The Vb LF performs better at low alt and the Vb performs better up high.

The LF has an engine and supercharger configured for low altitude fighting, it produces most power below 10000ft where as the Vb has a regular 2 stage 2 speed supercharer for high alt performance.

Around v. late 42 and throughout 43 most surviving Spit V's were converted to LF. V's by installing a Merlin 45, 50 or 55 with supercharger settings optimised for max power below about 6000 ft. Most had clipped wings and a lot were retrofitted with the "C" wing with 4 hispanios and provision for 500lb of bombs.

The basic V maxed out at about 370-380 at 13,000 and the LF.V was at top speed of 355-365 at about 6000ft.

The LF.V had a blistering max climb of about 1450m/min: only equalled or bettered by thandful of fighters: yak-3 & 9, 109K, F4U-4
