View Full Version : Possible solution to the Lifeboat issue...

What if the development team just stuck a lifeboat with men on the water by the sinking or damaged ship when the user (us) were not looking at the ship? In other words, the lifeboat would always appear behind the ship out of the sight of the user(us)...this way it would be as if the men had gotten in the lifeboats out of our sights...so that the programer needs only to program a lifeboat on the water with a few people. thus, there is no need to program the men on the sinking ship running to the lifeboat and lowering it down...etc. Just program a lifeboat with a few men that pops up in a place that is out of the sight of the user (meaning us, not the AI) at a given poin in time.

What do you all think about this idea?

The DevTeam has made their final decision on this matter it seems. The idea is not a bad one at that, but 'asking' the DevTeam won't work anymore. It's now going to up to 'us', the users, to accomplish this.

So opening new threads about the subject will just 'spread out' the ideas and suggestions of our favorite item. Please re-post this into the 'LifeBoat POLL' thread to help keep all like items together.

But Gerd, but, but, but...in that case, how do you know they don't already have one small lifeboat full of people, positioned so you can never see it?

Oh, well, back to the holodeck..... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/88.gif

What would be the point of writing code, making models and using CPUtime and memory on something the player will never see?
If we can't see it and it and we can't interact with eachother then it practically doesn't exist.
Which means that it is only a waste of resources.

And saving the virtual lives of bits and bytes is just silly.

And Steve is right, who knows what goes on out of sight?
I bet they have made a fully animated crew that you can interact with but programmed them to stay behind your back.

i thought the dev team found it to be a moral issue. like adding dead bodies floating in the water and such? itd be interesting, but i think my u-boat would get sunk by a patrol plane while i was trying to help survivors or the u-boat would get over crowded with the survivors. i wouldnt be the guy gunning them down, i dont have the heart, even if they are just graphics. itd be like shooting at pilots whove parashuted out of their planes. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

If it's not seen, it's not rendered. Any part of an 'object' that is 'hidden' is not displayed. How long to model 1 or 2 different sizes of generic types. As to the code(AI), ??
Do you 'see' that debris in the water next to the ship while it's sinking? One or two of those are instead lifeboats. No waste of resources. The only thing that changed was the 'skin'. DEFINITELY a mod to be made there!

What he suggested solved 2 problems that had been suggested. The first was to have a 'fully animated' deployment. The second was one having them 'appear'. What he said made 'sense' to me. Definitely should have been a little bit more clearly stated though.

Nice idea but if you see a life boat, you probaly blow it out of the water anyway.
If I remember it correctly Hitler had ordered that picking up survivors isn't a possibility since the Liberator attack on a U-boat that rescued some survivors in '44.(I think it was in '44)

I think is a good idea. If I had to run away from a ship under atack, I would try to use the ship as cover. It makes sense.

To convert debris into lifeboats is just another good idea.

All you you guys that replied to this post missed the point!! Come on folks, read my original post again and THINK!...to clear things up, the lifeboat is to pop(I mean pop) out of the users(us) view to make up for how it got there...get it??...So that when the Kapitan of the U-boat sees the lifeboat he will not see a lifeboat just poping up outta thin air. I hope someone can figure out what I'm saying.

We now have 3, yes 3 threads on the subject of Lifeboats.

This one right here,

plus:
http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums?a=tpc&s=400102&f=857101043&m=305004617

plus:
http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums?a=tpc&s=400102&f=857101043&m=102109705

including a Poll that had 181 votes giving 84% of this community that wanted Lifeboats of some description.

It is nice to see that the interest is still very much alive ang kicking.
Furthermore it has to be said that it has been the most controversial subject ever to hit this forum.

A new angle from myself that I posted on the "official" thread stated that its only a game and no-one in the real world would give a S*** if they were to learn that a U-Boat game included Lifeboats that some people MAY shoot at.
The Majority of Flight Sims have parachutists that are regularly shot up in the silk but this has noth detered the game developers of these flight sims from including them.

