Hi Guys,

Yesterday i've asked for the specs for making models to be used on FB, and saw that there were pilots asking for this model in threads today so i've started modelling it. This is what i've got so far. Please tell me what do you think cause if it socks I'll stop modelling and keep flying /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif . Here's the pic:

Very nice work - keep goin'! IMHO, the air-intake on upper nose is a bit too large. This plane would make a nice addition for low-level dogfights.

XyZspineZyX
10-10-2003, 04:13 PM
Yeah, it looks good, but please don't skip on the polys. Use all you are allowed too.

I agree, the air intake looks a little odd, but its just because it boxy. it needs to be contoured a little.

Otherwise, keep it up!

Thank you guys!! Il fix that boxy nose /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif . Just keep in mind that this is the lower level of detail so you'll normally see it tten times smaller /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif and don't worry i like detailed models so if they gave me a top of 3500 polys I'll use 3499 /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif .

Now I don't mean to be picky but, The RAF never had any A36's?? And YES, the A36 is something diffrent then the P-51A /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif The P-51A came later.

I mean, they where an excuse for the USAAF to but their first mustangs, since there wasn't anymore money available for pursuit (fighter) aircraft.

- With no funds available for pursuit aircraft, as
- fighters were then called, Lt. Kelsey came up with a way
- to beat the system and get some additional Mustangs on
- order for the USAAC. Using some remaining funds for
- attack aircraft, Kelsey asked North American to develop
- a dive-bomber version of the NA-73. Choosing A-36, which
- was the next available attack designation, Kelsey
- ordered 500 of these dive-bomber versions on April 16,
- 1942. Ironically, the North American name, "Apache," was
- commonly used with the A-36 but never officially
- recognized by the newly renamed U.S. Army Air Forces.

Are you modeling according to specifications? 3 sided polys only? Also, don't feel to hesitant to use all the polys you can!

Yes, i got that message printed and also the materials, etc. I set mi graphic driver settings to use triangle strips, and use PolyCount in max, that allows you to set a budget and shows how many polys a selected object or many selected objects have. I'm I doing right? I'm usin OpenGl to accellerate Max, because it's faster (hide automatically not shown faces). Please assist... I would cry like a baby if all that work became useless...

Looking good!

Keep it up!!

If you wanted me to nit pick I could say: tail surfaces look a hair too large, radiator scoop is a bit too small, and the angle and slope of the razorback seems a little steep.

I am nit picky though you have captured the look and lines of the aircraft very well!

Hi Guys here's an update. An early skin i drawn in Photoshop and the alpha channel for the canopy. Its Lod 2 (half of polys that last model will have). I'm looking for painting references but no luck so i used the blueprint to draw the pannels and invented some color and add some scratches and dirt... no bump or mix maps, just a hand drawn flat skin. please tell me what do you think /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

The mesh can use a lot of optimization. The internal cockpit would does not need that many sections and you should be able to do the canopy without using Alpha's. You do have 3000 poly's to work with! Also, make sure you are counting 3 sided polygons, not 4. IL2 only uses 3 sided. You will need to cut 4 sided polygons into 3. You can read about it in the netwings forum under Modeling Specifications thread.

the world-famous icelandic uber-ace Thorsteinn Jonsson (6kills) http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif said about the A-36 :

"we recieved the american made planes and left our beloved spitfires. The A-36 was worse in every aspect except for the fact that it was a lot better for low-level ground attack - a task not suited to any spitfire"

he said he was happy about the fact that he never met a german figher in this plane http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

he flew with coastal command - and the RAF in N-africa where thay had some serious engagements with elite 109 pilots - he also claimed 5 kills that were unconfirmed - mostly Ju52s.

