As some of you who frequent these boards may know, I'm brand new to the whole IL2 world and also new to Flight sims. I'm not a pilot in real life, just an aviation enthusiast who also happens to be hooked on military history AND gaming.

I aspire to playing online and perhaps one day getting good enough to join a squadron. In order to practice in IL2 and to figure out how I want my controls mapped etc ( I recently invested in some good rudder pedals and a Track IR3) I have been flying 1v1 with the aces. In particular I've been taking an inferior plane against aces in a superior plane. Typically I'm in a 42 vintage P-40 and flying against Eric H. in a ME109 or some of the other German Aces also in 109's. Please note, I'm not trying to start a flame war here. (I've noticed that people can get kinda touchy about the planes that are near and dear to their hearts around here so if anyone is ofended by my classification of the planes described as inferior or superior, I apoligize in advance. This is not what the thread is about.) My thought is simply that if I can whoop on the aces flying an inferior plane I might be ready for an online drubbing. I've also been around gaming enough to know that playing the AI is completely different to playing online. Again my thought here is to just get my basics down.

What I'm hoping for is some of you old timers to watch a couple of my tracks and give me some pointers. I plan on reading up on the subject too but I figure if you want the real scoop then go right to the pointy end of the spear as it were. I understand that many of these 1 v 1 dogfights eventually end up on the deck with 1 plane (usually me!) chasing the other for the eventual shootdown, but what I'm interested in, and what I believe to be critical is the opening of the engagement, the first few moments after we flash past and the fight is on.

So once again, If anyone could please downlaod these tracks and take a peek and give some constructive criticism if needed, that would be great!

Thanks in advance All!

Wicked tracks http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif What skin is that, it looks like Servals excellent base metal skin and i did a skin or too on it, but i will keep quiet if its one of mine as the star should be on the other wing hehehehe http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

You dont tend to get a lot or flying past and looping combat but as you say it progresses downwards, you also tend to get a lot of head on attacks initially so a lot of heavy fire power comes in handy for those, I also think you will find a heck of a difference between AI and NI online pilots.... NI is No Inteligence hehehehehe http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif you will also get the boom and zoom attacks, that is they come in high dive down use their superior speed to do a slashing attack on you then climb using the speed advantage to get ready for there next attack, also online you might be lined up on the perfect kill but have em lined up behind you like a taxi rank waiting to kill you..

I would if I were you just jump in and try it, you will wonder why you didn't sooner and kick yourself for not doing it, there are rooms where people fly to learn, especially on UBI.com.... not so much on Hyperlobby, but then again i do not look for them so they may well be there.

So best Advice GO FOR IT and get online...

Btw the last version i played off line was IL2 the original... everything else including all of the patch versions of il2 il2 FB and Aces I have never played them off line at all, is it any good? I bought them for online play and thats all i use em for http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Loki was indeed the Norse God of mischief. He was also my first greyhound puppy who grew to live up to his namesake. Speaking of Cats... I had two in college. I called them "Cat" and "Grep".

I am an American although my grandparents came from the Scandinavian countries so the mythology thing seemed a natch. The part of the USA that I'm from has a high concentration of people of Scandinavian descent so there's lots of people round here who got my dogs name.

Kinda funny though, if you know anything about greyhounds they are like 50 MPH couch potatos.... very quiet and mellow dogs. People who didn't know who the real Loki was thought my dogs name was "Low-Key" as in mellow! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Thanks for the comments all. I will try online with one of the full real servers!

Salute JG52Uther !

Thank you for the kind words. I am a little puzzled though. When you say , "i wish i could turn a 109 like you are doing with the p40!" are you saying the 109 doesn't turn as well as the P40 or that you personally cant turn it that well?

I'm not trying to start an argument just trying to find things out. My assumption was that the 109 was lighter and faster better armed AND could turn better than the P40. This is why I've tried to use the vertical in the fight with Eric H. The P40 seemms to zoom climb better and do better in the vertical than the 109.

But perhaps I've been operating on false pretenses this whole time. Perhaps for my practice bouts I should be going against an ACE level AI in another plane?

Please advise
Thanks All

I would recommend that you come and fly in the House of Odin, but as you come from the Rune community, I'm leery of that. Still, you seem like a decent chap in spite of it. Give it a try!

Loki,

Good stuff. Now, stop thinking and writing so much and get on line. Join a squadron too if you like to talk.

Don't know what "Rune Community" is? Is that a game? Are you assuming that because of my Avatar pic? If so, it's just a graphic I found trolling around the net that fit my handle so to speak.

Must be a game that sux hella for you to judge me so http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Can I find the house of Odin on HL? I DL'ed HL the other night and flew my first online sortee. Details to follow when I've got more time to wax eloquent, (I'm at work currently) http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

People would say the same type of thing about my cat only it was "He's not very Low-Key or "Do you like pianos or something?"

Thanks for the comments on the skin. I fell in love with them the moment I saw them. I say "them" because the one I'm using came from LeadSpitters most excellent "P-40 Extravaganza!" skin pack

http://www.il2skins.com/?action=display&skinid=8428

The "feral parrot" stole my heart. I liked it even more than the sharkmouth that made me love the P-40 originally!

Thanks Leadspitter!

Sorry, Loki! Yes, it was the avatar. I left Rune in disgust because of the childish Counterstriker players. About all you hear in the chatlog is "**** u *** u suck ***gy *** i h8 u." I can't take that. I need a little more intellectual stimulation, if not friendlier atmosphere.

The House of Odin currently is only on Ubi.com, so I guess we'll not be graced by your presence.

By the way, I'm impressed with your writing style. It's nice to see someone new that doesn't write like "hi im new lol i like fliyng games but dont be 2 hard on me lol well cya online ; )."
