Autopilot on I-16 is really funny(campaign)... on numerous missions en route to home I crashed into land without obvious reason (my AI comrades also http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif were practicing the same tactic). This happens to I-16 more usual than any other plane I flew(in campaign mode). I think it's a bug. And not to mention that it is very very irritating.

yeah i found something like that with the iL-2 (cant remember which version) in campaign mode. I was doing a mission attacking a harbor and i had it in autopilot about 40km from the obj.

Not too far from my friendly airfield and the AIs were getting pissy on the comms. Saying stuff like 'What are you doing and stuff'. Shouting at someone.

And then the AIs my plane was in formation with decided to dive into the ground sending me with them.

When you fly in the IL-2 and you hear the guy yell "what are you doing?!" he says that when you suddenly yerk the plane up or down. Sitting in the rear facing backwards probably makes his tummy all queasy....lol.

Yes. i`ve been flying the I16 in a new campaign over Lvov and Smolensk and indeed there is a problem with AI I16s smashing into the ground.

It seems to happen when they are on a bombing mission. They fly VERY low over the undulating ground and very often don`t pull up in time. In cases like this I have to fly the entire mission alone since in one flight the entire 4 squad hit the ground!

Oh, and I do not let my plane fly on auto, otherwise it will crash too.

I`m thinking of making a record of it and posting to Oleg.

AI (including autopilot) are notoriously bad at terrain avoidance. How bad depends on flight model and hence aircraft being flown. If you're flight leader, you can save a lot of losses on your side by manually leading the flight over terrain obstacles rather than letting the a/pilot handle it.

This has happened to me as well. About 15 minutes into a campaign mission, I'm following a flight of AI pilots and they do what looks like a hi yo-yo. After a few of these, they do it again and 2 AI IL-2s hit the deck, and go boom!

It's also quite common after the mission objective is accomplished and your flight is heading home. It's actually kind of funny after the bombing run. Not so funny before you even reach the target area.

I'm almost certain that this thing happens to I-16 the most. But for sure is not limited to this bird alone. I end up in dirt numerous times with Finnish Hurri Mk.I autopilot also. I finished whole 1941 year (Ru fighter-37missions) with LaGGS4 - yet never crash into land on autopilot (I engage it often after completing mission goals and when heading to home airfield). With I-16 this happens a lot especially en route to home.

OldPepper mentioned Yo-Yo, AI on I-16 do this a lot and end up crashing (cause may be also laying in fact that I-16 fly on dangerously low altitude). And yes, never BEFORE reaching the target (or at least to me it never happened). I can't wait to get a higher rank so this wouldn't occure any more http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

What really got my goat awhile back is after a particularly good mission (I shot down 5 enemy planes AND got some ground targets) I turned autopilot on and hit 8x time compress to fly home. Stinkin thing flew me right into the ground before I could switch time compress off and jump back at the controls.

Was never able to fly that mission as successful again. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/cry.gif
