I doubt there is a dam on any of the maps, but you could create one with some of the new objects available. Try using one of the fortress walls and dress it up with other appropriate objects. S!

One of my fellow fubar members created a dam using the objects in FMB. He used the castle-like walls to stretch across the water, creating a dam. He made a mission which focuses on destroying the dam, which is very fun and very hard.

If you would like the mission, please email me at jrebitzk@umich.edu and I will forward it to you.

I've been working on this for a bit too. There is certainly dam-like scenery around e.g. large lakes with feeder and overflow streams coming off them. I had a go at making a damn wall which is possible with the stuff available and it looks real enough too. The problem is that the walls sit on top of the water. If you use a torpedo the charge goes under the wall. I haven't tried bombs yet because it would take the fun out of it. Below is a picture of what I was working on.

Very nice "realistic" dam. I had a thought as I was reading your note about the torps.....I know you said they go under the walls, what if you put train cars down, The fuel type. I wonder if you would see an explosion?

Dark Hunter...

I used stationary boats, because the part of the object is below the water line, and placed them under the wall. The torpedos can take out the ship but not the wall objects. I know people have asked about destroying buildings before and the method involved the same principle as I have done here. The problem here is trying to hit a surface target with an under water bomb. I think the only option may be to drop standard bombs and get out of there as fast as possible.

Gang,

I just finished a mission building a Dam very much like the one pictured in these posts. However, a slight twist..

I also used a bridge (wooden) sandwiched by the walls and towers. I used "Fuel Rail Cars" as my ignitor. The result, torps hit them with no probs, and the blast is enough that it takes out the walls, tower, and bridge. Totally magnificant!!

I set the mission at 19:50 hours..late dusk, through in some AA and spot lights...made for a very good mission. I'll post the mission on my site by tomorrow.

Just one thing though...the dam, it took 1.5 hours to construct...lol.

I also threw in some power stations down stream...hehe

Posting a pic is relatively easy if you have server space somewhere, I use Atomic Album.

I've tried the railcar thing (object 152) and it doesn't work, maybe I'm doing something wrong I dunno.

Here's a mission for the He-111 I worked out. You have to bomb the railway station - simple enough right? you can fly one of the other aircraft if you like providing you check the player box in FMB.

just a little historical note. the allies had great dreams of destroying german dams in WWII, thus destroying the industrial capacity of germany. ironically, they encountered problems destroying the dams too, just as we are. they ended up with a giant 10,000lb bomb dropped at very low altitude (about 100m i think) that would bounce/skip across the water until it hit the dam, sink a few feet and explode. the unit was based in england with a mix of british and american pilots and called the 'Dambusters'. they suffered horrible casualties due to the vulnerability at such low altitude, and the bombs exploding before the plane got safely away. the unit was dissolved due to being too dangerous, but the effects of their deeds helped in slowing german industry.---i saw it on the 'history channel' in the US. if you get a chance, watch 'Dambusters' , very interesting!

Gang,

Well I have to many pictures to put here to show the dam mission. So I built a quick web site to display the pic's.

The map I used is Kuban. The large lake in the upper right hand corner. Hope this helps explain how I was able to make it work.

In response to ehofish's note about the problems the allies had in destroying the dams:

1. The unit was not disbanded. After the dambusters raid 617 squadron took part in the sinking of the Tirpitz, the destruction of the V-3 weapon before it went operational, and became VERY accurate with the Tallboy(6 ton)s and Grand Slam(10 tons) earthquake bombs. It is currently equipped with the Tornado IDS.
2. The height they needed to drop the bomb was 60ft (less than 19m)
3. The personnell for the squadron were from many countries, England, Australia, USA, Canada, New Zealand, and the were hand-picked by Wing Commander Gibson, the squadrons leader. During the rest of the war the squadron became home to a lot of aircrews who, for whatever reason, didn't wish to be taken of operations. They were, as such, a highly expierienced squadron, used for small pinpoint raids, and were reffered to as a 'sniper squadron'

I'm sorry if this sounded a little pedantic, but i've been guilty of hero-worship of this squadron for more than a decade now, so i felt the need to do this.

If anyone is interested in this subject, i'd strongly recommend reading:
'Enemy Coast Ahead' by Guy Gibson, which details not only the dambusters raid, but the events that lead to his leading the raid.
'The Dambusters" by Paul Brickhill, this details the struggle te scientist had in developing the bomb used against the dams, and carries on detailing the missions of 617 squadron, up until the end of the war.

thanks for lettin me have my rant /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

taxloss, thanks for straightening me out. its been a while since i saw the TV program, and you obviously know much more about the subject than they could put in a 1 hour show (the first half of the show was about the scientist you mentioned). fascinating stuff!

I've made three dams since I read this last night. I wish I could post pics of them but I haven't a place to upload them to. Man making dams is a lot of fun.

Yeah. They were lancaster bobmers. You could use a Pe8 with a 5000lb bomb. They flew at 60ft! (height of my house), at only 135knots. The bomb was shaped like a large dustbin, dropped sideways so it would spin, and bounce. One fact I have found is that if you set a P-40 or somthing with a bomb, set a time of 15 seconds, and drop it low over water, it bounces for a few seconds, before going off. Bomb was let go at 250feet from the dam wall.
Sorry if this is a little (or very) boaring!
