Two suggestions (either would work) ...

1) Add in a teeter at the end. If they throw them into or hit tgem into a hazard, have the defender try to avoid it. Then, the offensive player needs to land a hit or grab to finish it. It would add depth and make it feel more like a finish.

2) Add a mechanic that slips the hazard unless they are low on life or stamina.

Usually when people suggest a fix they first distinguish a problem. You haven't mentioned a problem. Also, the hazard death is fine.

There is already a teeter, it's the guard break counter.
