What this sim needs now IMO:

S T R A T E G I C M A P S

What we have now are tactical maps(and they are great!)

But there is a bit of a problem now with our tactical maps IMO, and it's this:

They're too small. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

We need a map big enough to wage or defend against strategic warfare, a map where fuel and fatigue becomes a factor.

I mean, if a bomber pilot wants to take off from England, climb through the overcast and go lay eggs on Berlin - wouldn't it be cool if he had that option?

Or if a Mustang pilot wanted to strap on those wing tanks and escort said bombers to and from the target, wouldn't it be cool if he could?

Sure, no one wants to sit in front of the computer just flying for 6 hours - just hit the (]) key a few times to speed things up a bit.

My point is simple really and it is this:

I would absolutely love one single gigantic map that stretched from SE England to just east of Berlin.

O N E G I A N T M A P

And a great big map of the Pacific would be great as well. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

Oh, and then there is the Med...

Anyway, I'm curious to see who prefers tactical or strategic maps. What are your thoughts?

EAW could be like that.

I flew escort in a P-51 for some B-17's. I started out a 0300 in NW England, had to fly to my meeting point (55 min.), then on to Germany. (1 hour 10 min. to target) After fighting off two 109 attacks on the way there I had to defend against a 190 attack on the way back. Total flying time, 4 hours, on the PC. I was tired and out of fuel on approach.
It was interesting but I only did it once. It made me appreciate what the real pilots must have gone through on a regular basis.

I agree with you there...... I once flew from London to Pantelleria in CFS.

EAW had a great map! That's what I'm talking about. It was absolutely HUGE. I would love to see a map that size in FB.

I agree--*shock*--but the super maps don't need all the little houses, otherwise the super map will make the Finland Map Load look like loading a dogfight map.

Just get rid of the details you never see from the cockpit anyway. Why is this so hard?

Where's Pantelleria and how long did it take you to get there?

They ought to consider a new map engine that only renders advanced details in tiles when you're close enough to really see them.

For ppl who enjoy re-enacting history, it sounds like a good idea. In practice, I think a small percentage would take advantage of the full (strategic) mission capability more than once or twice. Limited time, distractions and probably boredom would stack the deck against these missions. On the other hand, if we could lock ourselves in the room for eight hours, turn the temperature down to zero, pack a cold spam sandwich and clap on a clammy oxygen mask on our chapped face...not that would be..ah...fun.

Winning isn't everything;
It's the only thing!

i'd like bigger maps and esp. so that I could make decent bomber intercept and escort missions. UK wd be good if to make pre D-Day strafing missions/servers etc.

As 190 fan says, the maps are too small for strategic campaign to be modelled. the idea of a 6 hour 'flight' on a PC is initially intriguing but ultimately off putting. Thanks for the ] button!

How are people setting up bomber missions now?

You can set B-17s at the edge of the map and already at altitude at the beginning of a mission.

So then they overfly the target, lay some eggs, take some flak, endure some Focke-Wulfs, but then what?

Go land at some airbase 30 miles away?

It's true. We need a super-map. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif
