Here's what I wrote to Ubisoft support:

So, I picked up Far Cry 4 on Steam sale and enjoyed it for about 15 hours. Everything was going fine until I manually saved my progress by one belltower before liberating it.
And then the game went to complete hell.

I can still play it but the game simply refuses to save anything. (As shortly explained here: http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198081788609/recommended/298110?tscn=1451865676)

Basically, my save file remains the same despite me trying to delete it or overwrite it in the same or new game. I am always started at the bottom of the belltower even when the game has "autosaved" some progress and I return to the game. Dying almoust always leads to a game crash, same with trying to save it manually. The game is simply broken for me.

It cannot be a virus either. I had a full scan on my computer and it came clean on everything.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling both the game and uplay (I even clicked "delete all save files") but the problem and the save file) still remain the same. Needless to say I'm getting extremely frustrated with this problem and, unless there is a magical way to fix it, I will have to demand a new working copy or a refund.

. I can tolerate the frame rate and occasional glitches if the game would just work for me. It did until this moment. Also, the issue with hard drive space has been fixed although I'm still unsure about how the hell that even happened.

I really hope that this issue gets fixed... because if it doesn't then you've lost one more customer.
---

I assume something went wrong when I somehow lost 800GB of my hard drive space while playing... that issue has now been fixed but the game problem still continues. It has been nearly three weeks and Ubisoft still hasn't responded.

Do you have any ideas how to fix this? Un-/reinstalling Ubisoft, game or save files made no difference to the situation. The same save slot still remains.

Verify your game files ... DO THIS AT LEAST TWICE and RUN STEAM AS AN ADMINISTRATOR WHEN DOING SO

also if your running windows 10 always launch both Steam as well as Uplay as Run as Administrator \ this change may be needed on some Windows 7 , 8 and 10 systems as the game saves are written to a program files location , if the game has no Admin access under your WINDOWS User Account Control it can't write the auto saves .

1.To verify your files if you bought the game thru Steam ..\EXIT Steam ..right click your steam icon ..select run as Administrator

launch Steam

go to your Steam games library

right clik on far cry 4

select properties

select local files

select verify Integrity of game cache

it takes a few min to do but its faster the redownloading your entire game , if its only a few files that were corrupt or installed incorrectly .... this in many cases will fix your problems

2. your hard disk losing 800 gig of Space could indicate a problem with the Hard Disk itself ( they do not last forever) i'd suggest your run windows chkdisk to make sure you do not have problems with the drive itself

3. Unplug any and all game controllers you have plugged in and try running the game with just a Keyboard and mouse

4.BACKROUND APPLICATIONS may also cause the game to not launch properly and you may need Exit out of them, or reconfigure them to work properly with Far Cry 4 known apps that can cause this are

A. EVGA PRECISION
B. MSI AFTERBURNER
C. Riva Tuner Statistics Server
D. DXtory
E. Motionin Joy
F. Some Anti Virus or Firewall software (depends on settings) < Check your settings
G. MSI true Color
H. Evolve gameing client
I. AMD Raptr \ AMD Gaming Evolved
see this thred to possibly fix issies with afterburner causeing black screen
http://forums.ubi.com/showthread.php/1012250-Afterburner-Farcry-4-Crash!?

Please see this Page where it mentions Backround Applications and how you can try to see if one is possibly causeing your issiue with the game NOT starting or hanging
https://support.ubi.com/en-US/FAQ/9/4277/pc-far-cry-4-connection-issues/kA030000000eio0CAA

5.Make Sure you installed the UPDATED version of the UPLAY client , Steam always installs and OUTDATED version
you can get it here https://uplay.ubi.com/

teemupets,

Hello and welcome to the FC4 forums! WID's advice is solid (as usual), and I second the part about contacting support (http://support.ubi.com)if WID's suggestions don't resolve the issue.

PS. I edited out the activation key you posted in this thread. WID is also right about that -- not something you want to give away to others.

also sir if you have a problematic save file let me know

you may want to delete your save , if it is corrupted and start a new game
or see the troubleshooting tips section on Steam http://steamcommunity.com/app/298110/discussions/0/627456486417358966/

and download Akunamattata's backed up save files . they worked fine for me here and yes i did test them for any Virus or malware and tried them here
you should be able to find one in his archive that will get you close to where your progress was in the game

i do recommend that you SHUT OFF the Uplay Cloud save setting in the Uplay client to use them tho , it also has other benefits if you do this . like being able to create multiple saves and replay any mission

i'll post a read me i been working on on that subject below ..hope it helps you find your fix
MY READ ME FILE :

by default all saves are saved in your Ubisoft game launcher folder
there is a different location between the Steam and Uplay only versions of the game

with the Steam version your save files go to
C:\ Program files X86 \ Ubisoft \ Ubisoft game launcher \savegames \ * a folder with a long series of letters and numbers ,varies from system to system *\ 856

with the Uplay only version they go to
C:\ Program files X86 \ Ubisoft \ Ubisoft game launcher \savegames \ * a folder with a long series of letters and numbers ,varies from system to system *\ 420

for any backed up save games to work without a problem you MUST open uplay first
go to settings
uncheck the option that says (shut it off and keep it off ...it is EVIL)

Enable Cloud save synchronization for supported games

you probably want to do this anyway as the Uplay cloud has proven to be unreliable in the past and if it sends you a corrupt save file it can really mess up your game

(that happened to me before with FarCry 3, ( i lost all progress had to delete my saves and start the game all over again ... i was not happy.. it was the only way to fix it , ever since then i back em up to a thumb drive )

if you ever need to create multiple saves this is also possible once you shut off the cloud save option

(i made backups to a thumb drive that has just about every mission of the game so i can replay any one at any time , just copy and paste it to the right location)

see this http://steamcommunity.com//sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=379620279
as well as this video by 04AM <( he has the u play only version in the video )
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E8cTOvbgyrs
(again thank you for making this video when i asked you to 04AM)

thats why his save files are in folder number 420 and not like the steam version which uses 856 , i do not know why Steam changed the default location for the save files ,on their version of the game , i only know they did .

your save files in your 856 or 420 folder should look like (depending on the version of the game you have )

again steam version = 856
Uplay only version = 420

1.save
1.save.upload
2.save
2.save.upload

one is a check point save (an auto save) the other is the one you create
but each save consists of those 4 file names

hope this helps , you can also try to download akunamatta's backed up save files.
he let me post the link in the troubleshooting tips section .. its a lot of saves that cover about 90% of the game , and you should be able to find one in his archive that will get you close to the point in the game you were at .

and if you ever need to back up your saves and move to a new PC that is also possible
see this link (this covers many ubisoft games )

Steps completed:

- tried verifying the game files as administrator. The verification was successful, but... well, nothing has changed.
- tried deleting all local game files. The same save file still persisted.
- game said that I need to download uplay to play the game. There already was a downloaded uplay on the computer which I had created an account on and linked it to the game.
- tried installing "new" Uplay. First time it failed, the second time it started to load but ended up saying that "there already is a newer Uplay downloaded."
- tried creating a new game to overwrite the old save file. The game crashed after The Prologue was completed. (Ajay Ghale tries to walk through a mountain and doesn't respond to any commands.) The same save file still remains.

Also, the 800GB loss of hd turned out to be "a minor" stacking problem with McAfee. The program has since been removed and the space restored.
Also also, I received a mail from Ubisoft saying "don't give up on Kyrat..." They clearly had my stats from the game but the play time was marked as - as there would not be any. Could that mark something?

But yeah... any new ideas or suggestions concerning this topic?
