View Full Version : What Do You Think Could Improve the Terrain

Im just wondering, what easy changes do you think should be made to the terrain to make it more realistic and give an overall nicer look.
My ideas would be in stead of random trees over large areas of plains, put in long lines of trees around roads and around fields. And, to change the color of the grass in certain areas so its not the same color for all of russia http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I agree that the grass color is rather the same for alot of maps. My suggestion is to increase the color palette and increase the mesh (elevation) detail as some mountains are too simple polygons and some places on Normandy map look flat where there should be bluffs. Would also help when landing as many aairfields are nearly invisible until you zomm in a lot or are right over them.

IMO, Better trees

The simplest and most effective may be different colored trees (red, orange, yellow, etc) though I think Oleg said it would not be accurate for Russia or something to that effect. Maybe on Western maps.

More BIG maps of Moscow size or larger...

...with fewer buildings to protect the Mental Health of the Map Modders. If they can make Big maps by leaving out Small houses, I can spend money for that. And such maps will load faster and run more smoothly too.

Snow. It's Russia for cripes sakes! Every map should have a snow map to go with it. On those maps where snow would not be realisticly present, a winter landscape, i.e. trees w/o leaves.

The forests should be visible in low altitude flight, not only from above...

The forests from medium to high altitude: too two-tone and patchy. Better road & ground textures in cities.

Oh, and the fact that the maps don't include Malta...

I don't like the fact that I can put my bird down wherever I please. I want stones that'll tip her over. They don't have to actually make 3-d stones cause the fps hit would be too high, but as long as the ground looks stony and produces the same effect. I also want the grass to be more than it's current monotone green. The fact that aircraft were actually given camo markings indicates that the real terrain wasn't even close to uniform green. Now that really matters, not just from an eye candy P.O.V., but also for tactical reasons.

Naked babes on the beaches you could impress doing fly-bys...

No - everything but the forests looks fine to me. But it would be cute if you could crash into the trees outside the forests - would make take offs & landings more real imo. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

I guess we are both outed now.

S. All Gents!

One "vertical" layer for the first line of trees around the forest and no more pop-up trees, houses or other 3D objects.

more elevation variance... and redoing the rivers.

Now it seems a bit silly if you destroyed a bridge, near the end of the river. the briefing says that it was a very important bridge and now the enemy offensive is halted. If I was the enemy ground commander, I should drive around the river instead of over it.

Two things spring to mind, one is the roads, sort them out so a diagonal one does not have to zig zag up the map... all the roads are straight sections with sharp turns, fixing that would help, also as said elsewhere, add a sides to the edges of tree clumps, you can fly into a forest on takeoff without seeing it http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif..................oh and the other useful thing to me would be to turn off the collision modelling for the ground http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I think the terrain is great looking! You don't really have to change anything. But, if you must, I have noticed though that some things get a little weird at ground level, like "blocky" clouds just above the horizon and trees without trunks. I agree that terrain should be made rougher so it is difficult to land anywhere else other than runways. More detail/animation on ground targets would be ok.

Whatever you guys do just don't incorporate the Lock-On engine. Where Il-2 runs nicely on a Athlon-xp 2200 with Radeon 9500 pro with 512megs of ram, Lock-On runs like a Yugo making it almost unplayable (unless you cut back the graphics which defeats the whole purpose).
