that Perfect looks...but Excellent mode is the best performance/looks combination.

The New IL2 Database is Coming Soon!

It is to me, Bearcat. I'm running a less capable rig than your's (XP1800 not OC'd, 3/4GB of PC2100, 9700 Pro AIW) and I was thrilled when the 4.1 Catalyst drivers finally solved the Perfect mode issues. I usually fly online co-op missions with only my own squadmates and maybe a few close friends. Several of us design the missions and we keep in mind those factors that impact framerates. We still get them (mostly large numbers of parachutes from downed bombers or low altitude over large cities like Berlin). Otherwise my framerates are smooth and enjoyable. Naturally, this is all subjective and the next guy (or gal) may have a differing opinion, but I enjoy Perfect mode. I wouldn't be happy if I bought a high-end videocard and couldn't max it out and enjoy what the sim has to offer.

02-21-2004, 08:37 AM
I like the way the water looks and the colours seem much better ,strange as this may seem the game actualy seems to run smoother for me although I havn't checked the framerates .

The only problem I have with it is that ground textures on the grass and trees don't get drawn properly sometimes .
Example stretch marks (only way to describe it) on grass and the forests have strange star like patterns running out from the centre kind of like what you would get from a fragmentation shell explosion .

The water looks great though and I guess I can live with it .

in perfect mode, you have a better visibility distance too

02-21-2004, 09:02 AM
I want to play in pefect mode.
But it seems like it's for next generation CPU and VGA.
Currently running 40~80fps consistently in excellent but it drops down to 20~40 with perfect. (thou some guys say 20~40 is enjoyable.)

I've never seen a 9500Pro play FB but I wondered if the9800Pro was a worthy upgrade decision. I know stating my experience wouldn't have been considered by you, but I went from an FX5900 non-Ultra to the 9800Pro and the difference is not worth the money. I had no choice though, I destroyed my 5900.

I do like the card even though its limits are obvious. Up until recently I played perfect and and enjoyed much of it, but I've gone back to excellent. Like others I actually like certain visuals better, not to mention an increase in frame rates. My system is almost exactly the same as your's.

If your budget was limited to around $200 than I think you really had no other choice for some improvement. If its possible for you to return it and continue to save, the R420 would be a definite upgrade, worthy for the future.

Hello, all

I've been playing F.B. for the best part of a year now, but perfect mode eluded me 'til now.

I couldn't even begin to tell you what rig I'm using; what I can say is that for me, downloading direct x 9 seems to have been essential.

Prior to this, fb performance was shoddy to say the least in perfect mode.

And yup, now that I've managed it, that water does look very impressive.

On the minus side...

Frame rates down, I suspect. Would that account for the jerky movement?

Grid-like patterns at the water's edge.

UQMG unplayable in perfect.

Err... that's it.

So I'm in with the majority.

Whine? No way. FB is still the most entertaining thing I do with a computer.

02-21-2004, 10:25 AM
i enjoy perfect mode in offline campaigns but not online, the frame drop is to big
but offline well it just looks better overall
the water looks great and if you set the trees
in the config at 3 you get the mass tree rendering and the landscape is more alive to me and the visebilety is just better IMO
oh and the framedrop with perfect in the wintermaps is not much but you still get those nice mass rendered trees

im doing an average of 35/45 with perfect depends on the map
and that is more than enough for me

I'm running "Excellent", with only a P4 1.9, 768DDR PC2100 RAM, and a little ol' GeForce 4 MX420 64mb graphics card and XP Home, with no problems. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

I'm running a older Dell 8200 with 2.5g processer, 1g memory, Auidgy 2 sound card and a Ati 9800 pro graphics card and I get a little sudder or frame freeze with heavy action. But over all in perfect mode it runs fairly smooth.
And I still get a kick out of the waves on the ocean side of the different coasts. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Just out of curiousity, what is your framerate
(or average Black Death track framerate?)

02-21-2004, 02:13 PM
Got a 2500+ Barton @2800 as well, on a Abit NF7-S 2.0 with 1GB 333 RAM and a 9800.

Perfect is worth it. Getting 40-80fps av, dropping down to 30 eventually when there's quite some action. It hardly gets below 30, and that's all I need.

