Do NOT buy CFS2. It's total crap compared to FB, or the original IL-2 for that matter.

If you're looking for advice about CFS you've come to the wrong place.
I myself have never played it, though from what I've heard FB is much better. Anyway, don't expect to hear anything different here...

LOL

No, I haven't lost my mind, yet. But I'm sure it will hapen if I have to wait for AEP much longer!

CFS2 is a much simpler game than Il-2. Both graphics and especially physics are way behind Il-2.

Campaign sucks completely.

On the plus side is that it was probably the first WWII sim that looked nicely, I still think that Corsair in CFS2 looks pretty. That's all I can say, other may or may not agree with me!

When first released, CFS2 was a great combat sim. The open code (or unfinished product) allowed 3rd party creations of a/c, missions and campaigns that were all free. But with the arrival of Il-2, the CFS series was finished. I agree with most sim pilots that there is no comparison. Even CFS3 doesn't come close to Il-2. Save your money and get the AEP.

Depends on how cheap you saw it. In my local store, it's about 1/3 the price of FB. If you're prepared to download and install a lot of third party planes (avhistory are very good) and want to fly them online or LAN, then it could give you your money's worth.

Save your money Highalt. CFS2 was a good game when it first hit the stores 4 years ago, and it was fun to play, but it was quickly overshadowed by the introduction of IL2. Its one saving grace was that it was about the war in the Pacific between the Japanese and Americans. It was popular because no one else at the time was producing a flight sim involving this theater of operations, and sadly haven't since. In the campaigns you only flew the Zero, Wildcat, Hellcat, and Corsair. You could fly a few more planes in QM.

If I'm not mistaken, I've read on this forum that Oleg is working on a Pacific theater add-on anyway, so I'd wait until that comes out instead of buying CFS2. We've already gotten some Japanese planes, and I'm sure it is just a matter of time before we get more. I think there are also some Pacific missions and campaigns you could download right now too.

Bottom line, be patient and save your money. Cheers http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

CFS2 is a good place for a sim rookie to start out, its cost is low, and the planes are very easy to fly when compared to FB. CFS2 does have its downfalls though, anyone can become a 3rd party modeler of that sim, meaning there are alot and I do mean alot of outright cheaters in that sim. They change flight characteristics, damage models, etc.. and they can get past every restriction that game has that is suppose to stop those "MODS". You will also see fom time to time star wars tie fighters and other things as you there as anyone can bring in anything. The game just got ruined in short.

FB on the other hand is tougher to fly than CFS2. It compared to other sims is the most realistic WW2 flight sim on the market hands down. You will see some gripes in the forums about roll rates and flight characteristics, but those are just peoples feedback to the makers. We are very fortunate so far not to have a bunch of 3rd parties able to make planes via the open code as CFS2 does. For the most part the planes we get from the makers are very well done.
Many of the simmers here came from the old cfs platform and brought our squad with us, as we were tired of that arcade cfs has.
I guess you could say it all very shortly.
If you like arcade style go to cfs, if you like as close to real get FB.

Hi,

I have had cfs2 and cfs3.

cfs2 was good in that time but compared with
il2fb its nothing.

I played cfs3 once after that i gave it away.

Last week i read that cfs4 is coming in september.

I don`t buy it. I will stay with il2fb at all costs.

WANNA PLAY ARCADE, GO CSF http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I briefly flew the CSF and couldn't help noticing the similarity between it and the last ever nonsim game i played, Star Wars by Lucas. The feeling was sitting in a small globe about the size of my body trying to swing the gun this or the other way. No way, i trashed it as i had exceeded the return deadline http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I recommend EAW over CFS series.

I bought CFS3 while I was waiting for the Gold Pack to come out. Being the kinda person to have an open mind about things and always looking to expand my game "collection" I figured at the very least maybe it would have some good training missions. I'm new to the flight sim scene, having been brought here from someone yelling at me in BF1942 DC calling me a plane camper and I should just go play a flight sim.. (What a great idea! I thought) Blah blah anyway.. I think some of the planes are definitely very cool (That Vampire is wicked cool) and I like the abundance of ground targets in the quickmatch mode...however the menus crawl for some reason. My machine runs IL-2 with graphics maxed at 1600x1200 but can't even navigate the memu system without choking in CFS3...?! Something definitely wrong with that game. Its a shame really, it had a lot of potential.

