View Full Version : Complete WWII plane set...ever happen?

There seems to be a constant push to have more planes added to aging game engines. Eventually games are abandoned by their developers in favor of new game engines with more eye candy, features, etc. The problem here is that many man hours are spent modeling aircraft for a particular game and when the new game comes along it seems the process starts over again at square one with only a handfull of aircraft to chose from. Is it possible to salvage some of this work and carry it to the next level?

Will we ever see a game that encompasses the entire WWII conflict in one neat package with all of the important aircraft included as flyable? I hope that more data and lost information on WWII aircraft continues to surface. Furthermore, I hope that this information would be shared with any company ambitious enough to undertake this daunting task.

Also, I would like to see more emphasis placed on multi engine aircraft in future games as most have largely focussed their attention on single engine aircraft.

I agree, I tried convincing them to convert all the IL@:FB planes to the new BOB engine but was told it was too hard - which I had already guessed but was pipe dreaming when I wrote the post.

I was really excited when it looked like Forgotten battles would drag all the planes from IL2 into the new Forgotten Battles and hailed the new ERA of the modular sim.

All they need is to build a damn conversion tool and valla, just a little more work and you have all the planes - let the community skin em

Its not gonna happen though - just a pipe dream and never been done before because of the complexities that all new engines introduce. Backwards cmpatability basically limits any new engine.

Look at what windows has to do to stay backwards compat.

There is no point doing the job by halves either, if you want the planes they have to be quality and not some two bit import from an older program.

Its a fact of life until we get truly learning programs that understand like we do how to adjust and balance the imported models while bringing them upto the new engines standards and new features.

So there is yours and my dream handed back to you on a plate.

Sorry M8

But don't Worry because forgotten battles will come fairly close once the Pacific expansion is released and the second add-on after aces addon

I shot a post out there like that awhile ago.

I've come to realize it probably won't happen though, the WWII flight sim genre isn't popular enough. Don't get me wrong I'd love a a game that covers everything in the entire war. But then again I'd probably fail out of school and lose my job so maybe its best we keep things where they are. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

One problem could be what counts as an important aircraft? Based just on users of this forum i think there would be many different views on this issue. Still, i think FB is moving in the right direction and the plane set is expanding nicely. Sometimes i think that having a expanded plane set (esp early war, med, and pacific) and better AI would be better than a sequel that has better graphics but fewer planes. However, fewer planes, better graphics and better AI is probably better than more planes (i cant fly one plane well so having a hundred to choose from probably too much for my little brain).

Well, that's going to be impossible I think. Their where numerous countries with numerous aircraft involved and so, getting a complete WWII set is impossible, I think.

You can however make as much planes available as possible. It is a much more realistic goal.

1 Judge not, that ye be not judged.
2 For with what judgment ye judge,
ye shall be judged: and with what
measure ye mete, it shall be measured
to you again.

On topic comment:
This is what the (dare I say it) CFS series and MS Flight simulator was supposed to do. You could constantly import new planes with DMs all made up so they would integrate into MS's combat sims. Don't know what happened to that whole idea, but that was the buzz way back when CFS was coming out.

I'll never happen with FB's level of detail, yet alone BoB...

It's hard enough to find the information needed to model a plane and cockpit with the detail standards required for FB. In fact there's already a few planes that can't be flyable just because there is no detailed information on their cockpits (Arado 196, Su-2...).

A complete WWII planeset can only happen by cutting corners: Simple models, generic cockpits, unnacurate FM... It could be fun though, but it wouldn't be up to FB's standards http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I have high hopes that BoB will go back and do as many theaters as possible. It'd be nice to jump off from BoB...do the entire Western europe perspective, do the Med. perspective, and then go back the Eastern Europe again.

Having them all in one final package (in a sense we do sort of have that) would make for some fantastic times!

It would eb reallie sad to lose all thats been done in this sim. Soooo Sadddd. The graphics are so far good enough, the flight models excellent, the game is fun online, both bombers and fighters flyable. They should just stick to expanding this until at least 2-3 years. I'd rather pay for expansions than a whole new game!!! Peace out!

Haha, not quite Chuck: Viola is a stringed instrument or at least Gwyneth Paltrow's character in 'Shakespeare in Love'.

The French say 'Voila!'

As they would say 'Salut!', or Cheers! where I come from. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

PS Are you going to treat us to all of the Clash songs? You are obviously a big fan and there's nothing wrong in that!

Clash songs?
Here's a good one. Apologies for miss-spellings, I don't speak much Spanish. I only know two phrases, and one of them is dirty

Spanish songs in Andalusia,
The shooting sites in the days of '39
Oh, please leave the vendanna open
Fredrico Lorca is dead and gone
Bullet holes in the cemetery walls,
The black cars of the Guardia Civil
Spanish bombs on the Costa Rica
I'm flying in a DC 10 tonight

[Chorus]
Spanish bombs, yo tequierro y finito
Yote querda, oh mi corazon
Spanish bombs, yo te quierro y finito
Yo te querda, oh mi corazon

Spanish weeks in my disco casino
The freedom fighters died upon the hill
They sang the red flag
They wore the black one
But after they died it was Mockingbird Hill
Back home the buses went up in flashes
The Irish tomb was drenched in blood
Spanish bombs shatter the hotels
My senorita's rose was nipped in the bud

[Chorus]

The hillsides ring with "Free the people"
Or can I hear the echo from the days of '39?
With trenches full of poets
The ragged army, fixin' bayonets to fight the other line
Spanish bombs rock the province
I'm hearing music from another time
Spanish bombs on the Costa Brava
I'm flying in on a DC 10 tonight
Spanish songs in Andalusia, Mandolina, oh mi corazon
Spanish songs in Granada, oh mi corazon

I suppose someone would have to define "Complete." Germany designed and built one-offs of a dozen a/c that flew less than 100 sorties combined. What's a go-229?

I'd settle for a representative group of a/c, those involved in significant combat roles, in each of the major theaters -- including all of Asia. That would keep me buying expansion packs as long as I could see a screen.

It's already too late for FB...with BoB's new platform on the way. And it seems unlikely that any software company will be able to stay with the same platform long enough to fill this wish...given the time and resources required and the pace of change. Sorry.

Winning isn't everything;
It's the only thing!
