View Full Version : TrackIR rear view?

I've just seen a track recorded by a TrackIR user in a K4 and I noticed he was able to look right back through the armoured glass headrest.

I thought it might be a feature of the K4 but when I tried to do that with the mouse or hat panning I could'nt get past my 5 o'clock, but I thought it replaced an existing mouse function?

Is this a feature of TrackIR?

It is not a feature, but an old devicedriver.

Get a new one (the latest finally saves *all* your current preferences/setting). Maybe its best not to download Beta.

http://games.naturalpoint.com/support/downloads.html

BTW: Lock-On is supported now in Beta .. great !!!! So my TrackIR is ready, but where the h*ck did I put the freaking sim ?!! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

there are two modes in trackir mouse emualtion which gives the same effect as mouse view in FB and an enhanced mode that has accelerated movement and a centring function for shooting

the original enhanced drivers for trackir did allow you to look straight back (in most planes this got you no benefit as it gave a view of the seat back) but nobody uses those drivers anymore as they had a few problems, the current trackir drivers do not allow a straight 6 view

Sorry I don't actually have TrackIR I was just thinking why the hell can't I do that when I pan with the hat?

I can turn 180 easily with head and eye's as I sit here, they did'nt put in a glass head rest for nothing did they?

So your saying TrackIR users can't do this with the latest drivers?

XyZspineZyX
09-19-2003, 01:18 AM
correct - that was an early patch - all the later one's do not have that.

last time i heard, they don't even offer that patch for dload any longer - which is good.

Hate to tell you this, but the brand new TrackIR drivers still let you look straight back. It's in the readme that comes with the drivers. A small change in the registry gets it working.

There was a HUGE amount of whining on this and other forums about it being a cheat.

Apparently the logic was that to see directly behind you have to turn your shoulders about 30 degrees as well as your head and iot was claimed that this was impossible when strapped into a fighter ... so trackir was unrealistic and a cheat.

Personally i agree with you WWII pilots almost certianly did loosen the straps enough to turn in the seat slightly and look directly behind .... but the majority consensus won and the feature was removed.

TrackIR is fine.
Linda Blair is not.

Gotta agree with RBJ about the straight back & up. Here's a question slightly OT... does anyone here consider using the "zoom" (i.e. gunsight view versus normal view) a cheat? Unless pilots routinely carried binoculars, I can't see gunsight view being realistic. If it just moved your virtual head right up close to the gunsight, instead of zooming Everything in, it would be a bit better, doncha think?

The highest zoom level is almost 1:1 with what a real human MkI eyeball would see at the same distance, barring things like monitor size, etc.

So. No.

Gunsight view is certainly not a cheat. It may be unrealistic but it's just a button in the game that came with the CD.

It should not be called gunsight view because you can use it to ID a plane at 9:00 1000m away. It's should be called zoom view.

I have always seen it as unrealistic and tend not to use it .. partly cos if you do you are inclined to run up the rear of the target .. the amount of detail you get at 500 metres in gunsight view seems far too much for "peering" through a gunsight .. at least with my eyes in RL

Well and can do that without even turning my head in real life. I just bend my neck back and arch my spine, and I can see six oclock high no problem.

I think the 180 degree limit for pan view is bull sh!t, it just wasting time and adds nothing to realism.

Track IR can turn lighting fast at any point, I think I like to keep that too.

It is a well known fact that in WWII pilots wore diving helmets and were glued solidly to the pilots seat with industrial strength adhesive thus limiting their field of view to that achievable by a slight head movement and some eye movement.

Maybe C1 modelled the cricked neck into FB. We should have an "Ouch" sound effect when you look back at 5 oclock. Of course the "Ouch" would be at 100 Db and be heard by other pilots hundreds of miles away.

Oh I'm a bit miffed now, I will eventually find the money for TrackIR but I rather hoped you could look straight back.

I think the way the game lmits you like that is so artificial, a few extra degrees would be much more realistic.

If only the final little things could be sorted, like the sound issues with distant engines etc.

I'd galadly sacrifice all the addon aircraft for a few mods to what we have now.

"What I don't understand is if it is just supposed to be emulating the mouse, then how come it can do more than the mouse?"

That is the big question - obviously the functionality exposed by 1C in their dll enabled this type of view but wasn't restricted.

It appears an issue with that dll, not necessarily naturalpoint.

At this point, the restriction needs to come from 1C imo.
