I just bought the game despite its age as I had heard that it was very good. I have two main questions:
1. Is there a preferred Joystick for use with this game or is there one to avoid ??
2. Does anyone have an old IL-2 player guide for this game that they would be willing to sell to me ?(BTW - I live in the UK..)

Thanks for any help/advice given.

Best wishes,

RedAce38

Just to clarify:
You just bought 'IL2 Sturmovik'?
You didn't buy 'Forgotten Battles'?

I'll assume that you bought 'IL2 Sturmovik'.

Joystick:
Get a twist stick (so that you can control rudder). Personally I would stay away from the Logitech Extreme 3d series; the limited stick movement makes it hard to fly on the edge of the flight envelope, you will stall all the time and you will find it more difficult to hit with your guns. I guess with the other joysticks, you get what you pay for. Alot of people I met seem to like Saitek for IL2 (I play IL2 with two cyborg 3d gold joysticks).

Guide:
You didn't get the 80 page booklet and cockpit-pamphlet with the game? It's fairly necessary to have that unless you have a friend to talk you through all the menus, features, mission-types and plane set-ups, unless you are quite clever, methodical in trial and error, and have too much time on your hands.
Or are you after some other kind of guide? There is some extra information on the IL2 CD2 in pdf format. Apart from that, just read all the websites you can. Alot of Forgotten Battles information is still valid for IL2.

Patches:
You will want to search UBI and download the patches and free upgrades. They make a big difference

Hyperlobby and UBI Game service:
A handful of people still play IL2 online.
Download hyperlobby or install UBI game-service from the CD.

Big tip: If you like the game, go get 'Forgotten Battles' and 'Ace Expansion pack'.

Thanks for the help.. I've seen some sidewinder Joysticks on Ebay going cheap..are they any good?? Is it a twist stick? BTW it is the orginal game & not Forgotten battles but there was no manual included....I guess I'll have to print it off at work. The guide I was after was a Strategy guide book that I saw a long time ago....

Yes, I'll download the patches/upgrades.. What does FB & Ace Expansion pack get you ???

Thanks for the help..

Except for the guide on the CD in PDF format most things are equal (sorta) betweem FB and Sturmo... You can find a guide at
http://people.ee.ethz.ch/~chapman/il2guide/
and some more good info and advice at
http://webpages.charter.net/Stick_Fiend/FYL/FYLindex.htm

http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif as for what FB adds (well FB+AEP realy)
hmmm where Sturmovik (the original IL2) was Purgatory (look it up) FB is real Hell (and getting WORSE http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif all the time... so better get in shape and buy em http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Buy a Saitek X45 or a Saitek cyborg evo or a Micro$ucks FFB joystick... NEVER EVER buy a Logitech - I did http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif and am still ashamed...

DO NOT buy a joystick on ebay unless you get a guarantee AND it is BRAND NEW - most joysticks die because of inferior components or age...

Well let me tell you this....when you get Forgotten Battles, (the improved FMs and expanded plane set alone make it worth it)....and if you have IL2 you WILL eventually get forgotten Battles make sure you get the Aces Expansion Pack GOLD.

Joysticks...... I recommend a Saitek X45 if you cant get a Sidewinder FFB2.

USE THAT X45 STICK AS A BUTTON BAY!

I thought the manual was also on the game CD for the old il2 as well--just checked, and yes, it is, in the il2 folder, in English, French, German, Italian and Dutch, apparently in .pdf format. If your printer has the ink for it, you can print it out and put it in a loose-leaf binder.

I second the comments on the Logitech sticks-they're beautifully designed and work well for about a month or so in most cases. If they ever get their Quality Control straightened out, they'd own the market for twist rudder sticks, but...

I went from the MS Sidewinder P2 to the CH Products HOTAS, but that's a bit expensive for just starting out, so the Saitek advocates are probably right for you.

cheers