CFS2 covers the Pacific and includes the Corsair and Grummans. It has a good mission builder and bad campaigns. Like an old car, it's fun to remember.

IMO, Janes WWII, EAW and CFS2 were built for a different computer generation -- good for their period.

But if you've flown FB, you'll be very disappointed at the flight models, the graphics and the cartoon-like screens. Spend your money on Battle over Europe instead.

P.S. CFS3, on the other hand, is a bad joke...an embarrassing misuse of resources. Avoid it at all costs. Or, if you must have a copy, let me know...

I have CFS1,2 & 3, Warbirds FA, FA3.6,..... the CFS series were good in thier day...all except CFS3..it was never good IMO.. But all the sims I mentioned above are just games compared to IL2...even more so when stacked up against FB. Suck it up and wait for your AEP man. Enjoy FB as it is now. There is NOTHING to compare to FB...and flying anything else..unless you have an online crew you are hooking up with for old times sake or Ss & Gs....is a waste of time and money. Youd be better off taking the money you would spend on CFS2 and getting a case fan or something...anything to make your current rig run FB better. Put that money towards an X45..... a seat cussion....ANYTHING... but DO NOT give MS your or your parents (if applicable) hard earned money for ANY flight sim product with the exception of FS2004. And that is only because the commercial thing can be rewarding too and there is a huge fololowing and community for it...if thats your thing. Me..?? I like the Warbirds..and for warbirds...NOTHING even comes close to FB. IL2 is a distant second IMO, a classic in IT'S day but one whosae time in the sun has passed.

Agree with most of the above comments. CFS2 was fun in its day, but it is much more of an arcade game than a proper combat sim and anyone used to IL-2, let alone FB, will find it dissatisfying. Still looks pretty though, even to this day, and it does have those Pacific area planes. But a Pacific game with the FB engine will clean its clock - and one is in the works. Avoid CFS3 at all costs unless you are feeling masochistic.

Hilarious. It will be very interesting to see what M$ strategy is to regain consumer confidence if CFS4 is a reality. From the amount of CFS3 packages still on the shelves I would guess there's a growing base of would-be flight simmers who are shaking their heads. Never again. I haven't even had the confidence to buy FS2004 after the CFS3 debacle.

CFS2?

Strange - considering M$ probably has more $ to spend on sim developement than any other group - but from the vomit-inducing, mawkishly sentimental intro, thro' the poor graphics and FM's, and into the beer coaster it became took less than an hour for me. CFS4? Ha ha ha! They must be joking!!

There is nothing "wrong" with CFS2. The flight models aren't as realistic feeling, and it is an old title now.

But it isn't an awful sim. (It was considered a sim when it was released, you know. Just because some folks don't like it doesn't mean it's an arcade game)

Not many PC games, let alone simulations, stand the test of time. CFS2 is not an exception to this rule. The graphics are fair, the landscape is pretty good, and you can land on aircraft carriers, which isn't easy, especially if you do it the way real carrier pilots did it.

It's not as good as Il*2, or FB, or FB with the AEP. But why would you expect an old title like CFS2 to be as good as the latest update of FB, anyway?

I agree with you, Chuck_Older. CFS2 was a great sim when we had nothing better to compare it to. It's still installed on my old computer and I don't have the heart to uninstall it yet. Still fire it up from to time to time to shoot a few carrier landings in virtual cockpit mode. Couldn't do that before FB but somehow FB has has raised the skill level and makes the old CFS2 seem a lot easier.

CFS2 is a classic. I bought it when it hit the shelves and played it well after owning Il2. If anyone is serious the downloads are a must, and there's a ton of them.

It helped establish the flight sim community and its open source made it a great creative pass-time. Not so great for onliner's but there weren't too many then.

It doesn't compare to FB and with the additions coming for the Pacific it probably would not be used.

I remember a couple of nice BF110's that someone made for CFS2,with lots of weapons.I flew those quite a bit. Also a sweet HE111.
But FB/Aces is the only combat sim I play now.Everthing else just isnt near as fun.
