OK guys (and gals), "47 Heaven" is finished. I have just uploaded it to my website (please forgive the layout it's not my strong point web design), and it's ready now.
Now just so you know what it's about, here is a brief outline.
It's not historical, it's not a story (as such), it is various dogfights, all captured from online fighting using the P-47 as the weapon of choice. I have found this plane to be a reliable and awesome killing machine, and have taken time to learn how to use it.
So, after saving some of my favourite kills, I have edited them into a movie, with desturated colour, motion sketching and explosion shake.
I hope you enjoy it, and can I just say thanks to all the Bf-109 pilots (many of the kills) who gave their lives in the production of this film.

Anyway, the link is here and please sign my guest book or post feedback here, thanks.

Downloading now. I have high hopes. I will edit this once I've watched.

Verdict: Very enjoyable, as a series of great action shorts, but I see lots of you flying a jug at the same speed of the Messerschmidts you are shooting down, which is a no-no.

Personally, I also prefer the more plot driven films like your stalingrad or Pawnee's new Bellum. Good stuffs all the same.

In the part Zero to... zero! you shoot down a frank, not a zero. Its a very small oversight, but i love wtaching them get blown up even more than Zero's http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif.

In the part i just mentioned, i like the shot where the debris flys by. Awsome movie!

S! Mysticpuma

Some of the music selections you use in your latest chapter brought some old memories back...The Byrds, The Animals, and Elmer Berstein...enjoy hearing them again. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Puma some great gunnery shots and some good flying in "The Jug".

It is a great weapon of choice once you learn how to use it's strength and it's weakliness.

What I like about this film is even the best pilots out there...get shot down every once in awhile. Some great captures of that happening! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Enjoy the film...Great Job!! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

The Music! The Music! The Music!

Dude... you gotta be really happy with yourself http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

The best music in a IL2 film IMO!

And that's just the music http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Then there's the fact that sometimes your movies look like you shot real planes on Super 8 film!

And how can you make the IL2 explosions look like they came straight out of ILM studios? You can almost feel the blast and smell the burning gasolene.

When I'm watching some of the crashes I'm thinking "Ooooh, nasty! That's gotta hurt!". Know what I mean?

And how do you get those camera angles?

Dude you need to write it all down and put it on that site of yours.

But mostly I want to know how can you fly that dog of a plane so it looks like the most graceful little pup that ever took to the skies? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/35.gif

Great movie Neil. I hope there will be many more to come!

Did I mention I really liked the music? It's got The Byrds in it! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Cheers,

A teardrop appears in the corner of one eye. Thankyou to all of you who have replied. It did take a while to do, but this makes it all worth the effort. My favourite of all the takedowns is Turn! Burn! Turn!, mainly because of all the effort it took to out-turn two 109's even with a shot up Jug. The P-47 has to be (post patch 2.01) one of the best all-round planes in the game. It just takes time, I suppose like all planes, to learn how to get the best from it, and for six months that's what I've been trying to do.

Oh, Huxley, I will, now you've suggested it,but not just yet, put a tutorial and explanation file of how it was done on my website in the near future, just taking a break and basking in the glory at the mo! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

What a great film!

The jug is by far my favorite plane to fly in FB and I consider myself good at flying it but your one hot pilot in it mysticpuma!

I love that scene of the bombs dropping and the rockets fireing when diving.

I'll watch that again and again for some inspiration before I take the Jug out for a spin.

Great movie, Mysticpuma! I really liked your music choices. The chapters were good in one way, but in another way I felt the movie stopped and started all the time, but it made me intersted too lol.

I really liked the "DIE *******IT !" chapter! It's so very true. 2 days ago, when I flew the P-47 against two of my squadmates it was just like that. No matter what they punched into me, the P-47 still stuck together. I had no right wingtip, holes all over the plane, 1 elevator, all guns jammed, holes in the canopy, broken gunsight, oily cockpit, fuel leak, rudder controls jammed, and broken engine. Just like its reputation.

Good looking pictures and good camerawork too! Hope to see more of your work! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Well.... I see everybody loves yur movie Puma..... and I hate to be allways first but....... I don't like it http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

As u maybe remember me from VWC forum, my favorite thing in this kind of movies is atmosphere. And I think it is possible to create in every kind of it. Your movie, I think, want to be funny movie about skirmish with nice look.... and for me u didn't reach the goal.

And if u would use music like "Blink 182" all the time (I mean not all the time this band but this kind of music) it could be better. I like many of sings u added to this movie but with it I just don't like it. Sorry.

I think also that u've created 18 minutes of movie about shooting down your enemys on P47. Ok. I understand. But almost every situation of shooiting down was shot by u in same way. Every time the same way of pictures, shots and all this stuff. Sorry.... I was bored after 5 minutes of first part. Everything was in same way.

I see u have big experience and everybody can see u have very good technic of making such movies. But as for me u didn't use it in good way in 47-Heaven. I know it was from online games but u could create something much more interesting. It was for me all the time same situation because u created it like that.

