S! all,

Help needed & as you can figure I´m about to buy a new stick. My Sidewinder is falling apart after 1 year of intense IL2/FB air combat. So what have you got? What are the pros/cons? A link to some pics would be cool - I´d really appreciate it.

Oh BTW - prize: up to $150 (USD) maximum.

Thx in advance

Saitek X45 HOTAS - $79.99USD

IMO, great programability, precise controls and easy install. I used Sidewinders, Precision Pros and Wingmans. This stick is by far the best I've used. There are better HOTAS', but this one was in my price range and is quite comparable to the higher-priced ones.

Do you want ForceFeedback or not?

If you do, your choices are limited.

I just got the new generation MS Sidewinder 2 FF with the red buttons.

The FF is great and the variety of forces is impressive.

Following the recommendation of some people of the forum I buyed a X45 HOTAS and I must say Im very happy with it now, I had some trouble getting used to it but in a copule of days I started to feel very comfortable with it, it has very powerful and easy programability and works without problem under WINXP, you will not find a better HOTAS sistem for that price.

I was considering of replacing this stick:
http://www.logitech.com/lang/images/0/911.gif

to my old microsoft precision pro2
and I was wondering if it's any good (just worried about that throttle, looks a bit fragile and tiny)?

The throttle is metal and glides smoothly it's tough and durable.

Look at products from

Microsoft
Saitek
Thrustmaster
CH Products

Spend not less than US$30 and as much as you can afford and buy the stick that feels good to you and has the most features you can afford and want.

Mons I have and use both the Saitek and the MSFFB2 stick together to make one FFB HOTAS setup. Right now the MSFFB2 can be had at Best Buy for $79 US...great stick solid feel, sturdy base..I have had mine for almost two years with no problems and I have used it everyday except for a total of about 3 wks whan I went to Disney last summer and NY to visit the in laws. You can get an X45 for $39 reconditioned. Anoher great stick. Why two you ask? For the ultimate HOTAS setup for the phenominal price of only $118 US. The X45 is normally a $79 stick. The MS stick normally goes for $100. By using the two sticks together , with the programmability options available to you, you will be able to map just about every concievable function to your stick set up and elimenate the keyboard from your flying all together for the most part. I wont post the link to the X45 sinc e Air Malik has done so already. Since you are looking at spending up to $150..Id suggest trying that set up. Ultimately like Tully said its a matter of prefference. If you have large hands then it may be a good set up for you. I only use the Saitek stick as a button bay. My flight controls prop pitch, weps and some views and some engine commands are on the MS stick, I have some engine commands, views and trim tabs on the X45 throttle, other functions like engine start, bail out, all lights a,d gear functions are on the X45 stick. The only features in my setup I dont use are the X45 X & Y axii and the twist rudder on the MS stick. Since i have pedals I have mapped my rudde trim to X45 rudder rocker although, if I had no pedals I would probably put the rudders on the X45 rudder control and map rudder trim to the MS twist handle.

Thx for the info guys - you´ve been a great help. I think the Saitek will be my choice. Another thing: Force feedback
is it any help or is it just for fun - I mean does it have any influence on the way you play the game - spin/stall warning etc.?

FFB is great. You can feel a stall coming. You can feel someone shooting at you...depending on what they are hitting you with. You can actually fee the difference between an IL2, a Jug, a La-5 and say a HE-111. They all FEEL different because of the FFB. Thatsw hy i suggested you get the MS stick on sale if you can. You cant beat the price for that kind of setup...$118.... and this sim is made for a HOTAS setup IMO. With the CEM it is very immersive. I never wanted to get a HOTAS setup because I didnt want to give up my FFB. When i got the X45 on sale for $49 about two months ago (before I found out about the refurbs) my original intention was to just let the stick sit behind my desk. I wanted a throttle to go with My FFB and i figured $49 was more intune with my budget than $130 or so for a Cougar or CH throttle. I was tickled to death when I relaized after an experiment that I could still use the X45 stick and not loose the assignments to pitch & roll on my MS stick. If you have the cash get both sticks.... now I have XP Home...so I honestly dont know if this would have worked in 98, ME or 2000...but it works GREAT in XP.

After a long time trying to convince myself I wanted the Cougar I bought the X-45.

I'm pleased with everything except the carnival ride look with the silly lights and all.

I would suggest it to any one as the happy medium betwixt quality and affordability.

One way I look at it as an old time flight sim fool: When it dies in the next year or two I can replace it without crying on the way back from the bank.

CH and TM would make me shed a bit of empty bank account tears at time of replacement.

LOL...too bad I dont get a commission.... I just plugged them in and went to thet FB contols menu. At first I assigned everything from there but then I realized I couldnt fully use the programming softwarre that way so i began to set up a profile. It is still a work in progress. I use the sidewinder SW (The SW profile is pretty much done) and the Saitek software although I have heard that Dauzhiemer's Saitek drivers are better. I have never tried them as the Saitek drivers worked ok for me but a while back there was a problem with th Saitek SW and XP.

Mons... I just got a Thrustmaster AfterBurner II for $59 USD (not the FFB model, which I think is about $99). So far, I love it... but consider the source: I'm pretty new to flight sims. I'm not so sure this stick would have all the features a more experienced simmer would want, but maybe someone like that could comment further. But, for that kind of money, having a separate throttle, adjustable stick tension and SHIFT button capability makes this a great entry-level stick.

And... it looks pretty badass, too >8)
