It looks like there will be a little competition for Pacific Fighters (and competition is good!). The developer is IR Gurus. The preview makes it sound like halfway between Crimson Skies and IL2 (it will have console versions).

"but hardcore grognards still won't mistake this game for something on the level of IL-2 Sturmovik."

I think that about sums it up my Fellow Grognards http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Probably, the FM's of this sim will be "arcadish", but to say the truth I'm rather impressed by the athmospheric effects and the flames! I notice also that the muzzleflashes are not so big http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I see no cockpit views (maybe not done yet)but that turns me off.Arcadish or not but I want a cockpit.

http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gifThe Hero's of the Pacific looks allright... but just try the Gulf of Finland Map with UberDemon and use P-38 or P-40 againest the Zero fighters with some IL-4's or SB_2m-103's for Japanese Bombers.
I can usally get up to 30 or 40 enemy aircraft before the frame rate starts getting low on my computer. And that is a lot of aircraft to be shooting at or being shot at from.
Bottom line for me... I guess is that I'll stick with IL-2. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Apparently "grognard" is a wargamer, "wargames" meaning the old hex-map board games. Grognard is supposed to mean a grumbling french soldier:

I am offended that Gamespot lumps us together with those freaks http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Hmmm indeed your Right:

Grognard: a soldier of Napoleons' Old Guard; a veteran soldier; grumbler (French) - Oxford English Dictionary, 2nd ed

Grognard: (slang) an experienced wargamer - John Young, Strategy & Tactics magazine

Hey Harrier, don't see ya around too much anymore!

Well, anyway, I don't think PF will have too much of a problem beating it in market sales.

Heroes of Pacific ... HOP http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Now I don't feel so silly playing "aces expansion pack" or "pacific fighters"

Gotta admit, "forgotten battles" is the coolest name ever for a game.

What I want to know is how the association between a grumbling French soldier and a hardcore wargamer was made. Seems like a leap to me. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

The graphics model reminds me of some older simms I've seen - not particularly good.

I'm definitely down with being a grognard though.

I got as far as "set in the Pacific theater of WWII between the United States and imperial Japan."

Well there's a surprise. Nobody else involved in that theatre then.
Pacific Fighters wins hands down.
Cheers!

The review is talking about the difference between the P-38 and the wildcat. The guys says the huge power and superior maneuverability made the P-38 easier to kill with.

Now, I know the P-38 was a good turner for a twin, but could it really out-furball a wildcat?

Its for the consoles...that says it all. If its a good game, it's a good game, but its not in the same league as Pacific Fighters. At the moment, nobody else is...which is kind of sad in one way but very exciting for us anyways because we are getting a highly detailed sim.

Being a wargamer myself aswell as flying in IL2 I dont like being called a freak.

People are not freaks, they went out with victorian freak shows.

I would even go so far rto say that I could be termed a grognard.

Kozhedub: In combat potential, the Yak-3, La-7 and La-9 fighters were indisputably superior to the Bf-109s and Fw-190s. But, as they say, no matter how good the violin may be, much depends on the violinist. I always felt respect for an enemy pilot whose plane I failed to down.

Don't complain too loudly about titles like this.. its PS2 consoles like this that can deevelop new flight SIM fans.. Getting young kids into WWII Sims is difficult now becuase they are not nearly as involved in the "Historical" aspect of the topic as I was..

More fans means some will end up evolving to hard core sims and thats a good thing..

I played it a bit. Not bad. Very arcade and much like a Pacific version of "Secret Weapons over Normady". I think it its released for Gamecube I would buy it for fun. But its not a sim.

This quote should also describe the level of this "sim"

We tried out the Wildcat and Lightning on the E3 floor and noticed quite a difference; the latter's powerful twin engines and superior maneuverability made combat a lot easier.

Lol. The thought of a Lightning being more manuverable then a Wildcat just makes me laugh. Im a big Lightning fan, but jeez.
