View Full Version : I'm worried about cannabalism with the Pacific Fighters

I'm happy to be getting it but what is going to happen to the online servers when this baby busts loose?

By the time its released we will have IL-2, Forgotten Battles, AEP, and The Battle of Britain. My perception is that many newcomers to flight sims are confused by the sheer number of titles that exist today around the IL2 base. Will this just make it worse? Will this be a deterrent to others making the leap to Flight Simulators?

Are there going to be enough people to play online? Given the relatively low numbers of people on Hyperlobby today playing FB's AEP (200 is not many), will this just lower the overall quality and quantity of people on each server?

I really don't see the release of Pacific Fighters raising the overall number of flight simmers and am a little worried about the future of our beloved game.

These are just my thoughts I'm looking for yourshttp://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

First of all, IL2 is simply obsolete, almost no one still plays it. AEP was an addon for FB, some bought it and some didn't. BoB is a totally new stand alone sim that likely won't hit the shelves until 2006 or 2007, by then FB/AEP will likely be long dead. This pacific sim is clearly based on the IL2/FB engine but looks like it will be stand alone like FB is to IL2. I like the idea of a new pacific sim but I'm concerned about the types of planes that will be included. Given Oleg's record he will almost certainly forget about a super important plane. Hopefully it won't be one that I care about but with my luck it will be http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif. I predict my favorite pacific theatre plane, the F4U, will be forgotten.

There's nothing to worry about. Only a small number of Pacific Island tribes practice cannibalism. All the same, keep your sidearm handy.

You can just about stick a fork in IL2.... shortly everyone online will have the AEP...even the diehard unfathomables who refuse to get it at this juncture. Boe is an add on of just missions to FB so even if you dont have it you can join a server that is running a BoE campaign. If PF is an add on you will just see different servers.. there will always be Eastern & Western front servers in this sim. The planes are just too good and too much fun to fly. I think if nothing else Oleg & 1C will have a lock on WW2 sims till CGI quality sims become available on desk top rigs. Say another 5 years or so.

It's my contention that the absence of many on HL (or UBI for that matter) is due to the unreleased dedicated server. There are many servers that will only run the sim this way and they are uncharacteristically empty as a result. When the dedicated server is released, there will also be a patch for Aces. This will likely bring out the regulars and rejuvenate the genre.

No fear mate!

more AC, more maps, more features. I fail to see the downside.

And save the last bullet for yourself . . . .

My impressions of the last two months revolve around dawns. Pink dawns, grey dawns, misty, rainy and windy dawns, but always dawns; first light. Shadowy Spitfires and quietness . . . . Geoffrey Wellum, First Light.

Right, you'll want to avoid bailing over new guinea. I cannot imaging they'll forget the corsair - my fav too - though I think the Hellcat might be quite nice as well.

I noticed the mention of the four flyable B-25's in the Pacific Sim announcement. I wondered if this will eliminate them as freeware patch addons for AEP. Hmm.

First of all, BoB is scheduled to release in early 2005 (may be delayed, but will come out in 2005). Second of all, the F4U is being modelled already, and I saw a bunch of updates on the netwings forums (it looks good). I thought it was going to be for FB, but I guess its for PF.

I likewise have small concerns about which new planes are for what.. I am looking forward to the ju88 -but is that going to be released as an addon to AEP, or is it going to be held up and only released for BoB? I will end up owning all of it (damn you Oleg you sick genius).. but
I also was wondering about the B25 - will it be held up for the pacific sim now?..

We're supposed to get the Ju-88 along with the B-25s in around summer in the form of a patch. Of course, that was before the announcement of PF, I don't see why it should change.

heywooood
03-31-2004, 02:37 PM
$$$$$? maybe because the patches are free and the others are not?.. I'm just wondering.

Can anyone recall if the B-25s have ever been promised to be patch-released as flyable?

The Ju 88 is a no-brainer; we have had an AI version all along, and making it flyable only in PF makes no sense at all (unless the games are compatible ::fingers crossed:http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif.
Prolonging relase of flyable B-25s does make good sense, sort of.
However, I think releasing them as flyable for AEP in a patch won't do much to deter potential PF buyers. Perhaps a case could be made to Oleg on this basis?

Is there anyone here that would take flyable B-25s just in AEP and not buy PF with its promised emphasis on flyable bombers? One would think releasing them sooner would only serve as a teaser for PF.

It seems to me that Pacific Fighters could have been released as eithe a 15.99 add on or bit by bit by patches.

I know Oleg and the developers have supported IL2 FB more than most developers support their games. But it would ba ashame to see the support for IL2FB going out the window as Im sure they will be concentrating on Pacfic Fighters with regards to the Patches.

This to me seems like the end of the road for continued support with regards to IL2 FB.

Oh well roll on BOB. Thats what Im after.

Ihttp://www.bluesnews.com/cgi-bin/articles.pl?show=673

Search on Google and there are several press announcements about BOB.

It should use a new engine with new AI etc. I bet PF will use that new engine.

Oleg please don't make ANOTHER WWII sim with PF. PLEASE make it an add-on to what you already have in FB. Making another non compatiable sim is not a good idea. I will buy PF as an add-on, I doubt it as a stand alone. I see a tremendous downside in a stand alone and a even more tremendous upside as an add-on. IMHO.

No F4U. That will blow. It will be there by the release I hope. The plane is a Legend. I think the kill ratio is like 11 japan planes downed to every 1 Corsair downed. Just would not be the pacific without her. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Don't count on it, PF will use updated FB engine.

Also F4U is probably going to be in the game, since the model looks finished (netwings forums).
