View Full Version : HANGER CRASH!

This is just stupid. First the demo, now the full version. Does UBISOFT even HAVE any QA team? It is going to be real sad when PC Gamer rips this game apart because of the inability to play it. Something that should get a 90% will probably get a 40%. Maybe then, with enough lost revenue, UBISOFT will wake up and test their games (and demos).

Anyhow - with that rant out of the way, just purchased BGE this weekend. Installed, got my son playing and enjoying the game only to hear "DADDY - IT CRASHED". Sure enough, every time going out of the Hanger - like others have reported.

I know, what is my system, blah, blah. 1.2G, 512 Meg Ram, DX9a, ATI 3.9 drivers, 9800 Pro. I won't bother posting my DX info since it is obviously more of an ATI issue since others on this forum that reported it also seem to have ATI cards.

So - what is the lastest? Do I need to "sit tight" for a couple weeks (just like the demo) for some patch to come out? Is there any work around? Are others having this problem (PC Level).

I understand that support will suggest that I a) buy a new machine b) buy a new card c) double click my shoes and wish for home but I would really appreciate an honest answer from support for once. IS this a bug? IF so, how can the game be played (work around)? IF NOT - then how did this slip by (again) and when is the fix coming.

Still shaking my head on this one.....

Check that:

Running DX9.0B.

Don't want TS claiming this is the reason, etc.

Also running WinXP.

Any help would be appreciated....even if it shouldn't have gotten this far (released with obvious bug).

Thanks.

Well, this is UBI's forums, but it's not actual tech support, but it's peer to peer, so the only way I can help you is if you post your dxdiag because I can't tell you anything without it. I doubt it's an ATI thing because it's the Nvidia users who got screwed on this one because they couldn't play the demo. Plus, you got ripped off, this game has a street price of $40. I have the same video card you have, but I have no problems.

My system:

AMD XP 3000+ @ 2.23Ghz
1 gig of Corsair DDR PC2700 RAM @354Mhz
Radeon 9800 Pro video w/TV out core @434, mem @720
Windows XP SP 1
Microsoft Directx 9.0b
Antec TruePower TrueBlue True480 PSU
16x Antec DVD drive
24x10x40 Plexwriter CD-RW
1 Maxtor Diamond 9 160GB SATA hdd
1 Westerndigital 40 gig harddrive
1 Westerndigital 100 gig hdd (external)
Asus A7V600 VIA KT600 mainboard, 4-in-1 4.49
Creative 5.1 surround system
Thermaltake Aquarius II liquid cooling system

Gnogtr:

First, thanks for the quick response.

However, what I was refering to was the AMD patch in the demo. Regardless, a buggy demo for some, a buggy retail for some. THAT was my point. Plus the fact that others are having this exact same problem.

Also - not sure what you are referring to...I paid $39.99 for my BGE copy from Best Buy.

Typo on my part...I have a 9700 Pro. Not a 9800 Pro. Whoops.

Anyhow - here is my DX Diags. I really, honestly, and truely hope this helps in some fashion. I hope to hear back from you (my kid is driving me nuts). Thanks.

Gnogtr:

More info for ya in case you need it.

- Not running any virtual drives
- Attempted a reinstall, no luck
- Tried 2 different CD drives, no luck
- Game runs great up until leaving the hanger.
- Tried running in compat mode, no luck
- Tried various graphical settings, sound settings, no luck

This is the exact issue another user is having on a previous thread. No issues until leaving the hanger, when the game just stops and goes back to Windows. No error messages, nothing.

I really hope this is just something with my computer (and the other user from the previous thread), otherwise, come Tuesday when it is released for real (I assume Best Buy whoops by putting it on shelves early), this may be a big headache for everyone.

Again - anything you could suggest that I haven't tried would be appreciated. My seven year old is bugging me every 10 minutes to "check again" to see if a fix was found.

Thanks.

Ok, here's something I want you to try/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif I was mistaken about your price, it must have been another post I was reading at the same time....)

1. Turn off your automatic updates: Right click my comptuer=>select properties=>click auto updates tab=>uncheck the box that says "keep my computer up to date"

2. Uninstall your ATI drivers. I mean GET RID OF THEM. That means delete all ATI files on your computer.

3. Restart

4. Go to www.viaarena.com (http://www.viaarena.com) and get the 4.49 4-in-1 drivers.

5. Install the drivers.

6. Reboot.

7. Get the Catalyst 3.7 drivers from www.ati.com (http://www.ati.com) and install them.

8. Reboot the computer and try the game.

That may sound like a lot, but it should get your game running. I noticed that you motherboard drivers were dated to 2k1 where as the new ones are dated to 7/2k3. I also told you to get the 3.7 drivers because they are the best in the series. I'm waiting on the release of the 4.0 drivers so they will hopefully have the new sets fixed. The 3.8/3.9 drivers are horribly buggy, and I've alread sent ATI a couple of bug reports. For instance, Splinter Cell has weird colors around the full screen window ?!?...

Let me know if that fixes it.

No luck.

Followed your instructions and the exact same thing happens.

- Installed the 4.49 VIA drivers
- Total uninstall of all ATI drivers, deleted ATI folder
- Installed Catalyst 3.7 drivers
- Auto updates were already turned off.

The load screen for the next area comes up Hilleys (or something like that), and then back to desktop.

Help.

I assume you are gone for the night.

