According to reports from the 1943 Interservice fighter conference, Army Air Corps test pilots were so impressed with the F4U that an attempt to use it as an escort plane in Europe was pushed to upper brass. Inter service rivalry killed the attempt, but Air Corp pilots loved the plane. Anyone have any more information on this or can verify this? Finally, how would Hellcats or Corsairs have done in Europe?

Don't know much about Corsairs escorting aircraft in Europe, but can say Hellcats and Corsairs could of took on the Luftwaffe.

The Corsair matched a 190 with speed except at higher altitudes where the 190 had an advantage, but only a very slight one. (Fw190-A5) But the F4U could fairly easily out manuver it and out climb it. Not to mention it was more rugged than the P-51. But of course, it didn't quite have the range of the pony. Other than that I would say the F4U would stack up better against the 109s and 190s of the Luftwaffe than the P-51.

I have read the same thing. Prior to Merlin engined P-51's, the USAAF was looking for a long range escort fighter...the Corsair was looked at, but dropped.

I think the Corsair and Hellcat would have performed well although high altitude performance was less in those aircraft than the P-47.

The Hellcat was used a bit in Europe:

"... The F6F served with distinction in Europe as well. USN Hellcats flew missions over France in support of the Allied landings. During the invasion of southern France (operation Anvil-Dragon), Hellcats flying from the escort carriers Kasaan Bay and Tulagi (VF-71 and VFO-1) peformed deep penetration attacks up to 100 miles inside France and flew CAP over the invasion fleet. Five Hellcat were lost to anti-aircraft fire. These same two squadrons also accounted for three Heinkel 111's and three JU-52 transports, shot down over France. They were denied an opportunity to engage German fighters, who fled at their approach. All 6 German aircraft were downed on August 19, 1944, D-Day +4.

... Fleet Air Arm Hellcat fighters achieved success against the Luftwaffe and Kriegsmarine. Royal Navy Hellcat I's (F6F-3) were involved in escorting attacks on the Tirpitz from April through August 1944. One of these missions, on May 9,1944, the Luftwaffe came up to protect the battleship. Some #800 squadron Hellcats from HMS Emperor took on the German fighters and shot down 1 FW-190 and two Bf-109G fighters. The Hellcats suffered one loss to the Luftwaffe and another to anti-aircraft fire. "

Sweet Indeed http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/11.gif

A 3rd Party Dynamic Campaign may use alot of NAVY in Europe. Say, if USA must Liberate http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/icon_twisted.gif Britain cos Germany takes Britain...But that can happen only if Ki~61s are used as 1940 He~100D, like Yak~1 was desperately used as Spit~1, before the AEP, when Spitless simmers actually Believed that Spitfire was made from a wood.

Corsairs also served in Europe with the Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm. They flew off carriers in the North Sea mainly participating in attacks on the Norwegian coast, and on the Tirpitz. I don't know if they engaged any enemy aircraft, but they were there.

whit ye looking at, ya big jessie?!?!
