The Flettner 282 existed and took part in the Mediterranean region, Aegean sea, and Baltic sea. Can we have it please? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

The Flettner 282 took part in WWII, whereas the ah-64 apache did not, so there is a clear distinction http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif.
Nice idea Prof.Wizard , that'd sure be alot of fun, but I doubt we will get it.

I'm not suggesting a flying helicopters immediately, but an AI model would be extremely cool. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I agree, it would be cool as AI

Oleg has stated, as well as Luthier, that IL-2 can only support helicopters as AI with very very extensive programming that they're not willing to do. The programming involved would be too stressfull. Helicopters require a different vector of thrust, and a different control system. There are other helicopter sims, I don't think it would be wise to put all this stress on Oleg, no matter how cool it would be. The sim could never handle a system for a flyable helicopter. We shall just have to admire it from afar...

Hmm, however, I don't believe such work will go wasted. The flying model of helicopters is more or less the same for the 40s as it is for the 90s, meaning that Oleg's team might use the experience/code for a future pure helis' sim.

I thinks it's a good investement. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

This bi-rotor craft was in combat, the enemy planes was unable to shot it down due of the little size and its agility.

the AAA we have in the game in the moment would make a mess of that thing in a instant http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/icon_twisted.gif

Right... IF used in offensive missions. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif
I doubt anyone (even the AI, lol) will want to go with a Flettner over enemy territory.

james8325, thank you for that picture I've had it almost forgotten. Truth to be said though, that's not a helicopter strictly speaking, but an autogyro. Thus more easily implemented and matching the plane flying models.

seems to me there are far too many more deserving projects. and the whole helicopter thing would take far too much effort compared to any new plane.

Well...once again, we could do this...

Just as it would be incredably simple to create a playable tank, createing an AI-only helicopter would be simple:

Take the Gladiator or I-153 flight model or something similar, and slow it waaay down with much increased lift and a low stall speed.

Then, when the AI flew it, we would have a convinceing enough representation of a slow moveing helicopter in foward flight.

Honestly, would a fighter pilot moveing at 400km/h notice if his target chopper moveing at 25-35 km/h moved a little funny?

I have a nack for spotting the flaws, rather than the cool things in games.
