The IL-2?

Why is it no one seems to fly this plane? I mean, there's more of them than just about anything. Is it just not a popular online plane? I did see one once on HL. Maybe you see them more in FB online?

You may not see it in DF's much, but they're common enough in Coops.

I haven't been online in a while but I used to fly them alot even on DF servers. I'd go and bomb the enemy airfields and strafe their aircraft. I also like to take out their AA batteries.
Very fun, even though I would get shot down 8 out of 10 times. It takes the monotony out of flying a fighter all the time and it sure can take a beating and still be able to fly back home! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

It's also alot of fun to dogfight in. Particularly if the bad guys are willing to turn with you.

I see a fair number of IL2's on my DF maps but I usually run scripted servers with lots of tanks and such. In a regular DF server I don't see many, but the IL2 isn't a very good fighter /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif .

At the start of WW2 the German army lacked experienced anti-aircraft gunners. The average gunner was so bad that the USSR decided to help them out. They did it by forcing some of their pilots to fly I-153 flak magnets. These planes were slow but very sturdy. This allowed German anti-aircraft gunners to get a large amount of target practice on a relatively small number of planes. Thanks to the Soviets help, by the end of the war the German anti-aircraft gunners were amoung the best in the world.

You know, that's another thing I've been meaning to ask. On a DF server, is it typically ok to go after their airfield defenses?

As I mentioned in another thread, it's my opinion that if it's not a hack or cheat and it's in the game, it's legit. So use it to your advantage. But, if you make your first few runs for going after their airfield and taking all their AA out, do you often hear a lot of whining?

no it's fair enough, esp. given that they respawn after a while /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

I use it alot cause it helps out when in a DF someone is chasing you and you got your tail gunner to take them out a bit.

Depends on the objectives. The P-47 can usually do the same job and still retain good speed and climb, but the IL2 has 23mm cannons and laser machine guns. Oh, and ptabs!

If my LAN worked properly, I would be flying it online! Now I just fly it in single player.

Couldn't sleep last week, WTH, went to HP at 3:30AM, and joined either a Japanese or Taiwanese game (guessing based on players names and talk) it was IL2 ONLY
Sucked at first, but stayed and it was interesting, sword fighting dinosaurs is what it felt like. I'd DF again in a lower ping IL2 pure server.

Friggin' rockets were just flying EVERYWHERE!
