View Full Version : Finnish winter war add on for mediocre plane lovers

How about an add on campaign for the Finnish Winter War of 1940? We could have the Fokker D XXl and some other mediocre planes to play with. Maybe even a real role for the TB 3, although I don't know if they were used then. Any thoughts?

Jolly good idea http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Well, soon we'll have the CR.42 and the J8 (Gladiator).

The Glad was used by both, Sweden and Finland against the Russians, and the CR.42 was part of the Swedish inventory. So there you go. Two planes that belong 100% to FB's 'Winter War' theatre.

On top of that some more 'crap planes' would be most welcome, like the good old I-15 and I-15bis (or I-152). One of them being made by some (unfortunatelly unknown to us) modeller in Russia.

Not only that, from what i read some swedish Cr42s was intended for Finland, but i think Finland didnt want them cos of the troubles they had with the G.50 or something...A finnish winter war scenario would be most welcome. And i certainly look forward to the "biplane clash of the giants" Gladiator vs Cr42 http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

And for "crap plane" buffs i recommend to check out the Fiat Cr32 on netwings forums. It looks insanely good http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Its good to see ppl like the early planes too, sometimes it just gets a bit too much with the "all-in-wonder-wiz-45-planes" Hey, when did this happen? the old smileys are back???? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

I remember somebody was doing a Finnish Winter War campaign about a year or less ago, he posted here about it, but haven't seen anything about it since.
Would be great to hear something, since I think many people would be very happy to have it http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Not that related to the Winter War, but it's such a nice plane anyway. A perfect veteran of the Spanish Civil War. Possibly one of the best "Crap planes" wars we could get.

A Winter War add-on (provided there is a flyable Fokker XXI) would be outstanding as a prequel to the Continuation War campaign! Also it would be great to have a campaign option for Continuation War whereby your flyable aircraft would depend on the squadron you choose (e.g.LeLv24=Brewster, LeLv26=Fiat, LeLev28=Morane-Saulnier, LeLev32=Curtis Hawk). The latter two aircraft would also work in the France 1940 Campaign! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif You may say, I'm a dreamer...

That would be all this game is about "The forgotten battle". I have not yet understand why we have the P51, Jap planes, will get Gotha, P80 and other machins that all have their place in WWII history (NOT P80) but not in this game, while we are missing a lot af the kites you are mentioning.

I would love to go into a "winter war" campaign! But I would be dependent on that someone who know what to do would make it. I am forever in gratitude to all you misson/camapign builder!

Yes, it's going to be very accurate. In answer to the questions: we're modelling the most common Finnish version and are considering versions with ski's, 20mm cannons and retractable landing gear. But versions are really not important right now. Finishing the basic model is.

Nice crap planes mentioned already. Just love the Bristol Bulldog pickup for the Winter War. But wish to see even crapier planes. So please substitute Blackburn Roc for Boulton de Paul Defiant, the I-5 for any I-15 & I-152, Wirraway in lieu of Boomerang, Fiat CR.32 for CR.42, the Gloster Gauntlet for the Gladiator. An Arado AR68 or Heinkel He51 for the Germans, Mitsubishi A5M or Nakajima Ki27 for the Japanese, Curtis Hawk III or Severesky P35 for the Americans and either Farman F222 or Amiot 143 for our French friends to do daylight bomber operations. As for fighters, just make those Morane 406's flyable or those unflyable Caudrons that were delivered to Finland in 1940.

Well, to me, the most important planes missing right now from the Winter War are: Fokker D.XXI,

Not that this brings anything new to the discussion, but yes, crap planes do, in fact, rule. I wish more of the full 'real'/difficulty servers ran early war maps with these puppies. As it is, when any of these planes is available on a server, it's pointless to fly it because everyone else will be in something that can outrun/turn circles around it.

got to think of it, we seem to be referring biplanes as crappy planes, that seem to me to be a mistake http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

The Gladiator was an excellent airplane, it just came a little too late, very rapidly getting replaced by the Hurricanes and early Spitfires in the RAF.

Please add the Fairey Battle to the crap plane list. A great plane with a poor bomb load and weak armament (though it did score the first RAF kill of the war). My uncle was shot up in one during France 1940, but lived to tell the tale (he certainly thought they were crap! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif).

I also second the I-15bis, a very useful crap plane for Winter War & Summer 1941.

I am sick of all the late war zoom fodder. Show up at any major airshow and P51s are a dime a dozen. Yawn... Put a Gladiator on the flight line and watch the true afficianado's jaws drop!

Viva early war flight simming! Please no more late war experimental rockets! Bring on the Forgotten Crap! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

It's not that we think strange planes are really crap.

I hear that from the guys in P51, FW190 and Yak9s all the time.

There's nothing more satisfying online than down Mustangs and Focke-Wulfs in I-153 or P.Z.L. This happens surprisingly often when they make the mistake to turn fight.

As far as crappy machines, the Breguet 19 light biplane bomber, with its 210 kmh of max speed, was a remarkable one ...

While for the "what if" scenario I wovote for the Campini Caproni CC2 jet plane, the first jet to fly in the world, on Aug. 28th, 1940 (apart from He.178 secret flight of Aug. 27th, 1939).

I recently met a witness of the CC.2 first flights in Linate Airport ....

Risso/Finish campaign of WINTER WAR is coming.
I have been working on it for months, though not daily. It consists of 42-45 missions beginning some three weeks before 30.11.1939 (that´s the beginning date).

It has been a difficult work to do. For Finns had some 100 aeroplanes while Russians had about 1.000 aeroplanes at the beginning. Finns got a handfull more while Russians got a lot more. I have had to study a bit of history to understand how everything happened.

I will upload the "WINTER WAR" in close future. Don´t know yet if I should wait till the next add on for proper aircraft or not. Anyway, it is coming "soon" At the moment I`m trying to create proper tracks. They are not going to be awsome http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif, but I´ll try my best.

Status of "Winter War" by 31.1.2004: 42-missions long campaign played through ones. In general good, but I am totally confused with proper units etc. The main battles for a player are: SUMMA (a village not printed on the game map), GULF OF VIIPURI and RIVER OF VUOKSI.

>How about an add on campaign for the Finnish Winter War of 1940? We could have the Fokker D XXl and some other mediocre planes to play with. Maybe even a real role for the TB 3, although I don't know if they were used then. Any thoughts?

Even the germans (JG54) used the Fiat's for
some time. After they "took over" Austria.
By the beginn of the war they were used in
the training role.

I want in on this party! Crap plane are far more fun than the drag racing air canons of late-war.

I am fortunate enough to have bounced a 262 in an I-153. I caught him landing and put a round up his left engine.

Nice to hear there's winterwar campaing in the works. If you can find it, one fine account of winterwar days can be found in Ilmari Juutilainen's (top finnish ace) book called
'Punalent¤jien kiusana' (Annoyance for red pilots) which was written after the war.
There's about 50 pages concerning air fighting
in winter war. The text is not boring and wry
like in most post war books done by some researcher but rather lively and personal.

He describes fe. some desparete battles in Karelian isthmus where he and his wingman flying fokkers attack alone russian "herds" with about 100 bombers and 100 fighters. Or tales about finnish aa-men and infantry shooting everything that flies including own planes and so on.
