View Full Version : Tier 1 - Your tactics for taking down convoys

As we all know, leveling weapons in Tier One takes a huge amount of resources. The most efficient way to gather resources in Tier One is raiding convoys. However, with the increased difficulty, this has proven to be quite a challenge and your old tactics may need some rework or replacement altogether.

So what's your Tier and how do you deal with convoys? I'll go first and share my approach (works fine up to Tier 20):

Video

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8qvVE8nJhtI

Approach

1. Locate a convoy of your choosing on the map and select it.
2. Spawn a chopper and fly towards the convoy, but don't go too near it yet.
3. Observe the convoys route on the map.
4. Select a point on the road about 1km ahead of the convoy. Preferrably not next to a base or checkpoint (for obvious reasons).
5. Fly to the point and land the chopper in the middle of the road. This will block traffic so you don't get run over.
6. Make sure you have equipped the Desert Tech HTI and any assault rifle.
7. Select a spot where you have clear view on the road ahead (approx. 600m is enough, but more is always better).
8. When the helo comes into view, take it down with the HTI (one shot). The rest of the convoy will now start to weave.
9. Destroy the leading escort vehicle with the HTI (one shot). Mind the truck. ;)
10. Destroy the tailing escort vehicle with the HTI (one shot). Mind the truck. ;)
11. Switch to the AR and pump some rounds into the trucks front. Use short bursts, be conservative and stop firing as soon as the driver gets out (you want full resources, not half). The driver usually gets out at about 75% damage, sometimes less.
12. Mop up the remaining forces and claim your resources.
13. Profit!

This really shouldn't take more than 3-4 minutes. If it's taking longer simply destroy it and settle for half resources (which is still quite plenty on later Tiers): it's better to collect 3-4 convoys at half resources than spend the same time chasing one convoy (while getting nothing).

Things that could go wrong with this setup

1. You miss one or more shots: no problem, just stay calm and focus on the chopper and the escort vehicles first. If the truck manages to pass you, just grab the helo and advance further up the trucks route and try again. Should be easier assuming you managed to take out at least one or some of the escorts. Don't fall into the trap of trying to get the truck first: the escorts will rip you apart. Remember that practice makes perfect so don't give up or ragequit if it doesn't work out the first time (or few times :P).
2. You damage the truck too much: too bad, only half resources for you. Still, better than nothing, so just move to another convoy and try again. Again: practice makes perfect.
3. Your friends from Unidad join the part: yep, that's pretty nasty and can escalate into a full blown war with attack choppers and reinforcements pretty quickly. I suggest a tactical retreat in this case. Remember that we're trying to collect resources in the shortest amount of time, not start WWIII. Better to leave the scene, fly/drive away and circle back for another run.
4. You think it's a good idea to use the minigun on the Armored SUV because it's such a formidable weapon that will surely rip everything in its path: no it's not, it shoots water. Don't use it, it's completely useless against vehicles in Tier 1.

There are of course many more tactics possible than just this one. Just pick whatever fits your style best.

Hope this helps. Discuss. :)

Hey TristanKay, excellent post! Thanks for sharing. I am going to move this to our Strategy & Tactics (http://forums.ubi.com/forumdisplay.php/1560-Strategy-amp-Tactics) forum. We would love to hear from other players how they tackle situations in game too!

Good Description, its the way I mostly do it, while sometimes trying to use EMP.

I just use the EMP drone to disable the convoy, then destroy the escort vehicles with a grenade launcher. All occupants in the first vehicle go up with it and the ones in the other only have time to get out before I hit the second one and still go up with it. Helicopters are rarely ever an issue for me.

It's pretty easy if you can get good LOS and just EMP the convoy, then HTI front and rear escorts + heli if any. move so you get to side view of the window of truck so you can shoot the driver and passenger as the front is usually armored. But in Tier 1 mode, you die so fast as soon as your are engaged, it's good to call in diversion and rebel support to take some of the heat.

Easiest way though.... HTI / grendade launcher everything and just take half the resources... lol

Thanks for the contributions so far. Here's a little vid I recorded putting theory in practice:

Yes, that's certainly a risk-free way of getting resources, just one-shot all the vehicles and move on. :D

How do you spawn a chopper in the main game? I know I can do it in Fallen Ghost's, but the main game????

You need to max out the Vehicle Drop (Rebel Support) skill by doing the relevant missions (I think it are the ones where you need to blow up the door to the stations, clear it out and hack the computer). At level 3 you are able to spawn the chopper.

In the mean time just steal one from SB.

Added some stuff to the starting post:

- At what damage level of the truck the driver usually gets out (roughly)
- Added video.

I just put C4 on the road in two spots: a couple c4 towards the front of where the convoy will be, and a couple c4 towards the back. This takes care of the two escort vehicles, although it takes a little practice to get the spacing right so that you don't destroy the main truck. After waiting for the right moment and setting off the c4, I just use my LMG to disable the main truck (since I do not carry a sniper rifle). I never want to stop traffic, since that can create more problems than it is worth. Plus it's easier to shoot the trucks when they are driving straight and aren't swerving around stopped civilian vehicles, so in addition to not stopping traffic, I also choose a straight path along the route. If it gets too hairy and the main truck starts to get away, having a nice straight view of it from behind makes it easy to stop.

