With the, admittedly surprising success, of my P-40 thread I thought I'd ask about what is probably my favorite Russian fighter of the war (P-40 is my favorite fighter of World War II period to say nothing of my favorite U.S. fighter...which of course it is as well), the MiG-3.

The MiG-3 is certainly not perfect, and aside from the AM-38 powered variant it has trouble in air-to-air combat at altitudes below 6000 meters.

Seeing as I prefer combat at low altitude (i.e. one reason I LOVE the P-40....it is VERY good at low-altitude air combat), the MiG wouldn't seem to be my plane, but I, for one reason or another, really enjoy flying it. It's pretty fast, and I like the array of stores options available, from gun pods, to rockets, to bombs. The fixed internal armament is a bit weak, but that doesn't really bother me, as I can always shred a few Luftwaffe planes before its over and done. Adding the gun pods (which aren't nearly as draggy as the pods you can add on to the Fw-190 and Bf-109) seems to help as well.

So are there any MiG flyers around here?

Personally I prefer the MiG-3ud (or would the correct way be MiG-3UD?).

Although I've moved on and frquently fly other aircraft after FB then AEP came out, I still have a soft spot for the ol' MiG-3. Looking at it, it just screams speed even when parked. I don't know if it had a racing background like the Spitfire but it just looks like it had. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

If only it wasn't a fragile old bird. Attacking bombers was always a frightening prospect for me. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

MiG-3 is my personal favorite too.

It looks so beautiful and it flies like an arrow [(c) Pokryshkin].

I like the MiG-3 and have good success flying it at low levels.

I like fitting a MiG-3ud with the 12.7mm gunpods and BnZing some 109s. There's something awesome about how those five streams of green tracers rip planes to pieces.

Shame about it's tendency to spontaneously combust, though. I feel sorry for the guys who really had to fly these fast, sleek molotov cocktails.

Glad to see some MiG fans around.

I too enjoy knocking down Axis planes (particuarly the Bf-109) with the guns of the MiG-3. The gun pods don't affect performance like the ones on the Bf-109 and Fw-190 do so I fit them quite frequently for air-to-air combat.

I prefer the RS-82 loadout for air-to-ground attacks.

And yes I agree, the MiG does look like it has a racing background. I don't believe it does, but someone could make quite a case that it does....lol.

With that Looonnggg nose, the rear set cockpit, and the overall sleek appearance it looks like a speedy plane, which of course it is.

I'm slowly getting used to fighting at higher altitudes thanks to the MiG. I enjoy making -109's fight on my terms.

(Of course in the P-40 I drag them down low, and make them still fight on my terms. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif )

Count me in as well...and it's not like some "charity case"/underdog appeal; I do well in it. After the usual novice flight sim tendency of being a turn junkie wears off, I've found that I like speed/roll more than absolute turn rate....and the case applies to plenty of A/C comparisons. Hitting power ( std armament ) of the MiG made me a better gunner in all planes. If you can do well in a Mig 3, you'll be a one-burst stud in anything else.

Oh, I almost forgot: Love the sleek lines. I actually prefer the looks of the earlier models to the 3U....those cowling scoops give a purposeful "tough" look ( like hoods of late 60's-early 70's musclecars )

I agree about the remark regarding being good with the MiG-3's weaponry.

If you can knock it down in a MiG-3 you've got a good chance to knocking stuff down in other planes as well.

Admittedly while the caliber of the guns on the MiG-3 isn't anything to write home about I find that the cone of fire from the nose guns is really quite devastating if you get close in.

I was fighting a Bf-109 and I'd already hit him many times. Well I cut across his turn and come over the top. I had close to a 90 degree aspect on him. I mean I was looking at a plan form view. I fired a short burst (my 12.7-mm BS either had just run out or ran out as soon as I fired the burst), but as I watched the bullets make impact just ahead of the windscreen the aircraft suddenly caught fire in a brilliant flash.

Needless to say that -109 was a smoking hole shortly after.

I fly the MiG3 and do ok with it as long as I fly it smartly. I like the AM38's speed and slightly better handling (IMO), but the ShvaK equipped model is more decisive when it counts (when offered quick deflection shots in a turning scissors)

As long as you start the fight with good "E" then you can virtually dictate the terms of engagement...which is #1 in my book of FB survival. (and of, course, if you're flying in a historically accurate plane set)