And one more thing. Maybe I'm the only one who saw it but..... the majority of shots down were BF109. I didn't see any FW190, Yaks, Laggs, LA's and all this stuff. I saw once KI84, good. And I know why.... only BF109 u can shoot down in such short time and in such atractive way cuz it's is the most delicate plane in this game. No offence to your skills in flying P47, I think u fly well, but it reminds me the big bugs of this game and I was irriteted when I was looking at your movie by this reason. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Sorry for my poor english and not realy good opinion. But as I see I'm the only one so u don't need to be moved by me http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Best regards

OK, mostly positive, thanks for those guys.

73GIAP_GSXR1000 , the music is all in order in the end titles, which I'm sure you've watched because it contains another takedown between the text screens.

Labienus, we all are entitled to our own opinion, and if you didn't like it, that's fine. Thanks for taking the time to download it and post a response though. As for the Bf-109 being the main plane being shot down, well as I (and you in your response) mention, they are all from online dogfights. I have no influence over which planes the other pilots choose, just the ones that decided to engage me and die.
I am about to start work on my last and final movie, which I hope will please you, as it will be story, atmosphere and action driven.

S! all Jug Pilots, get to know this bird, and you learn to love it! Cheers, Neil.

I think my favorite scene would have to be the final crash in "Smokey is the bandit:2". I love it when planes crash and skid like that, and stay intact.

MP--

Can you please tell us how and with what loadout you fly the jug? Specifically, fuel%, convergence, loadout, always keep above XXX kph on speedbar, Y notches of flaps give best turn at ZZZ speed, tactics, etc. Your movie has inspired me to learn this bird, but I know very little about her ('cept she dives better than anything).

Mysticpuma2003

trumper, I find the P-47 the easiest plane to fly, with one of the best wepaon load-outs in the game. This gives me great scope to create a movie, and that's just about all I have to say on that matter. Well only to add that it's my last FB movie, and I have something historical and action based for Pacific Fighters when it's released, the story behind which moved me when I saw it.

Sithspeeder....ooooo where to start!
I know it has been said many times before, but it really is all about practise.
I made a concious decision to dedicate my time flying the P-47 and not to 'try' this plane or that plane. That way I have become aware of it's attributes, strengths and weaknesses. By only flying the one type, it soon becomes second nature to 'feel' what is happening with the plane and when your getting into a situation that you know instinctively is not going to play into the strenghts of your plane.

That said however, these are a few of my prefs., for online DF play;

Fuel 50%, this gives enough to climb like a rocket usually around 5k, fly a sortie, unleash devastation using mainly B&Z tactics, destroy ground aircraft if it's allowed, and get back to base. Post patch, the P-47 soaks up punishment like it should, and rarely gets a smoking engine.
Loadout depends on server. If the map has a reasonable distance between bases, and ground attack is allowed, then I'll go for maximum impact with 1000lb bomb + 2 500lb bombs and 6x 4.5 rockets. I must state that to get airborne you will need the whole of the runway though! If there is no ground attack, the extra weight would be a huge burden so I go straight for 'extra ammunition', which gives me a huge amount of ammo to play with and death to dish out.
Convergence on the is set at 250m, the rockets at 500m with rocket delay at 10 secs and bomb delay at 0 secs.

I know this is goin to be a bit obvious, but the 47 is really a B&Z plane, and even though I took a few of the planes down in the movie from the same height, that was only when I knew that there were no other enemy near enough to intercept me. So speed should always be as high as possible, get in, do damage, get out. If the first pass doesn't take them out, use your momentum to gain your altitude, and repeat the tactic. For maximum speed on the dive keep flaps raised and depending on your altitude you can attain anywhere around the 850 mark before easing back on the stick to keep speed and control, bringing you back up to a good altitude again.

Hope that helps, thanks for the interest, another P-47 joins the ranks.

Great post, MP. But it begs even more questions....Is there an altitude or speed at which roll rate is at its best (in game, not IRL)? Is there an altitude at which it is at the top of its game over X, Y, or Z? When you were getting bested online, what tactics were being being used against you and by what planes and fight styles? When you zoom with this plane, do you typically do shallow dives and climbs or do you go truely vertical until stall (hammerheads and such)--then pounce? What do you use to escape attackers, especially when low and slow (call for help, scissors, get them to expend their ammo)? What aircraft did you find to be particularly lethal to the 47 (e.g., the cannons of the XYZ only needed a few hits to bring it down)?

If you ever want a wingie, I'd love to get online and give it a go (like with comms or something).

Thanks.

This post has been deleted as it was unfair to Scragbat, I had a bit of a sense of humour failure, and took his post out of context. I feel it is time that I put the shovel down and move away from the hole I was digging. What I meant to say was

"Oh very funny Scragbat", sometimes we lose the plot, and this is what happened here. Yes it's true you were pants at MOH, but it was those little moments of self induced death that kept me going.

Look Scrag, when it comes down to it, we both fly online, you pissed all over me the other night, and I had 'a moment'of 'the wibbles'. Nuff said, re-install FB, load up your website and let me put the rattle back in my pram!

Erm.. I have downloaded part I and II AND the codec but they still don't work.

