Tell ya what, we'll have a contest. You can be in the ultimate killing machine in the Navy, a hunter-killer submarine. I'll fly an IL2T or He-111H6, your choice. We'll head towards each other at our maximum speeds, closing with terrible ferocity and lethal intent. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif When we are both at optimal, destructive range, we'll both fire our fish. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif Let the best machine win! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif Suck seawater, squiddy! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

you can be right and wrong in the same time, but navy is not only carriers, but Frigates, Destroyers, submarines, corvettes and patrol vessels, mines warfare, tugboats etc etc...carriers are 2/10 of navy.

If you are a Brit, you might know what is an Exocet......one of their carriers ate one of those....now it lies at the bottom of the ocean between Argentina and the Islas malvinas (falklands)

one plane can make the difference.( and the pilot will be back for lunch)

Years ago, I played a simulator called "Aces of the Deep", always on full realisim. It was often quite a challenge trying to stalk your way into a well protected convoy with a Type VII U-Boat, kill a merchant and then trying to get away alive. A different sort of combat, it took lots of patience, cunning, skill and timing to get in and out of ambush situations. Was always especially hard when an escort carrier was in the convoy. Now know why German submariners lost 80% of their numbers. Would love to see someone do a naval sim on the dreadnaught and pre-dreadnaught era. For that matter, would love to see one on Triremes or galleys of ancient or medieval times.

A destroyer(or frigate maybe) and a merchant ship were sunk by Exocets fired from Dassault Super Etendard attack aircraft. The sinkings only proved 2 things: #1 Harriers are crappy interceptors and #2 Aluminum hulled warships are a bad idea. The 165kg warhead of the Exocet can't kill anything but escort ships anyway.

A single hit from a cruise missile( except maybe an AGM-130) will not sink a "real" carrier or any other large surface combatant for that matter. Very few navies have any large surface combatants left anyway. For this reason most modern antiship missiles have small warheads. The most notable exception being the Israeli designed AGM-142 Have Nap which mounts a 750lb warhead. Then again a B-52 can carry 2 Have Naps and 8 Harpoons pretty much guarnteed to sink anything afloat except maybe an Iowa class battleship.

The Naval vessel lost to Exocet attack was the HMS Sheffield, a destroyer.

The Royal Navy lost no capitol ships in the Falklands Campaign.
