Hi all, I'm new here, planning to enter the Sturmovik world... so I'd like to buy the game.

But I have a question before doing this, and I hope that grognards of flight simulations won't kill me for this: will I be able to fly with a mouse and the keyboard, and do it well?

That's because the recent flight sims I tried wher lot disappointing this way, even if older ones were playable by mouse... which is not wrong: why should developers worry about this as planes are controlled with a cloche?

Well, just asking.

Thanks.

well is is not advisable to fly il-2 without a joystick. The dynamics of this game are so good that it will be very difficult to fly without, let alone fight in it.

So get a joystick AND il 2 http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I hope I don't disappoint you but not only will you find it very difficult (though not impossible) to fly this sim with a mouse, but the learning curve for this sim is pretty steep even with a stick. My advice would be to purchase a stick. I also use rudder pedals as I've never liked the "twisty" sticks for rudder control. CH products are good and they sell both sticks and pedals. But I will say that this sim is worth the investment in controlers and the time needed to become proficient. It is simply the best WWII combat flight sim on the market. Period.

As an alternative, get a cheapo stick for $15-20 dollars, just to give it a whirl. It may take some getting used to, and keep in mind that an expensive stick is much, much easier to fall in love with. As a result, the cheap stick may not work as well as what you'd like, but I guarantee (and when I say guarantee, I mean GUARANTEE) that you'll like it better than the mouse.

It can be done but joystick is sooooo much better. I was bored on a flight across the Atlantic once, so I pulled out my laptop and fired up FB. A nice P-51/FW190 dogfight at 10,000m altitude, almost the altitude I was at in RL http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif. Anyway I was flying with keyboard only, and it didn't work that great, but it was playable.

heh, the person in the seat beside me looked over at my screen and saw a P-51 going down in flames... by her expression I'd say she's not a fan of flying http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

If you can, get a stick for sure though, its infinitely better.

Aircraft are controlled with either a control column with a yoke or a joystick. A cloche is a plastic or glass cover for propagating vegetables! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

I wouldn't join any club that would have ME as member!
