Hi, I just started playing IL2 (great game btw) and am interested in some add ons specifically to get some good offline campaign play. The problem is, I've heard of three different add-ons. I could use some advice as to which ones are available and where I can get them.

1. ACE expansion pack..I just bought this
2. Battle over Europe - all the sites say this is released but I can't find it anywhere
3. Combat Over Europe - is this the same as the one above? EBgames.com say it will be available this month while I thought Battle over Europe was already released
4. D-Day Expansion pack??

Please any help would be appreciated because I can't seem to find any current info on this stuff.

Just to be clear...

You do have a copy of IL2 Forgotten Battles Right?

If so then I believe the Aces addon is needed to get a ton of new planes and most of the online stuff is flown with the Aces expansion.

Everything else you've mentioned is basically a bunch of campaigns that have been added to IL2FB and I think some require Aces (could be wrong) but these are basically hand crafted high quality campaings. In addition I think they add a bunch of Skins as well.

Right out of the gate I would pick up Aces as it's the most common of all the addons and it will be at least a starting point for some of the others.

BOE or battle over Europe is your best bet and it includes a downloadable patch for aces online now http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

review and link to buying it at the bottom of the page here

Yes, I Have IL2 Forgotten Battles and the Ace Expansion Pack.

Thanks for the link to battle over europe - it looks great.

There is also another title called Combat Over Europe by GMX Media that had me pretty confused (link to retailer: http://www.ebgames.com/ebx/product/244251.asp)

It looks like the D-Day title is actually a CFS 3 add-on pack...Doh. That is why I was confused.

Can anyone comment on the Combat Over Europe product in comparison the the Battle Over Europe product (ie... I probably can only get one for now).

<<Disclaimer: I don't have either BOE or Combat Over Europe.>>

A short synopsis of how the two products differ is that "Battle Over Europe" primarily offers more of Starshoy's dynamic campaigns (written for the Normandy, Ardennes and Berlin maps) while "Combat Over Europe" offers historically researched scripted missions.

A simplified history of the development of the two products goes something like this: Starshoy (who created DGen dynamic campaign system for 'Forgotten Battles') and Luthier (aka Ilya, the guy currently developing 'Pacific Fighters') decided to collaborate on an add-on product. Both have access to Oleg Maddox ... Luthier constructed the Normandy and Ardennes maps under 1C:Maddox Game's tutelage, and those maps were offered freely in the FB 1.21 upgrade patch. This was neccessary in order to upload the new maps and objects into 'Forgotten Battles' so that that the 'Battle Over Europe' missions could work; however, the 'new' part of BOE was basically given away for free.

Meanwhile, another add-on developer (Leonard aka Viking1) had been working on a faked Battle of Britain add-on for FB using the Gulf of Finland maps and the Russian fighters as Spitfires. When patch 1.21 came out with the flyable P-51D and new maps, it allowed him to increase the scope of his own Western Front missions ... this became "Combat Over Europe." I don't know if the similar names between the two products was intentional or coincidence, but it has lead to a lot of confusion.

Of the two products, BOE is the 'sanctioned' one because it was created by third party developers influential in the IL-2 circle and loosely partnered with 1C:Maddox Games. It's creation also caused new maps to be put into the game, so some people will argue that it is fair to compensate Starshoy and Luthier for their work if you enjoy the Normandy/Ardennes maps and objects.

In "Combat Over Europe"'s defense, Leonard is also well-known in air combat sim circles for his freeware missions and tweaks, mostly for the CFS series. He has written product reviews for the Mudmovers site. And some people genuinely prefer hand-written missions over the DGen ones. I think his site is Combatplanes.ca -- there is a free Spitfire mini-campaign there and some COE sample missions.

Also, you may want to look into the 'Fall Blau' and 'Rebirth of HOnor' add-ons for FB ... I think they both have downloadable demos.

BOE is amazing and worth it.

There is also DCG ( Dynamic campaign generator). It will let you play campaigns from the Battle of Britain to the Pacific Theater. It is incredible. I suggest getting familiar with the core game first (along with BOE). Then exploring the world of DCG.

I for one play Pacific campaigns (tweaked in the mission builder).

Here is the link

The forums ( a wealth of info ) are located in the barracks section.

There is also a Battle of Britain campaign superbly done by extreme_one (Google it).

Also e-mail me with questions mk2@bellsouth.net when ever you get around to this in case you have problems.

IL2 FB is the greatest sim ever made.

Welcome aboard!
