Post your thoughts on this map for online play. Is it too big?

No its not too big.

But it has 500,000 ground objects, mostly buildings, and you never see them when you are on the other side of the map.

Luthier posted that the Building Objects are what makes the loading and memory performance problems...never mind the fps hits when you fly low over the Lenningrad. He also said the Building Objects are the major hold up in map making.

No buildings and Gulf of Finland would perform much like smaller maps now.

No buildings and with P~51 we could fly online from England to Berlin, from Berlin to Moscow, all on one Pan~Euro map with just the major rivers and major roads and basic terrain.

300MB+ can`t remember actual size. I think it`s too big from sea to grond and two small for sea to sea http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif (Those two bases)

Kozhedub: In combat potential, the Yak-3, La-7 and La-9 fighters were indisputably superior to the Bf-109s and Fw-190s. But, as they say, no matter how good the violin may be, much depends on the violinist. I always felt respect for an enemy pilot whose plane I failed to down.

Very big and very demanding map. Too big for basic online play although it would be fine for coops I think.

What would be great was if the game was setup to dynamically load the buildings in as necessary. Because it seems like the buildings are loaded regardless of them being visible or not. What should be done is some nice middle ground solution to prevent in-game pauses while loading them in and prevent long load times.

Then maps of such size would be more common.

the GoF map has been made more online freindly since v1.22

my POS system used to struggle flying on the GoF , but ever since v1.22 patch its a lot smoother (take that LEXX for a un-talked about online feature http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif)

it runs ok for my computer if i host low number of people . . . . .
wether you want to DF or COOP keep the extra added objects to a minimum

making FB run smooth online is a subject close to my heart as i dont have the fastest computer & i started gaming online with a 56K connection (that never gave more than 48K) . Ive hosted a lot of coops & DF rooms & seen what hurts & what helps

mmm, now that you mention it, I think GOF does load faster now. I so rarely use it I never had reason to admit this possibility to myself...seems I just kept it in back of my mind.

Offer a map version with No Buildings and you have your super smooth fast 400km x 200km online map.

It is not too big. I personally hate furball servers where airfiels are only few kilometers apart; there is hardly any excitement when all the time someone is buzzing around you. But in big map you can enjoy flying in potentially dangerous environment (and have some sight-seeing too). You also have to be careful with your fuel. It gives you a totally different feeling. Its like you really ARE in wartime patrol. It takes more time but it as so much awarding IMHO.

Naturally there has to be some hot-spots where you can expect action. A well-made FBD-server with moving frontlines is my heaven.

My best moments online have been in GoF.

It is a very good map. I have an online DF that I host occaisionally using bases in the Northeast corner of it. A very little seen but visually interesting area. Especially in winter.

The Gulf of Finalnd is the nicest map IMHO.

The smaller online version makes you wonder why they didn't cut out more bits for quick-loading online-maps. The work is already done. They just need to cut them and save with a new name. It can't be that hard, can it? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