I agree regrding the optimization,/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif but canopy at this Lod is hard to be done by using polygons... do you think that 250 polys can do for a canopy? Here I can use a maximun amount of 1500 polys for Lod2 (and 1200 are already gone, with some tweaking I can elliminate another 50 maybe). the 3000 polys you mention are only for the Lod0... Regarding the three sided polys, I already know about that, is just that I prefer to work on polyediting (that doesn't coun triangles but faces) for modelling, and then convert the model to EditableMesh that uses (and Displays) triangles, just to keep the count of polys I,ve used. Don't worry I'read the specifications for modelling and doing my best to make the model as accurate as I can. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

If just the lower LOD's use the alpha cuts, then thats a great idea! When your zoomed out you cant see the fine edges that an alpha cut would ruin. The P-63 canopy was rather difficult do do using poly's on the LOD's. The P-38 uses half poly's (front and back) and alpha's on the side and top. So far your doing a VERY good job. Im inpressed with your speed and skill. You must have previous experance. Question, are you doing the lower LOD's first and then adding detail to them? Im just wondering why you have not shown an LOD_0 yet with full details. Typically I do LOD_0 first and then lower the details by using Vertex collapse and weld. It would be interesting to try out other methods simply because I HATE LOD's http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Hi /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif I've started from Lod3 so i could have an intermediate group of polys already uvw mapped to work with. My technique is to work on an Editable oly mesh and switch time after time to Editable mesh just to check out the polycount. I was thinking on using Alpha for canopy 'till Lod2, and then use polys for Lod1 and Lod0. Idont like using vertex collapse becuse it creates a lot of undesired edges that deform the mesh weird... i prefer cut and weld them by hand /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif .

Hi guys, I'm very happy that you liked the model. I wish to thanks to those of you that provided such good reference material (pictures, descriptions, historical background, etc.) I'm counting on making the cockpit also as well as the rest of the family (p51 A, AI , AII, etc.) but I'll wait 'till my first model passes (or not) the game's developers judgement /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif .

Otherwise you can try post to Oleg's attention in the ready room hoping he'd reply.

In Italy, with the 27th and 86th FBGs, the A-36 flew over 1000 sorties in 35 days. With the 311th FBG in India included, the A-36s flew 23,373 sorties, dropped 8000t of bombs, claimed 84 EA in the air and 17 on the ground for the loss of 177 to ALL causes.

The carb intake on top of the cowling should extend back almost to the last exhast stack. This would also help to flatten out the the arched cowling, which looks sort of odd.

Well after some re-shaping requests from guys at NetWings, here's the final model LOD_0 with Basic Texturing. Body has been snelled, spine courve slightly modified, airbrakes positon has been corrected as well as carb. intake lenght-courve rapport, and bottom intake has been slightly bulged. Also radio wire was attached slower than in earlier versions. I'm working on other lods right now /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif . Tell me what do you think about it!!

well... I use 3dStudio Max 5 (the only format accepted by Maddox, no Gmax, no Truespace, etc, DXF, or DWG) you can find lots of tuts on the Web, just type "3ds Max Tutorials" on Google and you'll see /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif . It's almost 5 years now I'm in modelling (most high poly stuff) it's not an "easy learning app" but it's not impossible neither... so if you have a good system and get the software i'll be gladd to lend you a hand.

Hey, I want the B.534, too. A modern monoplane-looking fighter, but biplane... and it was quite impressive for a biplane. There were two main types during WW2, the open pit B.534-III and the closed one B.534-IV. There was also a cannon version, I think, the Bk.534, but I could be wrong, because I read about this a lot ago.

They were seized by Luftwaffe, and many used by the Axis-napped Slovak Air Force. Finally, they were used by insurgent forces.

Mmmm, interesting scenario...

nice to see that im not the only one that knows this beautyful biplane. the bk.534 was to be built with an engine mounted 20mm cannon, but due to technical problems the planned 20mm cannon was replaced by a 7.9mm mg. so it was weaker armed than its precessors.

the only thing that was bugging me when i heard about the new planes being made and included in fb was, that they dont suit the name FORGOTTEN battles. i mean... even people that dont when the 2nd WW started know the Mustang, Spitfire and so on. and the Bf109 Z or Go229 we're gonna get are just ridiculous. if oleg wants to include odd aircraft, why not the do335, which was really used in combat.

but the majority of the people want these aircrafts, and so i think ill just be happy to have some more planes to fly and shoot down