While I still hope you can figure something out that will make this game run, I have to ask - are you running an actual retail version of the game or just a supplied version from Ubisoft? I ask because after looking through other threads it really seems like this quitting to the desktop problem isn't a machine/user issue. In some threads you state to upgrade to 3.9 drivers, yet you tell me to down grade to 3.7 (and I understand why with the stability). Others you state it is the OS that is the problem or the CDROM drive or the CD itself. I am not trying to put you down or make you look bad since I know giving tech help via the web must be a very hard situation - I am just curious if you are using the exact same version (with copy protection and all) that I would have. This bug just really reminds me of the AMD thing where support really didn't know what to say and had all these ideas until it was finally admitted to be a true bug.

Anyhow - I still hope for any help or solutions you could provide. My son is TOTALLY bummed that he can't play this game (got it for his Birthday) and I am a little frustrated that first the demo had "issues" and now the retail verison all seems to.

I look forward to your reponse and any other suggestions you may have. If you hear from your end that this IS a bug and will require a patch, I would appreciate knowing this too so I can just push the game off to the side until this patch comes out.

Thanks again.

Well, believe this: I'm also fighting this on the XIII forums as well, I don't have the game! UBI is supposed to send me a copy, but I'm still waiting, so I haven't had to experence any of these problems for myself, so I don't know exactly how to fix them. One thing you could try is to do exactly what I said and install the 3.9 drivers. It's all different for different computers. Also, if you have another computer, try it on that computer and see if it works, you may have a faulty copy. Also, if you installed it from a cdrw, that can cause problems. Let me know how it goes.

WOW. How the heck do they expect you to really help out without a copy? That is crazy!

Anyhow - I had the 3.9 drivers installed prior to downgrading to 3.7. So, it isn't a driver issue, at least on my machine.

I tried reinstalled from both my CDRW and my DVD drive. No luck.

Also - for reference, I also purchased XIII this weekend and go real nervous since I checked the forums there too. Luckily, to this point (2 levels in), it is working fine.

What really really throws me is that it runs great until leaving the hanger. Then - el crasho.

Obviously, please let us know when you get a copy or you hear about this. I really assume that this is a patch issue now. That is sad because this game looks awesome and Ubisoft looks like, again, they dropped the ball in testing their games.

I will let my son know he has to hang tight for a while on this. I hope the solution/patch is a quick one.

Thanks for your help. Please let us know if you hear anything.

Singe, we are both running pretty much the same processor. I have an Athlon 1.33 GHZ in my machine. I had trouble with the demo until I used the AMD patch. I'm starting to think that the Hanger Crash is a problem with older AMD processors. The game works great on my friends computer, he has pretty much the same system I do, only he recently upgraded to a Athlon XP 1800+. I think I'm gonna go ahead and upgrade my system. My mother board supports up to the 2200+.

Thanks. However, not sure about you, but with the demo, I couldn't even run the program. Now, I can run the entire first level like you.

I have a feeling you are probably correct but it still pi**es me off that the solution is to upgrade or spend more money in any fashion. Add to that, IF it is an AMD issue, then there really is NO excuse for it since they had the same problem with the demo. You would hope they would fix it after the problems they had with the demo.

And while I don't like to point fingers at the online tech here, as a consumer, responses of upgrading your OS, your system, selling it on Ebay, upgrading drivers or downgrading depending on what you have, stating it works on his test machine only to later say he doesn't even have it, installing it from different types of CDROM drives, etc, etc. just really shows me the type of customer support Ubisoft puts forth. Again - I do appreciate some of the attempts of the tech but if you go look through these and XIII forums, the common response is to buy a new system, uninstall something, change drives, return or sell the game or just live with it. Not acceptable.

If you figure out anything else, please let me know. I appreciate it. Until then, I will assume this is just another of the many Ubisoft "screw em"'s.

Got same problem Hanger Crash and i'm not gonna post that long dxdiag spec cause i know its an AMD issue now.

AMD Athlon XP 1800+

- Family.Model.Step 6.6.2

This was a first Generation 1800+ processor, I am also wondering which Model everybody else's processor is that's having this crash. I know there's Model 8 and 10 for higher up AMD XP's

Windows XP
1 Gig PC133 RAM
Original ATI Radeon 64 MB DDR VIVO

I know the V-card is an older model but the game was running perfect until that crash @ the hanger

BTW I played the Demo Version of this game and I had no probs at all. Got through the whole thing and enjoyed it. Its the reason I decided to buy the game....but I'm bummed out because of this crash That Should of Been Thoughly Tested BEFORE shipping.

Damn, I was hoping there'd be a patch or some fix by the time I checked this thread again.

I was tinkering alot trying to get this game to work. Created an Image of CD3 and mounted it on a virtual drive; didn't work because of CD encryption.

Took out my SB PCI 512 Soundcard and tried a diff one....same issue both ways...i get the stupid crash when i try to leave the Hangar. ( I called UBI tech support, not too much help but they suggested that it could be the card)

I did notice however that this crash happens right when the game is reading the Play CD

Yeah, while I am happy to hear a patch MAY be coming soon, just amazes me how the same issue can go from the demo to the retail version. Makes you wonder about the whole QA process (or lack of) that is going on.

But...still...get us the patch soon and it will make the sting a little less painful!

Ugh, i should have waited before buying this game. Now im stuck because of some technicality that affects a bit les than half of the people who bought this game.

On a side note, is there any ways to skip the cutscenes?