Even if I am fully responsible for my brain running at low CPU speed due to sleep deprivation and over-consumption of alcohool, would someone please tell me where they think I might be going wrong?

I really want to watch those movies..!!!

Thank you.

Well, I have recently had to format my drive and re-install everything, including all my codecs.
I have installed DivX 5.10, I don't know if this is the latest one or not but I know that Puma's film plays flawlessley with this.

If you have a different version installed try un-installing it and going for this one. Google should find it OK.

The only other codes I have so far installed are huffyuv (lossless codec for my editing) and XviD for encoding...

Good Luck

I think it's to do with compression - smaller filesize without losing quality.

Another Question: In your movies there is never any pop-up of objects over cities (i.e. buildings appearing as you approach them). How is this acheived?

Wow, Sithspeeder, lots of questions there, sorry for the delay in getting back to you, been busy. I'll try to answer as many as I can, but let me say I'm in no way an expert, so if anyone else who has experience with the 47 wants to chip in please do so.

Altitude that the roll rate is best or speed: Well I have to say, that these are not the things I'm looking at when attacking, and to be fair I'd be misleading you if I start realing off stats, that I can't back-up. I will say that since the patch 2.01, the roll rate is real fast at most speeds, and only gets sluggish in the 230-250 range.
Altitude: Well as the plane is a B&Z plane, it's not really a plane for altitude chasing, even though at 5k-10k it scoots like a rocket, with a slight nose down! The only planes I've found difficulty with are the 109's which seem to climb like an Apollo 5 with just the slightest dip and climb technique, and the Ki-84 is easily beatable unless it has the height advantage on you, in which case it's a bloody nightmare!
Bested online, is usually done with the above two techniques, but I tend now to fly with a squaddie who is then able to bait the opposition, or cover my tail when I do the same.
B&Z for me, just depends on the positional advantage, if the enemy is making it's get-away, I'll check locality for any other opposition which could be watching it's tail, and if clear take a long swoop in, hitting anything upto 850, before ripping it with all barrels, then getting back upto height, to come back in again. Hammerheads and stall turns are really not useful unless trying to outfly someone on your tail (so-far that has been true, but it's an option to keep open).
Escape attackers: Well this could take a while, but I'll keep it brief. The plane is B&Z mainly. Stay high, you wont die. However if you get caught in a turn fight, the 47 can soak up a lot of punishment (which is accurate), andthe skill comes in throttle, flap and stall control.
Check out how the plane on your six is coming at you...is it fast? Drop flaps to combat or landing to induce drag. Throttle back and make sharp S turns until he overshoots. Flaps raised, throttle up, nose down, gain spedd and bring yourself in to him. It's difficult to explain, as it happens real fast,a dn eventually comes naturally. I can't over emphasise the usefulness of a wingman to back you up or for you to support! Expending the ammo, with this style of fighting usually works on a less experienced player. Most experienced players know the value of their ammo and really only let loose when a shot has almost 100% chance of tagging the target, to the point of flying past and circling back onto the targets 'six', to save valuable ammo.
Planes most lethal to the 47: Usually anything flown by Scragbat (b**tard...lol), but the ones that have cannon rounds like the 109 are deadly if tagged by them, but this is where flying technique is so important. Remeber, get high. There's nothing more fun than watching a plane head up to your altitude, and see it's rate of climb drop-off to the point of stall, which lets you move in and shoot down an almost stationary target.
The Ki-84, as I already said are deadly, but only if they have the height advantage on you.

Well that's about as much as I can offer you on that. I'll trawl through my tracks in the next week or so, and see if I can upload a couple that show how I fly. Cheers, Neil. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I can't DL part 2... It says the size is 730 kB and that it doesn't match the expected file size.

I'm right clicking and saving the target as but to no avail. Please advice...

I can confirm that part II is only 730KB and I have spoken to Mysticpuma about it. We both use the same ISP and have both seen our websites dissapear this week and have had things go missing. There was an announcement from Pipex (our ISP) about webserver problems which have since been fixed but some files have gone missing or become corrupted.

Mysticpuma will upload part II again tomorrow for the second time this week!

Yes, part 2 will be back online at 10.00am GMT. Damn Pipex sometimes.

Huxley said "Another Question: In your movies there is never any pop-up of objects over cities (i.e. buildings appearing as you approach them). How is this acheived?"

Well, this is more luck than judgement, but a couple of things that definately help are;

1) Make sure that in the video setup you have draw distance set to maximum ( I presume you have this already) and then...

2) there are three main camera or field of view settings, wide, medium, and narrow. In camera terms the medium and narrow (read medium or long lens), will compress perspective, and so bring the background in closer. For some Forgotten Battles reason, this acts like a compression of the draw distance, and buildings that would normally 'pop-up', don't, they get draw in full detail, which is how I do it. I try and set the camera up so it is on the medium or long lens setting and pull the camera back from the plane to show ground detail. Hope that helps Huxley.

Best FB movie I've ever seen. The fights and music were great, but I think the little details like the grainy picture and camera shake (especially during the explosions) made it undeniably stylish and cool. I was literally tearing with laughter at the last scene. Top notch work.
