Kozhedub: In combat potential, the Yak-3, La-7 and La-9 fighters were indisputably superior to the Bf-109s and Fw-190s. But, as they say, no matter how good the violin may be, much depends on the violinist. I always felt respect for an enemy pilot whose plane I failed to down.

If they go OT like Beatles thread or whatever what has nothing to do with the game whatsoever, just use brute force like someone on forum reccomended. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/icon_twisted.gif

Ok OT.

Anyone ever play the Combat Mission Games? I downloaded the Demo Of Combat Mission Afrika Korps and I am having a blast with it. The graphics arent great but there is a lot of strategy involved with it. I am going to buy the bundle pack of Combat Mission 2 and 3 when i get off work. I hope the manual that it comes with will tell me exactly how to use the units I have and what the different terrain features provide as far as cover and the sort.

I've really enjoyed the series. The graphics engine is 4 years old, but as a strategy game the series can't be beat. If you ever liked the close combat series, Combat Mission is the next logical step.

Yeah i think thats the one i got the sight info off of. I think i am in love with this game. I only hope in the Full version i can choose what units i start with and the sort. I hear that Combat Mission has a pretty good following for being such a Niche market. I think this is something that everyone who enjoys WWII combat should be interested in. It's a nice change of pace from flying. I can only fly so many hours a day without needing a break. This looks like it's going to be what I turn to whenever I get to that point. It also helps that it's turn based(in a way). My wife is about to have our first child and i am sure that when he comes that my online flying time is going to be limited. I can't pause IL2 online whenever he starts crying or needs some attention.

Does anyone think they might be able to email me the manual that comes with the game? I know it's included with it but it's going to be a few days before it shows up. I would like to start reading it so I can jump right in whenever the games arrive.

I think that the .303 guns of the Hurricane are too weak modelled in AEP.

Oops. I guess that's on topic. Or is it off topic in a off topic thread? That would make it on topic, doesn't it. Or not?

They wont penetrate the pilot or fuel-tank armour in a 109F if fired from 100 yards and equal or less than 85 degrees angle towards the armour. In real life.

Actually, I wasn't quite right. I think the rumours began in '69, but the "clues" could be found as far back as Rubber Soul (or thereabouts). I think the first credible clues (if there ever could be such a thing) was on the Sgt. Pepper album.

Oh yeah, Revolution #9 played backwards -- "Turn me on dead man." Silly stuff!

I've played online one time. I enjoyed it, but the real attraction to that game for me was offline play. I loved the story, the characters, the resource management . . . heck, it is just a great game. Did I mention some of the coolest outer-space graphics that I have ever seen?

Ivan, good move, Man. There's not a locked thread left anywhere on the front page. They've either slid to their deaths, or you have been doing some serious deleting. Thanks for this thread. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Hi lil_labbit.

Just downloaded it the other day. I've got to print out the manuals at work first before I'll get to grips with it. My parents are over in Florida at the moment and my Dad is going to the space center. I went two years ago and was amazed at the size of the Saturn V rocket on it's side. Glad I took some photos of it.

OK, off topic Tech question, hopefully one of you guys can help out:

I used to run the Nvidia 45.23 Windows ME drivers because I got slightly better frame rates in IL2-FB... however, recently I discovered that these would not work at all with my brand new City Of Heroes, so I had to update to the most recent ones, the 56.64 drivers. But! Hnnnghh... at some point between the two, Nvidia have disabled Gamma Correction for the Overlays, so now all my movies (and games that use overlays) are way too dark again. Does anyone know how to either add code into the NVAGP file to re-enable it, or some other work around for this issue? Thanks...

arcadeace
07-13-2004, 04:54 PM
Have you tried Riva Tuner? If I remember correctly they have complete control for overlays which bypasses that in the NV properties tab.

