Ever notice that anytime there's discussion on aircraft, it attracts trolls. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Too bad a thread just can't pick up momentum without the same asses ruining it. Sorry for asses, maybe too harsh, but...

Heywooood, I wasn't refering to you???

There are a couple of people who seem to be anti-american and the threads get bad every time they post. Everyone gets angry, short and testy.

And as you know I'm not american, so I'm not taking sides.

BTW, have you seen my ex yet?

Sorry aero! - Who's gotta really red face now?.. heywooood,bro...

I was referring to voids over the top criticism of the anti-American post.

My thrust was that its ok to have a different opinion on the Corsair - because it doesn't matter what the un-initiated think. whoa..

who's your ex?..

A lot colder than where you are in beautiful S.D.

My reference to my ex was because I had mentioned in an earlier post to you she just moved to your neck of the woods and I didn't want you near her http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

It's first nickname was "Ensign Eliminator" because of its nasty incidents due to it's high torque, however, I prefer the Japanese nickname for the F4U "Whistling death". Other nicknames.. "Hose Nose" "Hog Nose" and according to VMF-214's war diary, the less than flattering "Ewe".

Although a self-confessed A6M fan (with strong leanings towards Grumman Iron works aircraft) I would have to agree that the F4U is one sleek looking plane for being radial engine equipped. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I think it would have looked quite frightening as it made slashing attacks from on high!

Oh and btw the nickname "Hog" was not used during WWII. That originated with VF-54 operating the Corsair off the CV Valley Forge in the Korean War.

The same goes for the "Jug" for the P-47. During WWII it was referred to as the T-Bolt. Historians cannot determine where the term Jug originated from, but it became common in the early '60s.

I beg to differ. The nickname 'Hog' was first coined by 'Dog Ears' Coleman of VF-12, one of the first Corsair squadrons. After his first experience of the F4U, he exclaimed 'This plane is as co-operative as a hog on ice'. The moniker stuck.

Also note that Tommy Blackburn of VF-17 named his plane 'Big Hog'.

I worked with a gent one time who had flown the P47 in Europe during the war and he called it the "jug".

When the F4U first came out for service the US Navy didn't want them, siting visibility problems in taxi/and landing plus a bad bounce problem. So, the US Marines got them for land based AC. Now, the brits were getting hard up for carrier planes and they took some of them and worked around the bugs. Later, at some point before the war ended the US Navy did accept the F4U as a carrier AC, probably on the Essex and Midway Class CV's. IIRC, the F4U never flew from the deck of a Yorktown Class CV.

...I think Bob and Doug would fly a jug. They used to drink stubbies, very much like a small jug. I think they would wear a touque over their flight cap...and if they had a radio they like, would be playin "Rush" eh?.

...BIG PUNCHLINE..."so Take Off Eh?"

Seriously though, I can't wait to fly Oleg's Corsairs and such. How many versions (of Corsair) were there? I get a little confused with the folding wings? At lunch today I'm gonna go find a book with listings and pics of WWII aircraft. This game is making me read many books(Thunderbolt! and Malta Sitfire so far)...Damn learnin Eh?

CHEERS. (eh).
