View Full Version : Some ideas for improving online missions

1) When a battle is won a text message says who won; "Red wins! In your face Blue!" or "Blue wins! Muahahah!" or something like that.. it would be the choice of the server admin. And then keep score on the number of wins for each team, both map wins and planes shot down and so on... This would make, at least me, want to win the map more. Now it seems that most just want to make as many aerial kills as possible.

2) The ability to limit the number of how many planes of a certain model is in the air at the same time. For example in a map with 32 players you would be able to limit the fighters and bombers for each team to 8 fighters and 8 bombers. I've been on servers with clear bombing objectives where almost everyone flies a fighter http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif. I say; make it easier and more important to go for the objective rather than just shooting down enemy planes.

3) Dynamic objectives. Let's say that the briefing says your teams objective is to bomb a town controlled by the enemy before your ground troops can attack. Ok, you manage to deliver a good amount of bombs to the target.. we made it =).... well not yet, suddenly a message comes up, bombers needed at grid D5 enemy armor moving in on the town, destroy as many as you can. Fighters; protect the bombers at all cost!... now you have to go back and realod or go for the target if you've not already released you deadly cargo. The other side would of course get some message as to defend their armor when they advance. This is just rough ideas, wich clearly needs some polishing.

as far as I remember if you make moveing objects(like tanks, cars) online they'll be warping all over the place..dunno if it was fixed with AEP...

Good ideas actually but I think we are limited by the game engine and many things are not possible.

The 'in your face' and 'muhahaha' are certainly up to the server admins who can customize FBD, but I sometimes wonder if anyone reads those statements anyway. You are right, even with painstakingly created missions oriented around bombing objectives, 80-90% of players will fly fighters, will be completely oblivious of the ground attack situation and will only end up over the target area if it lies directly between the two closest bases http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Part of that is a cultural thing, many people simply do not know or do not understand the nature of a scripted server and how it differs from a regular DF server. That can be changed however, I've known quite a few high noon Yak drivers who now fly ground attack often because of the fun and challenge...they had previously just never known what it was all about, but after flying in a scripted server they got the hang of it.

It is possible then to teach an old dog new tricks and to show a completely different side of the game. As more scripted servers eventually appear, I think this will become the norm instead of the unedited, stock planes and icon DF servers we see now.

I think the core of what you are suggesting is entirely possible in the coop arena, therefore it would make sense to me to approach the game as a giant coop where you had the ability to respawn, rather than a simple player vs player DF server that we have now.

I've never really been sure why in a coop a player is unable to respawn, but if that could be changed, the entire nature of the way we play this game could be changed as well. I would love to see something like this happen.

Good ideas and good suggestions...I think we are only limited by the game itself really and if those parts of the game are not changed things will continue on as they are now. If they do get changed somehow, the online playability of the game will be incredibly more versatile and will add to the longevity of the game.

S!

I guess we'll have to hope for some new stuff for Pacific Fighters, and a bunch of new functions for the FMB http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Well I am still looking into the scripted server stuff but hoping you can making it so only destroying ground targets counts using FBDaemon. Set the plane and pilot counts to zero.

So you can kill all the aircraft you want but the mission won't move and be won until ground targets are destroyed. So maybe folks will start escorting bombers and bombers get a chance to destroy ground targets.

Tailspin, using fbdaemon you can set those conditions as criteria for victory. I only have one map where I actually use anything other than pilot or plane kills to establish victory and it is the map with the two battleships, that if sunk causes an immediate victory for Blue.

I may do more of these type.
