Im a noobie (to IL2, not to sims, anybody remember Aces Over the Pacific?)exploring online play on hyperlobbie. I have seen the VWF, VEF etc. and looks like they have cool missions but it appears you have to be a member or something? Can anyone explain this to me? Also the terms OKL and VVS are a little fuzzy as to what they actually stand for. Sorry for rookie questions, but I'd like to get involved and need some info here.

You have to register and "join" a squad, not really - just in VEF/VWF.

Difficulty settings are always all on and "no speedbar" unchecked - check if those settings fit you.

Looking forward for you to join, never too much VEF/VWF players at a time on HL.

And if you`re able to host, think about it - lack of hosts is the main weakness of those wars.

So if I have to join a squad just to fly on the server, do I have to fly with my squad?

VEF= Virtual Eastern Front - an eastern front war

VWF= Virtual Western Front - a western front war (1944+)

VVS = Soviet Air Force (or RED side)

OKL = Luftwaffe (or BLUE side)

To fly in either of these wars, you have to register at the respecitve sites. It is free, and there is no requirement other than you are a part of a squad. But if you are not part of a squad, then you just make up a name, and register your own one man squad. Easy.

To join a mission, simply put yourself into one of the slots when they start to fill up, then the host will alunch, and then you fly till you die!!!

Stats are recorded at the war sites for your viewing pleasure, yadda yadda yadda.

whit ye looking at, ya big jessie?!?!

All the above is true and no, you don't have to fly with your other squad mates. There is an FAQ on the VEF2 site that tells you how both VEF2 and VWF work. They are both made by the same people and played by the same players for the most part. So they are of course very similer in operation. The VEF2 main page that has the FAQ on it is http://www.vef2.net/site/main.htm

VWF is at http://western.virtual-front.no/

I suggest not only reading the basic FAQ and rules, but the tactical section as well. I host VEF and VWF missions and the one thing that consistantly holds up a mission longest is that no one knows how to make the opposite side request. Just so you arn't lost at this point, a member of both teams must create their side of a mission. What they do is select a mission type, select a target area and select the number of planes for the attack, escort and patrol. Once both sides have made their requests, the generator combines them into a single mission. Until both requests are in, the mission cannot be flown. So learning how to do mission requests will often reduce the waiting time and also has an added bonus, YOU get to pick the mission type and target.

Wait, Death ...I can't find any spelling mistakes...but you made me look http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I tried both VEF and several other virtual wars and found it wasn't my cup of tea. Too much focus on kills (points) and not enough on accomplishing the mission. You are at a distinct disadvantage if you aren't flying with a squad on voice coms because many of the other guys (including your opponents) are.

So, I went back to Coops where the mission, and not the score, is the thing. No one keeps track of the scores (or should). Actually, some of the computer generated campaigns that are flown as Coops are quite good. I'm not saying Coops are better for everyone, just a better fit for me.

But, for sure, give the virtual wars a try. There are some very good pilots flying them. You may find a squad to your liking.

The problem with both virtual wars and Coops is the long wait in the lobby waiting for enough players to join.

I suggest watching sports on TV. I've also been known to wash the dishes, do my laundry, wax the car. I once painted my entire house waiting for a game to fill up http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Give 'em all a try.

Just stay out of those DF arenas. Arcaders Only!

Well, ttiger, you should check out Bellum War (http://www.bellum-dow.com.ar/).

It's very mission based, and if you, even as an individual pilot, don't put some effort into a viable strategy, like us Germans didn't on the Smolensk map, you're very quickly looking at a Soviet juggernaut; and then a new map. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

OKL actually stands for Oberkommando der Luftwaffe, which was the German Airforce High Command

An all-too-common and embarassingly incorrect term used by a majority of this community, some of whom should know better.

What the hell is wrong with plain old, correct "LW" to describe the Luftwaffe???

Cause LW is just too simple for us uber pilots