Baron_Kiptofen
07-13-2004, 05:58 PM
I just downloaded RivaTuner, but the only settings for Overlay are Brightness, Contrast, Saturation and Hue. Fiddling with brightness via Riva does bad thinks to movies played under WinDvD (as one example), as if it's wrecked more than the Brightness setting, and even if the changes are not applied, it stays wrecked. The only way to revert it is to start the Analog Display from the Nvidia drivers, which boots back up the pre sets I already have.

A much simpler situation would be something as shown here: http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/
Modified .inf files for the drivers. However, the drivers here are all Win XP drivers, which I am told allows the Overlay gamma bar to be slid. But these use both a different named .inf and a different internal format, so I cant use them on mine, or directly cut and paste from one file .inf to another (The code to enable the gamma tab is that which deals with OVERLAY3, so I'm told) Anyone have a working solution along these lines?

Dean_Clean, you are correct, The countries have their grand tours in the month they are paired with. I was wondering if any of the cyclists would wander through here (I know there a few in the forum). A friend was in Paris during the Tour one year, but didn't get any pics. According to him, if you weren't into the race, you may have just stayed in bed. Practically everybody everywhere was tuned into the Tour. On a brighter note, I got a Domina jersey signed (ok it looks like a stamp but who cares) by big Mario himself along with a cycling cap (friend got the cap autographed @ Tour of Georgia). The jersey is being framed for a friend who is a pro cycling fanatic for her birthday. 29 & holding from what I gather http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

I have an OT questionhttp://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Regarding the links in your favorites folder, you know how for a while when you add a new link there's a little icon next to it of the associated website. After a while the icon changes to look like the rest (little windows explorer webpage logo's). How can I make the original icons stay/comeback?

cheershttp://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

Create a folder for your favorite icons. When you make a favorite with an icon you want go into C:\Documents and Settings\me\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files for WinXP and copy the icon file to the folder. Then click on the start menu/favorites for the page with the icon you want to save and click on its properties. Click change icon and brows to the folder you created with the icon copied in it. Click on that icon and it should stay.

Hey, where did your colourful avatar and sig gohttp://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-sad.gif, put them back up or atleast some new ones.

Just another question - concerning IL2 Compare.
I have only recently got the program for the first time so I don't know how to find out when it gets updated. With patch 2.4 comming out soon, there will probably be a new version of IL2 Compare. So is there any way I can find out when the next version is released. Also what is the usual timeframe for a new version after a new patch is released.

thanks in advance.

Thin Lizzy's influence on today's music is so obvious yet no one ever seems to mention it. They're one of my all-time favorite groups and Philip Lynott was a huge influence on me muscially. I used to correspond with his mother Philomena infrequently. There are plans to erect a statue of Philip in Dublin and the Irish postal service released a set of Irish riockers stamps last year which included an excellent painting of him.

BTW the "modern" Thin Lizzy (John Sykes and Scott Gorham the only original members in the line-up) are supposed to do a tour with Joe Satriani and Deep Purple sometime in the near future. I caught them about two years ago and while the spirit isn't quite the same it's a pretty good show none the less.

Yes, I agree with Thin Lizzy's influence. I only have two albums and one is still in the wrapper. Of course the one out is "Jailbreak". I've been looking for the one with any version of "Whiskey in a Jar" on it. Btw, I thought of another Brit band I like: Slade.

"Jailbreak" is actually not one of Thin Lizzy's better albums although it spawned their two biggest hits here in the US. The production on that album is horrible IMHO. Check out "Black Rose" (the utlimate Lizzy line-up with Gary Moore on guitar) and their final studio release "Thunder & Lightning" both are still available on CD.

I have nearly everything they put out with the exception of the singles and EPs, even some rare recordings (demos and alternate takes.) The prizes of my collection though are a record company inter-departmental copy of "Renegade" (only 12 ever produced and not supposed to be released to the public), some rare promotional posters and an autographed copy of "My Boy", Philomena's book about Phil.

As for the original "Whiskey In The Jar", you might be very surprised at how different the band sounded in it's early days. They didn't patent that trademark twin-harmonized-guitar sound till much later. Still it is available on numerous greatest hit compilations.

