I was watching some old gun cam movies last night.
One of these movies was a aircraft shooting up a BF something or other and as the bullets were going through its left wing, the left undercarriage began to lower (Only the left one however) It didnt just fall out, it started to lower as if it was coming into land...
This would be a really cool little touch to the damage when shooting other aircraft (Not to make it happen all the time but once in a while it would be a really neat effect)

Just an idea http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Oh yeah, one more, I dont know if this is already in the game but shooting the external fuel tanks on Mustangs and things (if they are still there) and not nessecaruly exploding straight away but watching the aircraft be eaten up in a ball of flame would be pretty cool aswell...

Ill try and find some links to show you what I mean...

The gear already drops on some US planes if you hit the hydraulic system, and sometimes they get stuckup in there. The droptanks on US planes (and maybe german planes) also supposedly catch fire. But IIRC, in real life, most were made of paper, so that should they get hit and catch fire, it was just a quick flame, instead of a large explosion or slow burn when went up the fuel line to the main tanks.

Some drop tanks were pressed paper, others were aluminum. Paper's cheaper http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

EDIT~ oops I thought you said "paper ONES", not PLANES, lol

Yes, indeedy http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Walter J. Konantz relates:

[he was a P-51 pilot with the 338th at Wormingford]

"On arrival at my [aircraft's] parking area, my crew chief takes my parachute and places it in the cockpit. I ask him if the fuel tanks, including the two pressed-paper 110 gallon external tanks, are topped off. He assures me they are full"

They are the ones that look like sausages, with crimped ends (that's were the paper is folded), whereas the aluminum ones look like the ones you see in FB- teardrop shaped.

He may of been dropping his gear on purpose, as a show of surrender too, and not a mechanical failure on that side, but the side not dropping.

The 108 (110) gal tank was also made in steel though it, the steel one, was rarer. Painted grey, usually, and ends don't have that angled seam look of the paper ones as well as other minor differences. Teardrop tank (not laminar shaped one) was also available in larger size: 150 gal I believe - guess. Not enough books devoted to tanks (gas).

I have several sources which refer to US and RAF pilots shooting at BF-109's and seeing their landing gear flop out when the hydraulics ruptured.

This would be VERY cool if it could be added in BOB or even in PF.

On a similar topic, many Ju-87's were retrofitted with explosive bolts so that pilots could jettison their trousered landing gear if it was damaged and they were forced to make an emergency landing.

Yep. Also in many combat reports of FAF pilots there were mentions of gear dropping out from damaged planes (IIRC Yaks and La-5s).

The damage model of the aircrafts is probably the last thing I would love to see improved in this combat sim. It's perfect!

Maybe some ironing of a bug or two but otherwise no complains in this department.

Might have been original IL-2 where I paused game to admire huge hole in target 109E wing. First reason for pausing was due this 109 dropping gear after few shots. N i c e touch.

Yeah I have also seen the landing gear "falling" out of the wings but what I mean is, slowly being lowered....Are there any reports of this happening in AEP or FB??
