Something that you can fly alone (no wingmen) into a furball and still have a chance of decimating everybody else?

Excluding jets the La-7 and Ki-84 are your best bet. Definitely stay away from the P-51, P-47, and FW-190 if you plan to mix it up.

I almost never have a wingman online to look out for me, but I think the D9 is one of the safest planes in the game.

It's speed allows you to generally pick the time and place of your attack, in a tough spot you can work it's advantages to gain seperation speed and/or altitude and it's generally a pretty durable fighter.

As Hunde says, I wouldn't dive it into a furball all alone, but in most other circumstances the D9 is a great plane because it is fast and allows you to choose when you want to engage.

How about early in Barbarossa ? If high top speed is a factor, does that mean the MiG-3 is a good lone ranger plane in 1940-42 missions ? What makes the Pony, Jug, and 190 not good LR planes ?

Zen, you are right the 190D is also a good plane due to it speed, climb and improved maneuverability over the 190A.

Capt., the P-51, P-47, and FW-190A are not good lone ranger planes or planes to dive into a furball and mix it up because generally you will be out-turned, out-climbed, and out e'd by your opponents. However these planes are some of the best planes when used in pairs or more because they have good speed, good dive limit, good high speed handling, good stability, and good firepower. 1 vs. 1 or in furballs these planes are not the best, used in tandem with sound tactics makes these planes VERY effective.

P39 - if you know how to make it go. Otherwise the ki and la - although if it's a real furball the spit is nice too - just don't try to run.

The Bf-109Z, just find a large furball and zoom in spraying mk108 rounds all over the area. Guaranteed that you'll get five or more enemy kills and a couple friendly kills when you egress from the fight on the other side.

Most of the jets can basically fly solo.
I mean if you wanna be ghey and fly a jet. j/k

I like the P-39, P-63 and the Zero.
That's just my personal preference.

I think speed is a good quality for a "lone ranger" fighter. The D-9, La-7 and P-63 comes to mind, simply because they are faster than most planes. The D-9 is probabably the best as it stays fast even at the higher altitudes. @5000m the only plane that will catch a '44 D-9 is a K-4.

When it comes to aircombat, I'd rather be lucky than good any day!