It's great that there are other Thin Lizzy fans still around, they're few and far between in my neck of the woods.

Info on Chris Columbus' bro...<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

In fact, Crist√¬≥bal Col√¬≥n -known as Christopher Columbus by English speakers- had two well-known brothers: Bartolom√© and Diego.

Bartolom√© tried to convince King Henry VII of England to make the trip beyond Atlantic, but was less lucky than his bro Crist√¬≥bal. He went to America, to La EspaŮola, to join his brother in his second trip. Later he founded Santo Domingo, now capital of Dominican Republic.

Diego was the younger one. He was governor in Santo Domingo and the city of Isabella.

All three brothers were prosecuted and returned Spain in fetters, accused of prevarication and abuse of power.

BTW, in the 15th century every cultivated man in Europe knew the Earth was round. The only reason not to make the trip is they thought it too long and dangerous. Col√¬≥n (Columbus) was convinced by Italian geographer Toscanelli that Asia was far bigger than it is really. He also knew of a Muslim geographer, Alfragano (Al-Farghani), which had calculated the perimeter of Earth in Arabian miles, but Col√¬≥n mistook them for Roman miles -somewhat smaller than Arabian ones. Therefore he thought Cypango (Japan) was nearer than it is, and when he arrived the Caribbean he thought he was in the Indic or the China Sea! (Hence the name of 'indians' given to American natives).

But all those stories of arguments about the roundness of Earth, and how Col√¬≥n did make an egg stand on a table, are nothing but tales.

Just for the curious. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

was a really cr@p show on the telly last night - I flicked over to ch 5 (in UK) and lo and behold :

"Freddie's Loves"

All about the love life of Freddie Mercury http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

Dunno why I watched it... really dont http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-sad.gif http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/52.gif

I'm not that way inclined (before anybody starts http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif) although I am a big Queen fan....

What saddens me most is that the interviews were by "friends" - seems to me they were just in it for what they could get i.e. ‚£‚£‚£ or $$$.... whatever http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-sad.gif The guy is 12 years dead...of AIDS no less... do ch5 really have to stoop this low to get the viewers in?

Granted - the people who were on, didnt have a bad thing to say about him, but his longtime friend/ex-girlfriend(!) Mary Austen wasnt interviewed, although she featured (had more sense http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif) ....

not really venting/raving, nor do I really care about Freddie Mercury's love life (how many/how often or how big his **** was) just disappointed I suppose... It cheapens his memory IMHO (if you get what I mean...) Why wait until now to drag all this up? or rather why drag it up at all?

Its completely disgusting. Here in the US so-called friends, even relatives of famous deceased individuals have profited off their lives for decades now. Talk about smear. Fortunately those who are the objects of such profit are gone and will never have to know who their friends really were. Although it seems anyone claiming to have personal knowledge can and will find an angle to profit. And it shouldn't surprise anyone what those in the media are willing to exploit, truth or lies.

It tells me more about those doing the talking than the one talked about.

What is amazing is that fame seems to be a sexual transmision disease.

How many 'famous' do you know, that are the girl who goes out with a guy who one day was photographed kissing a woman that was ex-wife of an aged man that was seen dancing with the girlfriend of a tennis teacher that had an affair with a chick who is the supposed mother of a famous singer's illegitimate son? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

Although to be fair- in his prime (85 - 86 IMHO - Live Aid/'86 Magic Tour...Live at Wembley http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif) Freddie Mercury was brilliant as an all round showman/entertainer. Sadly he will probably be remembered first and foremost as "Homosexual Queen frontman who died of AIDS" - which is true, but not how he should be remembered IMHO.

