.....I was really looking forward to this sim. I've wanted to fly a WWI sim ever since I read my first Biggles book!!!

go here for the semi-official word on the situation (http://www.simhq.com/simhq3/sims/boards/bbs/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=98;t=011483)

There are some who have suggested that 1C might be a good outfit to approach to complete the development on this, releasing it as a 1C product as the game is pretty far along in development as far as I am aware. But with PF, and BoB, and whatever else 1C are doing, it seems unlikely that they would want to take anything like this on in the near future.

Such a shame.

Now that is a shame http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

KoE was looking like a really good sim, more so for it covering the WW1 period.

Now I'm depressed http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/cry.gif

"As weaponry, both were good, but in far different ways from each other. In a nutshell, I describe it this way: if the FW 190 was a sabre, the 109 was a florett, or foil, like that used in the precision art of fencing." - G√ľnther Rall

Red Baron 3D is the closest we have, and it's very sad, as well as old.

I actually like Great War aerial combat better than World War Two. The reason I moved to Sturmovik was because of greatly superior realism in some areas.

There's just something about crude, fragile, hastily adapted aircraft with open cockpits that is lost in the efficient, heavy, specifically designed aircraft with much better technology.

Really sad news. WWI is one of the most interessting scenarios for a sim.

That's just how I feel, in the purist sense those were dogfights, and it required a load of hits with the small caliber ammo to being one down. I was also looking forward to it ...bummer.

Aye, I've seen that, but it doesn't quite inspire you to rush out and grab that game.

What it does do is fuel the desire for a hard core, suped up, totally cool WWI sim!!!!

Is there a chance that the completed 3D models could be submitted to 1C for addition to FB?

The modelers may have legal reasons for not being able to do that, but what a damn shame to see all that work go to waste. I've following the development of KOE since I first heard about it. Same thing that happened to Jane's Attack Squadron. The sorry thing is that when it was finally picked back up the graphics were dated, and although released by another company, . . . well, it was a rather poor showing . . . very buggy.

This is very sad news, indeed. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

That really sucks, I had already saw myself in the pit of N.17 with the DM & FM's equal to what we have here with FB/ACE

Well Red Baron 2 was an incredible sim for its day. Ground battles and such truely amazing. Then Red Baron 3d came along to improve upon the graphics unfortunately however losing much of the original as the 3d graphics did not address all aspects of the game (it assumed it would be patched).

Unfortunately, The Dynamix was bought up by Sierra, then made the decision soon after that "that particular sim was not worth pusuing"...and I believe dumped their entire flight sim division.

That was some time ago however, and if you fly RB3d you know the "players" have patched and added to the sim 10 fold. Their work truely amazing. Mostly because the code to really work with the game was refused to them as though some holy grail....SO they hacked away and really built a spectacular sim.

However, to make RB3d really work you need Glide, or a voodoo card....Once Glide became an outmoded graphic engine and the manufacturer went under folks could no longer get the cards THOUGH you can still find them rebuilt in mexico and shipped back to the US.

So again the players went to work, and a Glidos patch was developed allowing you to use better cards and have glide ability.

Yet the critical part of the game is now unable to be found itself.....The sim itself as it has not been manufactured for some time.

The patches from the players have made the sim comperable to some degree with modern sims, yet the last chink in the RB3d armor was exposed, that being todays PCs are simply too fast and tend to walk all over it.

So slowly, it is dying players wanting to progress and tired of the struggle with RB3d.

However, I find it sad and unfortunate someone like UBI or 1C has not taken note of it. WWI the true beginnings of ariel combat much of what was learned in those short 4 years still applied today. It is pure and simple, and WWI IMLTHO the real turning point for mankind as far as warfare goes.

I say UBI or !C in that I can only imagine the amount of work and difficulties it takes to make a sim. Yet what I think they are missing is a large contingent of players from RB3d that have already done much of the work for them. Models, research, actual war long campaigns and info all it would take, the leg work already done....Even the player base....

All it needing is for someone to take the information already there, collected and catagorized, and put it into an existing flight sim engine. Even the existing players who work on RB3d now I would venture would be thrilled to invest some of their time to help out....

Yet alass........Though one day, someone will decide to once again, perhaps exceeding UBI/1C's current engines......So I suppose it will be their loss, yet one day no matter who produces it, our gain

That's what I always used to think, until I started reading pilot stories. Those machines had no armor whatsoever, and the pilot was generally the thing that got hit first. I believe that pilot death was the leading cause of aircraft crashes, with engine hits being the second. Structural failure due to machine gun fire is almost unheard of in all of my readings, except for once when Manfred von Richthofen said that when he was having a bad day, he did not stop firing even after the pilot was dead, and the plane just went all to pieces. Also, one ace (Voss?) just exploded - they said that there was a sheet of flame and then his plane was gone, but for some fluttering scraps, the engine , and his body falling to earth. I'm guessing that his fuel tank was nearly empty and had a lot of vapor in it, as a hit on the ammunition doesn't sound big enough to cause the whole plane to disappear.

Anyway, all aerial combat simulators that I've seen have failed to model this pilot death well enough. People don't seem to realize that it was a leading cause of aircraft loss (although in World War Two, it was supposed to be fire that was the leading cause of aircraft loss). In games, like in Red Baron 3D, pilot death from enemy fire is a rare thing. In real life, I believe it was the usual thing.

I got RB II, then 3D, and followed all the mods through Full Canvass Jacket; but, alas, it just is too old now to work on my new hardware. I've given up the struggle to keep it flying. I'm dumbstruck no one has tapped that market again--there is so much going around about the Red Baron & company, and we are now heading for the 100th of the Great War. I want my Camel back. My wingman, Snoopy, just spends his days drinking root-beer now.

BTW...

Does anyone know how many WW1 vets are left (especially fliers)? You would figure they would have to have been born in 1901 or earlier. That would make them at least 103.

I don't think that there are any Great War fliers left. Even most of the World War Two fliers are moving on.