After all its just a game, not real and as I have said it wont make the 9 o clock news.

Would I shoot up lifeboats..NO I wouldnt as it would not be historically accurate to do so let alone my own conscience of doing the dastardly deed.

The controversy continues.

@ Hauitsme:

I WAS RIGHT?! Wow! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif First time for everything!

@RedTerex:

I guess you're right. I mean it's not as though shooting people in liefboats is the worst form of violence, its a quick and easy death right?. I mean look at Manhunt. You went about with a chainsaw on a bloody escapade. Let's compare the two for a moment shall we? Gun ... Chainsaw ... Gun ... Chainsaw.

But the dev teams word is final. Gerd, the reason they won't include lifeboats is not becuase of the performance issues, but becasue of the moral issues (not many I know [grumble]) It is their belief that violence should not be condoned (but sinking tankers isn't violence?!)

But let's look on the bright side. Someone (like Red http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif) is going to come along and make a mod which puts lifeboats in. Thankyou in advamce Red http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/11.gif http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Maybe I should take my own advise!! I noticed that it wasn't clear after it was posted, but had to leave. Should have fixed it then, but will TRY now. Here it goes.

What he suggested solved 2 problems that had been suggested previously on another thread. The first was to have a 'fully animated' deployment. Eye-candy, 'realistic', and would use the DevTeams precious resources. Sounds like a great 'mod' to me.
The second was one having them magically 'appear' out of thin air. NOT 'realistic'. ATTENTION TREKKIES. This mod's for you!

As to the statements about shooting survivors. Speak for yourself. Speak truthfully. Don't assume. Don't lump everyone into a pile(all Muslims are terrorists, everyone will shoot the LB's/survivors, etc).

@ Gerd_Schopfel: You're right, I did misunderstand. You meant have the lifeboats spawn out of sight and then drift into view, And I thought you meant stay out of sight forever! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/35.gif

Doing it that way seems to be a fine idea, but I would be just as happy if they just come floating out of the sinking ship along with the rest of the debris. I still think a 'non-existent, non-shootable' lifeboat is the way to go, one that will simply cease to exist once you are far enough away.

thank you hauitsme, but i think i was speaking for myself, "i" in my post means "me" or "myself". "you" can do anything "you" want to do. i think "i" spoke truthfully. "i" also didnt "lump" everyone into a pile, i think my post would have read more like "i wont shoot people in life boats but everyone else will". i only spoke for "myself", but why have life boats filled with sailors for? you dont want me to "assume" anything, so ill ask you what would "you" do if you where a u-boat captain and "you" saw men in life boats?
if you want life boats in the game then maybe the dev team should make it so that if you where "satan of the sea" and went around killing helpless men in life boats your crew might begin to loose repect for you, and if you helped men in life boats your men might respect you more for having compassion even in the hardships of war.

Geez, wasn't that a mouthfull!? Where to begin? In no particular order. Here goes.

Read the posts (all of them) in the LifeBoat POLL. My answers/responses are there. If you have any questions/remarks about anyone's(mine included), ask them/me to clarify.

"satan of the sea" -- I've heard of 'Chicken Of The Sea' before. Refer to the above answer.

'"i" also didnt "lump" everyone into a pile' -- The remark I made was to everyone. That means EVERYONE. You. Me. Everyone. Way too many are doing it. Did I say 'Fenrir383, don't lump everyone into a pile'. If I am going to single out a specific person, THEY'LL KNOW IT! Otherwise, it's just a generic statement meant to include others. If you take it personally, that is your problem. Not mine.

Actually there was someone 'lumping' AGAIN(at least that is how I saw it). The 8th post on the first page. "... but if you see a life boat, you probaly blow it out of the water anyway." WHY DO PEOPLE DO THIS?

About the 'all Muslims are terrorists' taken from another post, it was. Sometimes I can't explain myself clearly, so it was there as a second example to help clarify.