Having said that, some of the last stuff he did before he died is pretty impressive considering... Can't watch slightly mad/'days of our lives' videos - shows just how frail he is http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-sad.gif even with all the make-up..... but the voice is still there

@arcadeace - couldn't agree more.... lets face it, the one person who has the right to comment on his lifestyle is Freddie Mercury himself, which is impossible because he isn't here any more. Anyway I doubt he would do so since for all intents and purposes he was actually quite a private guy despite his "stage" persona - didn't even reveal he had AIDS until a few days before he died.... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

Its interesting info Dux. I wonder how we got Columbus out of Col√¬≥n http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Often we get conflicting answers how the natives got their name. I've heard a story similar to yours which I believe, but the most prevalent in my experience is the natives were indigenous to the land, thus "Indians".

Well, you know that Col√¬≥n's origins are not clear at all. But there's a founded tradition that says he was from Genoa, Italy, his real name being Cristoforo Colombo -as Italians do call him. From the latin columba ('dove'). http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

As for 'indians' and 'indigenous' is just the contrary way:

indigenous, from latin India (South Asia) and gens, gentes (family, origins), that is 'native of Indies'. Then it passed to name all native people, whatever their origin.

SKIDRO_79, I had to go dig in my record collection and found that I have "Renegade". The still sealed album is the second record from The Knack. Last year maybe longer VH-1 did a show on Thin Lizzy. I thought it was excellent. I wished I was home to tape it when it was on. I was on the road.

I'm not going to get into something as subjective as personal opinions about music, but I will say this concerning Philomena's book about her son...

Philip's ex-wife wound up getting everything, including the home he had purchased for his mother. Philomena was then tossed out on the street and left to find her own way. Considering this I have no problem with her writing a book that chronicles her struggles to raise Phil, his subsequent rise to stardom and eventual self-destruction. She works hard to keep her son's memory alive and I know for a fact that she spends alot of time and money in that endeavor. IMHO she is not simply trying to make a buck off her son's success.

I just read that Philip's gravestone was recently defaced and a white-supremacist organization have sworn to tear down any statues of Philip when they are put up. What a sad world we live in...

So that this is not an off topic subject, re-title it " il2 and bikers", then tell about how the sim seems to help increase situational awareness in heavy traffic. It seems to have done this for me.

And as a coincidence, I was putting the gearbox back in my 1961 650 Norton today. I had to take it apart and loctite the sleeve-gear bearing.
My father was a Matchless dealer/racer in the late fifties and early sixties so I grew up with the brit bikes and I have a number of late fifties and early sixties featherbed Nortons.

The current crop of Brando-come lately/yuppie "bikers" who throw down a wad of cash for the latest trendy bike and wannabe clothes makes me as sick to the stomach as most of the rest of late American society and culture. I stay the he11 away from them.

Mexico's attorney general gets microchip implant...

http://www.cnn.com/2004/WORLD/americas/07/13/mexico.chip.reut/index.html

I thought I'd toss this in here if anyone wants to comment. I guess its nice to believe technology will save and not enslave us.

Also, Microsoft is getting into the act. Here's a segment from the article below:

Microsoft is evaluating whether to add RFID capabilities directly to Windows, Flessner says. Within the operating system, those capabilities might be similar in concept to a device driver, the piece of code that lets a printer or other device work within the Windows environment. "The platform will be RFID enabled," Flessner says.

You know how when you make a cup of tea and put the sugar in, when you add hot water there is a little bit of foam on top (from the sugar). After you add milk and begin to stir, the milk and water swirls but the foam on top stays still despite the fact its not thick enough to hold itself together. I thought this was amazing, educational and above all, exciting.

IMHO If Edward VIII had been able to keep the throne and married wallis simpson the english royal family would odviously been different but as to the out come to the war no...
Maybe the Americans would have come to the aid of Britain sooner (wallis simpson being american). Declared war on Germany, then Japan.
Been prepared for the Pearl Harbour attack..which would have not have happened.
Meanwhile Hitler being worried about the possible threat for the US had not invaded Russia and sued for peace...

