I downloaded it overnight, but never had a chance to install it. What is it? Is it worth intalling or i shouldn`t even bother...cause if it`s not communicating with HL somehow... how am i gonna gather my old crowd?
Anyone?

Thanks a bunch in advance!

If you want to HOST a server and not play on the same machine then thats what its for.

Why download it if you don't know what its for ? There goes the UBI bandwidth... how annoying... I wonder how many other people are just downloading it 'cos its a big file and they like big files on their hard disk.

XyZspineZyX

I had a vague idea that was its use, but there was no way I was gonna d\l it till I knew what it was. And I won`t now!

The main question is does joining over IP work ?

I am more conserned how it works vs Hypelobby... i don`t want to deal with gamespy, ubi or all seeing eye...or whatever it is out there. That is my main consern. I know what dedicated servers do, i am curious how this one works /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

I don't understand 2 things about the dedicated server:

1) Why in the FECK is it +300Meg? My intention is not to bash anyone but this size is simply ridiculous.

2) Why is there no UNIX version? boggles the mind (my mind at least).

It uses USGS apparently but as yet at 98% of download so can't verify.

I just had one question....sorry two questions...lol

Can the host computer be crappy, since it will not be 3D generating.

I ask, because I have a PIII 500 w/512mb that I'd like to use on my home network as the dedicated server.

Will this be enough machine to run the server?

AND

Can I access the server remotely (for example with a password) from another computer to change maps and setup and stuff.

I host a Ventrilo Server and I can remotely make changes to the server with out actually be on the computer hosting, just by entering a adminstrator password....is this possible.

I don't want to d/l this if I can't use it.

Thanks

Ok,Ok I admit it I downloaded without giving it a second thought...now its clear I really don't need it...so ( dumb question...) where is it stored so I can get rid of it??? Thanks!

No kidding. The 11th commandment should be:

Thou shalt support UNIX with thy dedicated game server.

If I could run this thing on unix, I'd be scripting my rear off all week... imagine what one could do with perl, mysql, and a dedicated server binary.

I'm guess yes. I ran FB on dual 500 mhz celerons when it first came out. Since FB is not SMP enabled, it was only using one processor. IT played like total crap, but thats with AI/ graphics overhead... without these, it should work. Don't blame me if it doesn't though.

According to the document posted in another thread: yes.

As for the questions about HL: I suspect it will work without problem.. i doubt it will report itself to HL though.

Ridiculous? I think not. You think creating a server is easy. It is not just acking as a data re-distributor. The AIs the host put into the server has to act as if hosting through the sim.

I believe there are a lot of win32 constructs relating to threading and IPC are not the easily ported to Unix.

Your concerns are pretty much founded .

I tested several things so far maybe others have found solution s for it.

1.st
Joining over ip doesnt work at least on LAN.
This results in all gameservices not integrated into masterserver (security overview) may not work with it.
(Tried HL no avail maybe wrong setup on my side)

2.nd starting dedicated without logging in does not work so you need a Internet connection. Maybe there is a way to start il2server.exe with command params.

Didnt test further if FbDaemon runs cause intrest in dedicated faded away for the moment.

It is ridiculous, creating a server is not easy, and I didn't imply that. your deduction is flawed. I designed already a couple of server-client mechanisms so I know what I am talking about (in contrast to you IMHO)

Why dont people think about what there doing before they do it.

Didnt it even cross your mind something must be strange since its a 300mb dl?

I think it should run it but maybe only 12 to 14 player even that might be too much maybe 8 or 10 players your just going to have to set it up & test it cuz UBI dam sure isint giving any decent Information about the ded.exe

I mean dang they dont even explain that you dont need it unless your going to be hosting a dedicated server so all kinds of people are dl this 300mb file & they dont even need it hello UBI HELLO !!!!!

Yes you could, even without dedicated server... turn off graphics, disable sound, run on min resoultion possible with windowed mode. Look out for the size of the maps tho, 512 of RAM is not whole alot.
I would start with 10ppl and see how it goes. How`s your connection?

That is another answer that i am looking for lol. You can do it tho VIA PCAnywhere or Netmeeting. Even now.

Sorry guy...but I'm trying to remedy the situation , so sit back & give me a break...Many of us out here ,don't do computers full time & are really learning thru this game site...So I tell you what be a little more patient & I'm sure you'll be able to download this & now if you don't mind too much perhaps someone out there will simply , quietly & patiently tell me how to correct my unthinking mistake...

If you don't know what it's for don't kill the bandwidth for those of us who have been waiting for it over a year and a half now.

Have timed out twice on our 1gigabit connection to the internet.... Ubi is being hammered by folks d/lding this who will never use it...

Help out the hosts out there who need this d/l... If you don't know what this is all about OR you are going to host over dsl on your game box....Stop your d/l please. We at TX have a server in a national data center and would love to grab the dedicated server.. We would even be glad to mirror the d/l once we grab the file..
