Hello. I wanted to discuss one topic. And this topic is randomness in spells. I know that random skill wheel (thanks for saving UNrandom skillwheel) and random magic are "classic" but "classic" doesn't always mean good.

Why I am telling this? Because I've played a map on heroic difficulty two or three times. Difference between having and not having regeneration spell is difference between having 30+ gargoyles or having only 5-8 gargoyles. You can tell me - "it's not such huge difference". But it is.

I like all Heroes games and I do non like MM: H VI but least that game was good in one way. If you need any spell - you get it.

There are possible ways of solving this problem:
1. Let us choose one spell at the beginning of the game, that will be written in heroes spellbook. I do not want to go "only Jem" if I want to get regeneration spell
2. Let us choose one spell in mage guild if mage guild is specialized on this school
3. If you like random so much, let us "reroll" spells in mage guild
4. any other way. Just let us choose at least SOME spells that we will learn

Hi Rettani.

Thanks for your thoughts and input, I've forwarded it directly to the design team. I think there is room for improvement with regards to the magic guild, we just want to have th eright balance of 'random and directed' to keep the replay ability and dynamic non linear game play but ensure that it doesn't just become a frustration.

Thanks for quick answer. I don't mind randomness, but some spells are "core", "must have" or "are difference between win and loose". So it would be good to have a way to aquire this spells.

Would it be too easy? If you could choose one spell at the beginning and in every Magic Guild level...
Well in Heroes 5 some heroes had spells already in spellbook. Some of them were very useful.
Almost unfairly useful! :D

But think about this..
If Magic Guild could trade or exchange spells! Like once in a month new spells could emerge to the guild..
Maybe this is stupid idea... But it could bring new "dimension" to the game.

I don't know about "easiness" but mages do depend on spells. I can remember frustration after playing H V map as Sinitar and getting some stupid, unneaded spells in my town, and not getting one i desperately needed. It was much easier to play as "Might" than to play as "true mage" (this is main reason I practically never picked Dungeon or Academy in H5. If I want to be a warrior, why on the Earth I would pick race, that specialises at magic?).

I believe if you can select spells - the game would become too linear, like in H6.
If you get random - you NEED to THINK what to do and how to manage. Yes - sometimes - difficult, but need to train, even on heroic.
If magic is like in H6 - no need to think.
imho

Goodness no!

The more variables in this game, the better it gets. Getting what you want all the time will not make the game better by any stretch of the imagination. The "randomness" makes you adapt, improve your strategy and tactics, and keeps the game fresh.

I'm not saying there isn't room for improvement, but decreasing or removing randomness in the guilds would do much more harm than good.

Well, I don't understand you. Did you know that Heroes are STRATEGY game. And strategy is all about PLANNING. How can you plan anything if you have complete randomness in any aspect?

If you like random so much just pick random hero. Or random castle. Or random map position. Or go and play Heroes 3,4,5 with random skilwheel.

While I agree with you for many things like maps and encounters etc. I don't agree for stuff like spells. If you always have to reload battles to not be frustrated by (and this is the average reaction of RNG in key elements) strikes of bad luck (being lucky in a situation where you don't need it and being unlucky when you need it) it shows a very different position than a not so good spawning point / bad monster guards. '

While the second might strike a veteran more than a new player, it will be a unique situation to be in and gives you indeed also the feeling of a challenge and maybe even the hope that your enemy has it even worse. That is, for random maps. As I told - removing random maps could also turn these situations in pure frustration due to the knowledge and anticipation players who replay the map have.

The fix for this in the esport market / truly competitive game modes is sadly only homogenization and to take out many game elements. So I hope this will never be touched in heroes. Besides the creature and ability/spell balances the many game elements need to be looked at differently.

Hi Rettani.

What about suggestions made by your dear VIPs Elvin and JJ in example? Or what about this old HC post : http://heroescommunity.com/viewthread.php3?TID=41430 ?

I would gladly go and dip up more posts for you but I am not sure I want to go through the effort of searching while I'm around 90% sure it will get ignored anyway, not that I never shared them down the SC when it was open, mind you.
