I would imagine it would...

Imagine a 170 to 200 pound bag of bones hitting your wing at 300 to 400 miles per hour...which is basically what is happening.

If 40 mph is enough to catapult you through a car windshield, maybe 300 to 400 miles per hour would be enough to shear off a wing.

Just my guess...

If you cant hit a man under canopy, how were you able to shoot his AC down in the first place?

Have you ever seen what a 9 pound bird can do to a 747?

Thanks Amanda, great response.

Also, a spell checker would help some flight simmers, maybe.

sure it would rip off a wing 160-220lb pilot?

Look what a 5lb bird does to an aircraft

Now if the germans only invented a hawk launching cannon to replace the 108 and 103 cannon maybe germany would have won the war

It's not a matter of where he GRIPS it, it's a simple weight ratio!

I've read stories of low-flying Ju-87s and P-38s hitting telephone poles and actually returning to base with sections of the pole still lodged in the wing. Of course these planes(and other warbirds) sported armor and many had all metal contruction. Many planes nowadays have largely fiberglass construction(or at least fiberglass skins). Modern planes just aren't built to withstand the rigors of war.

Personally, I think the reason hitting parachuting pilots rips off wings is just the result of simplistic collision programming. I don't think the FB engine recognizes mass or inertia, it simply recognizes that you've hit something and responds accordingly.

And on the other hand, a man I knew distantly who owned a P-51 was killed when he clipped a telephone line in that P-51 while trying to land after a power failure.

There is the infamous chicken gun used for testing. They fire a fryer out a cannon at winscreens for testing strengths.

175lbs would have thousads of pounds of pressure @ air speed.

Shoot the chicken gun at it LOL.