And needless to say, the best convoys to hit are the ones with 5000 points but with no chopper escort. I know of at least three like this: one in San Mateo, one in Villa Verde, and one in Espiritu Santo.

Your method is exactly how I was doing it before but I kept running into situations where the driver would not scare out of the vehicle even after taken it to the limit of destruction. Or, in the more compact areas the driver would get out and either hide where I couldn't immediately hit him or Unidad would roll in and then the driver would get back in and attempt to drive off. I couldn't risk trying to shoot him because the convoy would already be damaged so I'd end up using EMP and trying to pull the driver out before he could try to drive off again, which is a pain if Unidad has rolled up.

So, I came up with this method to eliminate those variables

1. Begin with 400-700 meter distance ahead of convoy (you can do it closer but this allows plenty of time to set up)
2. Use "Spotting" via the drone
3. Mark the convoy driver and his guard for a sync shot (you can use the drone, scope, or binoulars)
4. EMP the convoy
5. Use the HTI to one shot all escort vehicles (the sync shot will have killed the driver and guard)
6. done

Results: no stress, no engagement, no convoy chase, easy & consistent farming technique, and happy gamer

Nice vid, good stuff! Personally I'm not a fan of the EMP, but if it works it works! And one could always do it with just the syncshot and no EMP.

Is the EMP always working for you, read some complaints about it not working? (Then again, that was probably in the same thread people claimed convoys were industructible and enemies always one-shot you, so perhaps I should have taken this with a grain of salt too ;)).

Thanks! Yeah, I tried it without the EMP and I kept having the convoy truck roll away. I even had it roll down the hill off the side of the road once haha! As far as the EMP not working, there is an issue but I'm not sure if it's intended or a glitch. I'm thinking glitch because it wouldn't really make sense otherwise. Anyways, you have to have line of sight on the vehicle for the EMP to start working. More accurately, I find you have to actually scope in the direction of the vehicle in question.

You can kind of see it occur in this new video if you watch the lead escort vehicle. You'll see that right before I scope in to shoot the helicopter, the lead escort actually starts accelerating even though it is currently affected by the EMP. However, as soon as I scope in all three vehicles immediately stop. This video isn't the best example, but trust me it's definitely an issue and I've seen it a hundred times if I try to EMP around a bend or over a hill.

The only other thing I can think of, that people may mistake as it not working, is that the EMP does wear off. I haven't clocked it but I'd guess the timer is about 30 seconds. My thought is that this was done to prevent frustration for players wanting to use vehicles that may have been caught in the blast radius.

I made another video just to show how quick, easy, and stress free this method can be for farming supplies.
1. "Spotting" via drone
2. Tag driver and guard for sync shot (via drone)
3. EMP
4. One shot all escort vehicles via the Desert HTI
5. Claim your prize

I apologise this is off-topic, but @Force58 - as @TristanKay said, you need to do the Network Relay Station side missions to upgrade the vehicle drop Rebel Support skill to get helicopters. Here's a handy guide:

The least complicated way to do those convoy missions for me is to find a spot 300+m away from the route and use the SR-1 (reason - 2 shots disable the truck without destroying it, 2 shots kill the heli - HTI kills with one shot every truck except food, so it isn't an option). Basically all I do is to hit the truck 2 times for the drivers to bail and give it up, shoot down the heli and then clean up with my rilfe and the sync shots. In Konani its extremey easy to do this. Once you hit the truck twice no NPC will dare to touch it and you have all the time in the world to get it.

I just take the easy route spawn a santa blanca helo equipped with rockets and blow the hell out of the entire convoy land and tag 😉

Iím willing to bet you have lost more than a couple doing it that way... what I do is below and Iíve NEVER lost a convoy doing it this way Enjoy and Happy Hunting!

1. Get out ahead of them and away from bases, Send up drone, use rebel spotting to mark them all, tag the 3 drivers with sync shot, or whoever you want but just make sure to tag the driver of the actual supply truck. EMP the supply truck in the middle. Shoot the heli with the HTI which in turn your homies will shoot the ones you tagged and youíre home free. Just pop the rest and get ur supplies. Easy peasy.

But as of right now... Iím not getting ANY supplies from ANY convoys, choppers or planes. NONE. :( wtf Ubi??

I like to put 3-4 satchel charges on the road with even spacing. 1 for each car. 1 click and all the cars explode. If there is a chopper, shoot it with guns or blow it up with drone.
Sure, I only get half but it's quick and easy.

Sometimes I snipe the truck/driver and use grenade launcher on rest. Collateral is high, civilians and the accidental supply truck blowup.

I don't like to hang around for enemy backups/random Unidad patrols.

I know this post is very old, but I just wanted to share my tactic for those who are new to the game & who still need to upgrade weapons. I follow the exact same steps (from 1 to 10) as OP, but I also use the EMP drone to disable the supply truck & immediately order my AI fireteam to attack & they do a pretty good job of taking out the driver & passenger without causing any damage to the truck.

I've farmed enough resources to fully upgrade 14 weapons & I think I'm done with this now!!!
