View Full Version : USB Headset - Your Opinions Please

I'm thinking of buying a Plantronics DSP-500 USB headset with boom mic. (see pic below) I'd like to get opinions from anyone who has used this type of headset. Does the fact that it acts like a second sound card present any problems in IL-2, or XP for that matter? Can I use it to listen to both game sounds and comms at the same time? Can I also separate game sounds and comms to speakers and headset, respectively?

Any thoughts?

Thanks

I have had problems with this set in IL2FB.

It seems to interfere with some of my USB flight gear, and it also has poor 'crossover' characteristics when an object's sound moves from one stereo channel to another.

All the best, Don

Hi Phalcon,

I'm sure you remember this previous thread (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums?q=Y&a=tpc&s=400102&f=23110283&m=122108692&p=1) that you started on the topic; there's the link for you. You can certainly read some user reviews on places like Amazon, Newegg and so on. I was considering this set and recall reading lots of good reviews, and from that other thread there are several folks here who will testify that they're good. I think part of my decision to go with Sennheiser was largely due to their reputation plus the fact that I didn't want USB phones.

Bearcat and OldCanuck seem not to have any problems separating game sounds and comms with these, and they can probably tell you more about possible conflicts.

Cheers,
Mike

Too bad USB doesnt run off the sound card. I prefer USB headphones to the plug-in ones.
My sound chip onboard isnt up the to the task and it affected game play.
Abit BH-7 board. It would be slick to route them to the sound card for sure, otherwise the use of those kind of headsets will depend on what your mobo is, no?

USB headphones are great.I have no conflicts at all with them. I use MSFFB2/X45/CHpedals/TIR/USBheadset all at once with no hiccups or problems in any device. My mobo has 6 USB ports... maybe thats why.. I dont use a HUB. The USB device will be recognozed as a seperate sound source. When I go to my sounds menu I see the headset and my N sounstorm.... I justset the default sound to soundstorm.. then in Ventrillo,SN,or TS I set the input and output to my headset. I have heard that the plantronics though supposedly better dont work as well. That is why i went Logitech and I had no problems.
