A man was crushed to death Tuesday when he dived under a slow-moving semi-trailer to retrieve his baseball cap.

High winds had blown the hat off the man's head as he got out of his white convertible in the parking lot of a farm supply store. The wind carried the well-worn hat underneath a loaded semi-trailer just as it started to move.

"The truck was rolling forward and he dove under to grab the hat. He tried to grab it and wiggle out quickly,'' said witness Josh Emard.

Emard said he wondered at first if what he was seeing might be a stunt.

"It was just unbelievable that someone would go under a moving semi for a hat.''

Derek Keenan, 44, of Lethbridge died at the scene after the truck's rear wheels rolled over his upper body. The truck came to a stop with Keenan underneath the flatbed trailer loaded with precast concrete drainage pipe.

The 40-year-old truck driver, looking visibly shaken, was helped into an ambulance and taken to hospital.

Lethbridge police Sgt. Tom Ascroft said no charges will be laid.

"A very odd set of circumstances led to a very tragic accident,'' he said.

Took out the direct pictures in case someone isn't paying attention and clicking on threads...

And for the record, I'm calling BS on those pictures. We'll see if it hits snopes in the next few days http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I dont know about photoshopped, possibly staged though. Something looks a bit off but... I dont know, maybe there should be some combo of fluids squeezed from his mouth, nose, etc.
Definite Darwin Award nominee if real though.

My issue is the crushed coke can sitting on his body. First, if he had a coke on his body as an 18-wheeler, it would have sunken into his body, not crushed on top of his body.

Second, it just seems like a trite addition: a yes, that 18-wheeler sure was heavy, it can even crush coke cans!!!11 kind of thing.

Good points. Also, I've never run over a human in an 18 wheeler, but I have run over a rabbit or two and they tend to pop open.

This got to be fake, the first pic with the wheels on him his mouth is closed and looks like he is sleeping on the last pic his head is back and mouth open. The "report" says that he dove under the truck......ok, why is he face up?

I actually saw the photos first about 3 weeks ago, they were emailed to my friend from another friend who was from New York. Not too sure if they are real or not...

Absolute BS. So many things wrong and inconsistant with the pictures. First is that the second wheel has already past his body. With his body in that possition, that means that one of the two wheels, depending on which direction the truck was moving, would have rolled over his legs and crushed them too. Second, the man allegedly dove to get his hat, yet he is face up in the picture. Third, a coke can and dollar bill were left on his body when the truck was removed; however, if he were holding these items as he dove under the truck, then his hands would have remained attached to, or located near, them and also been crushed. Fourth, a truck that size, carrying that cargo, would have poped him like a grape; especially after being left ontop of him until police arrived on the scene and outlined his body.

First, the story I heard regarding these photos when I first saw them, was that he was a gang member, part of a group that tried to hijack the truck, but he fell off and got ran over.

Second, outlining the body is a myth, they don't actually do that in most cities, it's considered contaminating the crime scene.

Those are two different articles, according to what I see.

The darwin award says he dove to get his hat.

The message board with the pictures say it was a hijacker.

My vote is also that this is falsified. The pictures of the body simply don't seem the show the type of trauma that would ordinarily (as though this happens all of the time!) be caused by being crushed by a tractor-trailer. It's far too neat for even an empty trailer, much less one with a heavy load.

Not to mention the fact that the blood is different in each of the three pictures, his legs appear to be unharmed, and what's with that hand near his belt in the third shot?

"A person should not choose the form in which he wishes to perform the service of the Lord, but he should perform it in any manner the opportunity affords. He should be like a vessel into which anything may be poured - wine, milk, or water."
