Yes, that's right, I have decided to start an arguement.

So, who do all you think would win?

Assume equal years! Assume equal pilots!

I'd have to go for the difference in pilot QUALITY. why? well, I've read something on here about a thunderbolt beating a spit.

I'm a crappy pilot, but one hell of a shot.

I'd say the Spit takes it...

The only point where the Mustang outclasses the Spit is range...

Actually, that one would be ratehr up for grabs. While the F.22 Spitfire was a tremendous aircraft, the P-51A is one of the fastest low level aircraft of the war. If the Spitfire pilot could keep the fight high, he'd likely win, but if the P-51A pilot kept it on the deck, he'd have a decided advantage.

Sort of like a dogfight a couple of Guards pilots got into several years back. I am told a pilot in a brand new F-15 spotted a Guard's F-105 Thunderchief down low, and decided to have some fun, and bounce it. The 105 spotted him coming in, and hit the deck, and was gone. The F-15 never caught him.

In a dogfight a late mark Spit would take it. Out climb, out turn, dive faster without the wings falling off. Plus nasty cannons in the wings.

The Mustang had range..but that was the only area it was 'better' than the Spit as a pure fighter. As a long range escort though, it was the best.

And dont get me started on the crappy german planes the pilots would bail out as soon as he seen it was a spitfire on his tail /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

That's a tough one, there are many variables.

The Mustang can carry more Beer than the Spit. This is counteracted by the lesser quality of American Beer.
The Brits OTOH do odd stuff to their Beer. They serve it 'warm'. However at 30,000ft, under a Spit It'll chill nicely.
Interestingly, the Americans managed to put enough tankage on a Spit to get it across the Atlantic. So we may have to assume that these same fellows were able to overcome the Spit's lack of Beer carrying potential too. The only problem being of course it would be American Beer again.

A tough one indeed.

The ground would win. The P-51 may hammer the Spit or the other way around but if not for the ground they'd just spin round with no wing and stuff.

Christ, it would've made more sense if I had put something about world peace in there.

Hiya all,

That bit about beer wasn't as much of a joke as some might think. Spitfires were, on occasion, used to ferry beer to the boys at the front during the Normandy campaign.

If memory serves me correctly, the Spits used were Mk IXs and they carried a keg under each wing! Or something like that...

You know at first I was going to say spit all the way. Then I thought about it a bit and I can easily see the stang winning. Under the right circumstances of course.

If the fight starts high enough the stang can leave any time it wants. Just dive and you're out of there. Then come back later or don't if you don't feel like it.

Speed is everything. As is the ability to get out of bad situations.

Both super planes though.

Meh so mebbe the spit wins if they both just stumble upon each other. Stang if he can dictate. Better pilot wins in either ride imo.

Great planes. Man I hope they are in game soon.

If I were flying the Mustang, I would loiter above the Spitfire till it ran low on gas.

Then I would nail him as he is trying to land.

Better yet, I'd let him land and repeatedly vulch him and his thirsty friends.

quit with the crappy that plane would come in and take them both but a late war p51 against a grffin engine spit the p51 wouldnt stand a chance the spit would be far more manoverable and its got heavier weapons but if it was against a spit and a p-47 they its different they spit is obviously more manoverable but with the right tactics the p47 could stay on his tail and if it had the paddle blade properllers it would massive outclimb it this is based on a book written by robert johnson when he had mock dogfight with a spit before and after havein this new prop fitted to his d-10

Don't believe everything you read in Thunderbolt!

Certainly keep in mind that Martin Caidin ghost wrote that biography.

Just look at the basic stats for the P-47D-10 and contemporary Spitfires, you'll see that the story just does not add up.

If the two had different energy states, sure, but that isn't what the story conveys, or at least how you understood it judging by what you wrote.

Not even Skychip could make that one (s)tick!

as for Eagle_361st's comment about the p-47 dont make me laugh mate. (joke)

Anyway the ultimate fighter, the HAWKER TYPHOON would scream in at low level, and make a meal out of the diving p-47 and then have the spitfire and mustang for dessert.

Yep Panther they did use the Spit to ferry beer. Seen photos of it somwhere. A beer keg slung under each wing. The RAF definitely had it's priorities right!

Versus the P51B, the Spitfire XIV will be about
10mph faster over about 22,000 ft, but the P51B's
is faster in a dive.

So basically above 22,000 feet, the P51 can break
the combat by diving, but once it has, if the Spitfire
remains at altitude, then it might be impossible
for the P51 to engage. If the combat starts at a high
speed at level then the Spitfire can choose to
disengage by using faster level speed at that altitude.
The Spitfire XIV can also choose to disengage using
sustained climb, which puts it in a better position
to reengage should it choose.

In conclusion either can disengage, by different means,
but having disengaged, it is harder for a P51B to
reengage, unless the Spitfire XIV pilot makes a mistake.
I don't know if it would be possible for the P51B to
dive and then zoom climb to rengage, though. Anyone
any ideas on that?

This kind of fight did happen a few times:
Israeli F-51D Mustangs against Egyptian Spitfire Mk.IX.
Neither side scored kills. All IAF victories of 1948 were claimed by 109s (S-199) or Spitfires. The Mustangs shot down a civilian Airliner and claimed a Macchi 205, which got away damaged.
In return, egyptian Macchis claimed a Mustang, which also got away damaged

I'll second the notion of "planes don't kill planes, it's in the pilots hands" I think you guys and your plane vs plane stuff is beyond silly.

Chlywly, I'll drop a plane off the empire state building onto the pilot/pedestrian who keeps spouting that worn out cliche. Sure it's TRUE! But it's still boring as hell to have it quoted a million times, expecially after specifing equal pilots in the opening post.

Who would win - is irrelevant - I would just feel embarrassed flying around a plane that looks like a pregnant guppy

I love the P 51 , in fact is the plane i love the most from WWII but the Spit is superiour in almost everything and will kill the P51 with ease with equal pilots .
The Spitfire is a wonderfull machine with predator guns .
