Has anyone tried this game? It's a budget $20 game and 'arcade' at that, just wondering what the hard-core sim fans think.

Yeah, but I heard the Xbox version was 'arcade' and the PC version had more realistic options, and online play. Only thing is there isn't much info online regarding it. As much as my dad would love to fly, computers aren't his thing and the complexities of a real sim are too much for him.

I'm just hoping it's fun.

There is now a fourm dedicated to this game at sim hq. there are all ready 3 mods for it, that make the game play better (more realistic, like removal of rockets etc.).

This has the potential to get modded to a realistic sim. The game is also a lot of fun with incredible graphics.

It's arcade but you can turn all the arcade stuff off, turn off the music, voices etc if you want. Obviously to play the arcade campaign you need some arcade indicators on even temporarily, but the best fun is the instant action dogfights, and with TrackIR3 it is one of the best WW1 dogfight experiences I have had, together with the mod by flyby1 that lets you select any combination of planes for the dogfights, and disable rockets.

Yes the FMs need work, yes it needs some realistic modding for aces and campaign but it has LOTS of polish and content. Things like moving actuators to the wings on the Nieup 17 for instance isn't even in full blown sims.

All I know is what I read in reviews. This is a slice of Gamespot's article on the PC version:

"Although it features a historical setting and combat between realistic-looking period aircraft, about the only thing Wings of War has in common with a hardcore flight sim is that they both feature objects suspended in the air. At its default settings, the game's flight model is arcadelike and wildly forgiving (though you can tweak the controls to make them significantly more realistic, resulting in a game that's more difficult and more rewarding). It's almost impossible to stall the planes, you can bounce them off of obstacles with relative impunity, and, for the most part, they turn less like actual aircraft and more like the light cycles in Tron. They're also equipped with some distinctly non-period gear such as radar, shields, and missiles. On top of all this, the landscape is dotted with pickups that impart standard gamey bonuses like health and speed boosts. It's enough to give cranky flight sim fans a massive, collective stroke, but it's a solid foundation for a decent action game."

Wings of War is a budget title done right. It takes a simple but satisfying central gameplay mechanic and then milks it for all its worth. It's a surprisingly polished game that covers some unique ground in a thoroughly enjoyable way.

I'm having a blast playing this game, actually more so than Il2. It's just incredibly fun. Flyby1's mod definitely improves the game, and there's plenty of talk going on about improving it further. IMO the ground details and topography create a much more interesting and immersive world than anything else I've played, and any sim fan would do themselves a favor by picking up this game. It's definitely not a pure sim, but if you are into having a good time, I don't think you could go wrong. And the price is perfect.

Yes it's an arcade game, but YOU can disable or hide ALL arcade features apart from the missiles, as brajesh108 says there's a mod already to disable those (see the website link I gave). Yes the FM needs changing to be a "sim" but it's mostly very good and as I said one of the best WW1 dogfighting experiences with the weather effects, detail etc. Where this lacks some things it has bundles of good things like atmoshere, fun, detail etc not found in many full price games.

There's LOTS of talk about modding potential and I am sure more will happen with this.

If you just dismiss it you are missing a boat (or plane) load of fun.

Actually, after just playing online and having tons of fun, I have to say this game is really what the flight genre needed, read 'accessable'. A lot of people who otherwise may be put off by the skills needed to compete in Il2 and other 'serious' sims online may find the perfect balance with Wings of War. The game really has the pick up and play quality of great online FPS like Unreal, where a novice won't feel like they can't even keep the plane in the air let alone fight. I wish there were an online demo of this game, as I'm sure that would get loads of people hooked. I just can't wait for the game to sell more so there are more online servers. It's pretty meager right now.