Over Excellent, Perfect has the much nicer water (which hardly drains fps BTW), a noticably higher visibility range (which really counts when flying at 6000+, especially for navigation), highly detailled landscape even at the "visibility edge" (which drains most fps of the whole stuff) and a richer, brighter coloration of the landscape. Plus I've got Forest=3 in conf.ini which adds lots of trees. Just looks better then when groundpounding.
The only drawback I see besides the fps thingy is the contrast between those dots and the ground. Because of the brighter landscape it's hard to see enemy planes. Actually, the best settings for FR are landscape details 3rd best and landscape lighting 2nd best, and max. 1024 res on a 17".

02-21-2004, 02:21 PM
I could run it on perfect with ease... but from altitude water on excellent looks kind of more real then on perfect. Maybe it just me. I play all exellent 1280x960x32@85HZ 4AA, 8AF and with 4.10s it looks stunning http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif Average FPS in high 50s low 60s in the cockpit... -10FPS if i`ll do perfect :0

Kozhedub: In combat potential, the Yak-3, La-7 and La-9 fighters were indisputably superior to the Bf-109s and Fw-190s. But, as they say, no matter how good the violin may be, much depends on the violinist. I always felt respect for an enemy pilot whose plane I failed to down.

While your rig is not slow, it is minimum
for perfect mode.
I am running a P4 Extreme at 3.488ghz
and a ATI 9800XT 256 video card.
Perfect runs great and looks far better
than excellent mode, especially in the mountains.
I average in the 60's on FPS and rarely
drop to 20 low over the cities.
On line I run in the 50fps average at 1200x1600 32 bit color.

I get a 7168 3D Mark 2003 score.
I also get 148 over 84 in the UT2003 benchmark
in 1200x1600.

It takes a lot of oats to run perfect mode

i run perfect all the time, but get fecked up stretchy textures, and sea whitelines http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

02-21-2004, 05:59 PM
Its not worth it.

Unless your PC is a uber beast, its not going to be viable.

Although the sea and rivers, and some textures look a heck of alot better, excellent mode is fine.

With perfect mode on I get about a 1/2-1/3 of the PFS of what I do in excellent.

Eh, mates! What's the good word?

It is absolutely worth spending every last penny you have ... getting a second mortgage.. selling the kids.. etc... to be able to play Perfect mode smoothly.

Of course when you are locked in a dogfight with someone most of us don't even notice how nice the ground, the water, the trees, etc.. look.

Honestly.. I think that IL2 FB was created solely as part of a huge conspiracy by the computer parts manufacturers to get us to spend as much money as possible.

The game is beautiful.

I've got a Radeon 8500LE on an 1800+

I haven't tried perfect in a while, but it was pretty much unplayable before. Cuts framerate down to about 1/3 of its normal speed. I find everything looks a lot different with it on though, land, water, lighting, everything. Water is what mostly kills it, flying around land is ok, but if theres a river anywhere around it starts to chop pretty good.

That and i've lately started playing at 1200*900 in order to get a better look at distant aircraft and easier to read instruments. So if it was slow before, it will be a slug now.

02-22-2004, 05:15 AM
I'm using a mix of excellent, flat, and perfect settings but get "average" of ~40fps according to the meter but it doesn't make sense cos for most of the time its like ~15fps in the heavy cpu parts. Athalon 1700+

First time I played a track except for that BnW intro which I disabled long ago. That was Awsum, that La~5 taking down that Fw~190 or something, dropping it into the forest.

On my GF4 4200 128 the rivers look a little strange, a bit too reflective. What I do like about Perfect are the extra trees that appear, making things look far more realistic to me.

I do appreciate the fact that before the patches I couldn`t run at all on Perfect, I think he`s done it by removing the leaves animation thatwas originally there. And why not, no-one even noticed it unless they were parked right up to a tree. Now I`ve done a few missions online with it and can fly no trouble at all.
But I do find myself switching that off offline to free some FPS.

Personally, I don`t use it much, maybe about 30% of the time.

(I use a an Athlon 2100. 1Ghz meg).

The Fights continue out of the Servers...

in perfect mode the water (and the ice on winter) looks much better than in excellent, but the river banks has the strange artifact-like things that i know many othes have.

In excellent the rivers look ok, but the distant woods got some rectangular lines that doesnt look very good. I have the 4.1 drivers.

for battles I usually prefer excellent for the increase in fps.
