Took these today at Bluegrass Airport, Lexington, KY. (They'll be there tomorrow too if anybody lives in the area).

I'm not really sure what the dive bomber is, somebody there said SPD or SPB 5 Dauntless (my only previous introduction to WWII planes is IL2 http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif ).

The P-51 (not sure which variation or year) was grounded because of an oil and/or water problem.

Sorry for the large pics. I don't know how to compress them.

The P-51 was converted to take up an extra passenger. I hear that after November this year, it's going to be illegal to ride in any converted WWII craft.

Salute!

The P-51 is an ugly spud, isn't it? Looks like a rainbow trout from the side. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/blink.gif

Nice pics though. There's a Zero replica at Olympia, WA, near where I live. Beautiful. And a Corsair at the Museum of Flight at Boeing Field. I go up there sometimes and lean over the ropes and carress it. Beautiful bird. Dark blue. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/heart.gif

How anyone can look at those pics and declare the Mustang as ugly is beyond me...
She ain't no Spit, but a beauty nonetheless. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

And the Dauntless...another real beauty.

Thanks for posting the pics.

I dunno where you heard the thing about it being illegal to ride in warbirds after November, TugZooey. Sounds like a load of **** to me.

The kind of uproar and backlash any legislative body would face if they did something like that would be very, very vicious. It'd also put huge dents in the legislator's almighty Re-election Chances.

It would come most likely from the FAA, a bunch of unelected federal bureaucrats. I'm not saying I'd believe this rumor, but if true it would be the FAA that has this authority and generally nobody could do a thing to stop them. This does sound like an unsubstaniated rumor to me since if a airframe is airworthy, it's airworthy. If the FAA deemed it unsafe for a passenger, then it should deem it unsafe for the pilot too!! In this case then the aircraft sounds like it should have been deemed nonairworthy in the first place. This makes no sense really.

Mortoma, you are correctamundo. The FAA has sole power on what flies and what doesn't.

I'd say it's another bad rumor. I was at MAAM's WWII Weekend and nothing was said about it by the Yankee Lady crew. If it was the case of no more passengers in a WWII aircraft they surely would have said something about it. I'm also a member at MAAM and the guys there that fly didn't say anything either.

Nice pics. I noticed the '51 still wears "confederate airforce" on the tail. A lot of them are changing to "commemorative airforce" instead. The choice seemed split at the last airshow I went to.

I notice that there are bombs on the racks, and bullets in the MGs. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif Do they work?

Those stripes on the belly DO make the P-51 look a bit fat.

Good fashion advice: if you have a bit of a tummy, don't wear horizontal stripes...

Sorry about any confusion here. What I heard (and I stress heard, but from a very reliable source) was that after November the FAA won't allow people to ride in a one-seated WWII Plane that has been converted to take an extra passenger (by removing the radio and/or other stuff behind the pilot seat). The Dauntless in the pictures would be able to since it has two seats and is made to carry two people.

Again, that's what I was told (one of the pilots even mentioned it).

Oh yeah, I think the Mustang is a great looking plane, especially up close.
