You don't need USB plug in drive. Just a regular plain old hard drive about 10GB. Turn computer off, open the case, plug in drive in the Slave position on the cable, make sure drive jumpers are in Slave and Master position (or use "cable select" [CS] positions), and start up and copy your stuff over. Then turn off computer and unplug. A power problem can ruin all hard drives plugged in, that's why I keep my backup unplugged except when backing stuff up. Get a cheap hard drive from computer show...a local computer store may give you one (used). You need to use Window's diskmgmt.msc to Format the drive. FAT32 or NTFS file system. NTFS is better.

Buy your HDD online, bestbuy prices are outragous unless there are rebates involved. Try www.newegg.com

Yeah, 20$ is all you need to spend. 10GB is more than enough for a backup. Get two. I still say you can get them for free if you look around for used "junk" drives (10GB is considered totally too small now). For my old DOS Fortran software, I have all my stuff on multiple backups...about 15 hard drives around 1GB size (a safety freak here). Only a few bucks each now. (yes Athlon powered computers can boot up pure MSDOS 6.22 and its lighnting fast)

But...I never lose any kind of data :)

Kozhedub: In combat potential, the Yak-3, La-7 and La-9 fighters were indisputably superior to the Bf-109s and Fw-190s. But, as they say, no matter how good the violin may be, much depends on the violinist. I always felt respect for an enemy pilot whose plane I failed to down.

Well I may be crazy but I hate losing my data, and have vowed that I will do my best to prevent it from happening again.

So I use four matched HD's in a RAID 0+1 configuration. A fifth HD on IDE that is
a backup of the RAID drives, and recently added an external USB HD and use Drive Image 7
software to create frequent backup images.

It could still happen, (losing my data), but it sure ain't near as likely as most folks...

Buying used hard drives or power supplies is like buying underwear from goodwill... well, I hope that brings up a mental picture :-) Just watch out for Fujitsu MPF & MPG series drives, there's a bunch of them out there and every single one of them is defective.

Right now for quality drives I'd probably be looking at either Seagates or the Western Digital JB-series with the 8Mb cache on them (3-yr warranty & lightning fast). I had a terrible time with 40 gig Maxtors about a year ago, hopefully they've improved since (No clue about the reliability on the DiamondMax +9 series).

Also, if you're looking to do backups on a separate hard drive, invest in one of those removable IDE trays. You can use a regular hard drive with them, and you wont have to pop the sides off your computer to unhook the drive.