There's a very simple answer to that: The history of the war would have remained exactly the same. Why? Because the Monarch in the United Kingdom's Parliamentary system only the power of assenting to legislation, s/he cannot propose it nor pass it without prior scrutiny from the Houses. Neville Chamberlain would still have gone to Munich, and Winston Churchill would still have made his "We shall fight on the beaches" speech; neither decision had anything to do with the Reigning Monarch of their times.

--------------------------------------------
Wayno - I have referred to that book a few times on this board... Yes - you should read it. Pete Townsend writes about the people and event leading up to the RAF's hard fought defense of England in the summer of 1940. He starts with Boom Trenchards efforts to secure a separate airforce, not subject to the Royal Navy or Army - but under its own leadership and control.. The vital developement of the 'Chain Home' radar defenses and their command and control methods is also covered.

It is written by a pilot, but Townsend covers alot more ground on both sides of the conflict with materials gleaned from interviews of surviving Luftwaffe pilots as well. Dont worry - it has plenty of combat sequences too and they are very descriptive!

It is a comprehensive telling of this pivotal battle in history.

Will do, Heywooood. Btw a good one for BOB is "The Few". I don't have it in front of me but the story, pictures and all the side bars were very informative. Good read. I also have one called "Fighter" by Len ...darn can't remember his last name... anywho another good read on BOB. Think his last name is Leighton.

Very stout work - icrash... I used to be an avid cycler back in the day.. 26 miles round trip to my old high school and double that on weekends riding from Mission Hills to Del Mar...very hilly too, but it has been a long time - I prefer skating and ice hockey once or twice a week now. I have a middle aged aversion to long stints on a bicycle seat. But excercise is KEY to good quality of life later on.

Obviously you know nothing about shooting insects! It should be done with 3mm caliber rubber bands, stretched as much as you can hold, preferrably coming from its low 6. Remember to lead 3 times as much as you feel is needed. I usually get them on the first burst. Freezes them in place much better than your puny 3000 shutter!

......Rafael "Flanker" Rodrigues
From Brazil, Rafael is our general graphics artist - responsible for the terrain textures and cloud textures in Jet Thunder engine. He's also a 3d artist, being responsable for our Westland Lynx helicopter model. Also of extreme importance was his advice and information he provided on the use of SRTM files to create our terrains. In the spare time, Rafael also does 3rd party add-on aircraft for IL-2 Forgotten Battles........

I'll be following this sim now, looks interesting, some of my friends were killed on the Glamorgan ( County class Destroyer - served on the type myself) I must ask them if they intend to model one.

Yep wayno it is, i used to work on em http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif As for the penguins do you think they will model the bowling characteristics?

Let me explain, penguins have no necks as such and therefore cannot look up, so on finals to mount pleasant ( Londons third Airport http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif ) they would stand mesmorised at watching the Hercules on finals, so much so as when the Herc went over the top of them they would all try to look up and fall over backwards.......this soon developed into a sport and the Hercs would come in low and slow seeing how many they could get gathered at the end of the runway watching them and hence how many they could bowl over.. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Doom 3 is unbeleavably awsome.

I only play online multi player games.........period.
I have flown IL2 online for almost 3 yrs almost every day. But in Il2 single player I have only completed 1 mission in a I-16 I think(about 15 minutes). I don't play single player games........period. I have dozens of games, Halo, Unreal 2004, COD, NFS underground, Wolfenstein, Rainbowsix 3 ravensheild, ect, ect. Online multi play is all I like.......

Doom 3 will be the first. I went back and got the official game guide. I will play this single play..............It looks realy good. The graphics are cool. I am very impressed.

Wow, I've got something OT that shouldn't offend anyone.

Except, perhaps, Mr. Brin.

A "dutch auction" is a type of market employed by an entity that is underwriting a security.

A dutch auction causes a security's initial price to be decided by a market clearing mechanism instead of by the underwriter (risk taker)of the issue.

They are very commonly employed when a company wants to sell additional shares, usually to raise funds for a transparently reasonable purpose related to operating the business. They allow current shareholders to add to their positions such that their share of the company stays the same while using a bidding system that presents the same face to everyone: its fair.

In a dutch auction you tell the trader how many shares you want at a particular price. Everyone else does the same. When all bids are in, the clearing price for the number of shares bid for can be calculated with simple math and that's what you pay.

Think of the payoff matrix of this arrangement. If you bid too low, you get nothing, if you bid above the price at which the investment makes economic sense, you hope you'll pay less because the real investor won't be so stupid. This has the effect of skewing auction pricing to the right.

A dutch auction works well if the participants in it have a clear idea of the calculation of the NUMBER of shares they're in the market for. They're very efficient at honoring the letter and intent of the laws governing dilution of shareholders.

I've you've read this far, you know what I'm talking about and you can connect the dots.

This thread is a privilege, don't f**k it up for the rest of us, if you have issues talk to your partner or go PT. This playground is only available if we follow the guidelines laid down by CrazyIvan. He placed trust in us, don't betray it. Keep politics/religion/nationalism/WHY out of it.

C'mon guys, we all have an affinity for this Sim, lets concentrate on that. There is no need for a 'mine is bigger/better' or a 'If we didn't..' aspect. History is history.

Don't feed the animals (no disrespect meant just drawing parallels) let it die or go private.

This thread is worth more than your attempts to better each other, which you won't do 'cos this is all so impersonal. Ok so there is a record of who said what. A speck of dirt on your windscreen could turn into an enemy fighter in the time it took to look round and back again. A little smear on your goggles might hide the plane that was coming in to kill you.

Surprisingly well. You should be able to run medium settings at either 1024x768 or 800x600 with all the smoothness you could ask for. Keep in mind that medium quality still looks phenomenal and medium quality is better quality than any game out there.

LOL, sorry about my mini-outburst last night.

I'll take some pics of my rescued kittens, 3 week old feral cats found in my garage, mum presumed dead.
After bottle feeding the little blighters they are now 13 Weeks old and paying us back with their antics, nothing like the grace of a feline at play http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
Normally a dog person, have a GSD and a Belgian Shepherd, so this is a departure. Amazing how 2 big dogs can adopt kittens too, they curl up with the dogs to keep warm http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I've seem large dogs adopt kittens as well, I suspect it's because they feel a threat. It's pretty amazing what animals do sometimes. I wonder if they are really smarter than us? Heck, I feed my cats and dogs two times a day, walk the muttlies (dogs for you none Aussie speakers) brush the cats, my one daughter has a Raccoon, the other one has a hamster, and he youngest boy has a Beagle. I think we have something like 12 animals in the house and outbuildings. You made me cry buddy, and I don't do THAT very often &lt;ggg.&gt; Take good care of those cats, All the best, LongHorn

Inadaze, that picture is great. best thing I have seen for ages.

B16Enk, Can't wait to see the kittens. I've got just the one cat now after the oldest died 4 months ago with cancer in its mouth. I took the pair of them into my life after their owners died and they were both 13 and 16 years old. Pepsi lasted about a year but it was a very loving last year for her. Snuffles is still going strong and has now come out of her shell since Pepsi passed away. It must be a good life for my cat as I keep getting cats wanting to come and live with me and Snuffles. I wish that I could win the lotto so that I can open up a cat home.

Forget about last night, I think it's been sorted and we all know where each other is coming from. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Here's an amusing gift idea for the police fan in your family or circle of friends: (and just the thing to lighten up this thread) http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

The new all nude police officer calendar for 2004 comes in an all-male and an all-female version.

All pics show "almost" full frontal nudity, for both female and male versions. Just click on the menu to select which one you want to view. They are available for sale on the site -- the calendars, not the officers. Calenders are just 19.99 each.

http://www.richstevens.com/NAKED.swf

All proceeds are donated to the local charity: My Friend's Place in Los Angeles. It's a shelter for teenage runaways. The info is contained on the site.
