Much too much of an unknown to tell.

I've done well on carrier landing on other carrier ops sims (I can crash on a deck, no problem), so I imagine that once I get the hang of carrier based a/c in PF I'll be fine.

The thing is, most players will never have the patience to go through a routine of establishing a/c performance parameters like a real pilot would, so the seas will run red with blood from the shattered corpses of PF pilots for a while

I`m 120 percent sure I will crash and burn the first couple of times.

The way I fly, I'll be lucky to crash into the sea anywhere near the carrier, let alone crash into it. Landing? Forget about it!!

well i still suck at carrier landings with LOMAC in the Su-33
i only made 3 succesfull landings out of 12445 attempts http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif i always smack on the deck
or im going to slow,to fast and sometimes i dont even make it to the deck and stall into the big ocean

but i think landing a jet on a carrier is a little harder but still it wont be easy i think

It will take more then 10 attempts to land on the carrier, be sure http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I think I will land OK the first time. As long as I'm patient and circle around if things don't look right. I've found that carrier landings are much easier with WW II planes than jets (at least in the sim world.) WW II are so much slower and have a much lower stall speed and that makes it easier just fly right onto the carrier. If the weather is bad all bets are off though.

Yeah, perfect... in F4u, with 2x1000 Lbs + 6 rockets and 100% Fuel, at night in a storm. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/52.gif http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/crazy.gif
I think will take some work in D3A1 empty or in Zeke, with no wind.

My drool cup is full anticipating a Corsair carrier landing. Fortunately, PF will continue to generate a/c until I get it right or turn in. Am looking forward to this release.

287 traps on three different carriers (and I only scared paddles-once). That was with only 4 wires too, mind you. Not the bajillion that WW2 carriers have.

08-27-2004, 02:38 PM
I've already failed http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-mad.gif

I flew the game at E3 and missed the wires completely. When coming around i hit the tower. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/35.gif

Game was still being worked on so maybe I'll have a better chance with official release.

I reckon the first time I try I'll do it correctly. This will raise my confidence thus causing over confidence on the next 20 attempts where I'll crash and burn.

People are not responding to the poll questions the way I thought they would. I considered it a waste of space when I created it, but had nothing better to do with my time...lol.... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/59.gif

My only Carrier Experience is the Su-33 landing on the Admiral Kuznetsov. I'm pretty good at that and all, but there's one thing that makes it a lot easier- ILS!!!

...something we dont have the luxury of in PF.

I'm pretty sure I'll get it first time. However by first time I mean first flight I try to land on a carrier. I will likely make several aborted attempts before I finally set her down on the deck. I'll also do some flying from land bases first to get the feel for a couple planes. I do have a fair amount of flight sim experience with carrier landings, I've done the Su-33 in LOMAC, the MiG-29K in Flanker 2.5 and all sorts of WW2 planes in both Pacific Air War and Aces of the Pacific. So it really isn't anything new to me. I'll just take my time and make sure my first attempt is done right.

Yes, I will most likely crash the first 200 times I try it. But I'll eventually get it right...I hope.

On the first try I'll probably bounce off the
deck, hit the tower, kill the captain, explode
and start a raging fire that will sink the ship.

On the fourhundredth and ninetyseventh try I
might possibly survive... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

You just need to get your approach right.

Coming in with 300KM/h, flaps and gear out won't get you on the deck. However, you can get your aircraft on a normal airfield like that.

Just come in fairly steep (for the vision) and at low speed, 150 or 160 km/h. Practice on normal airfields to get your touch down spot-on first. Touch down is everything, do it in the right place and with little or no bounce. That should work allright.

hell no .. I`m gonna skid over the deck in a nice fireball sort of way. Haven`t really played online in il2 yet, so I`ve been using autop to land ( shame on me ) but have done emergencylandings and they have by some weird reason gone very well. Cant wait to check it all out though...

On my 1st attempt I was lined up perfectly - I had the perfect altitude and was bleeding energy nicely coming into glide real smooth. Perfect!

I was actually thinking to myself:- "I wonder if anyone else made their first landing or will I be the first..."

So I'm easing her down gently (Seafire MkIII) - you know when your concentrating that much that your tongue is lolling out of the side of your mouth- and I press the arrestor hook key - except I don't; I actually pressed the wing-fold key instead. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/35.gif CRASH!!!

I nearly wet myself laughing!

Answer: No. Not even remotely.... Currently, I can't get close to the ground without exploding. Much less trying to land on a pitching, rolling, frying pan of doom! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

I had an opportunity to make my first attempt at the Blackpool Flight Sim Convention in June. Failed miserably - made worse by the fact that Oleg was looking over my shoulder!

Delighted to learn that there will be another Convention next year in Blackpool and at a much larger venue. Can't wait.

08-28-2004, 01:26 PM
I'll prolly make my first one that is if I remember to drop the tail hook. After that I will continuely crash into the deck. Beginners luck runs out you know. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

Dug up this old thread after making my first carrier landing in PF (first try) and first time since CFS2. Felt good.

Anybody else make their first carrier landing on the first try? Is there a prize for the sloppiest carrier landing? I was below the deck, heading for the Island and then in shocked amazement when it caught the wire. Good fun.

I flew too high on my first attempt but the second attempt caught the wire, bounced off the deck, leveled out and slammed into the deck. One broken engine and a faceplant into the wildcats dashboard was the damage.

I nailed it the second time (both time in a FM-2).Now the Corsair was a bit harder.I thought I boltered so I apply full throttle and tried to lift off only to stop a bit in the air and smack into the deck. That was a funny sight when watchin the trk.

11-14-2004, 06:02 AM
I've made first or second attempt on every plane I've tried, though sometimes with a couple of practice approaches. I've frequently messed up subsequent attempts though http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif.

11-14-2004, 06:20 AM
First attempt with a zero, approach too low and flat, bounced, hook not down and skidded off the front of the moving carrier into the drink. Moving carrier then put it's bow over my floating zero. Next time, stalled into stern of carrier. Read notes, on three point landing needed to snag arrestor hook and am okay at it now. Just need paitence and usually two attempts.

11-14-2004, 09:23 AM
I started with confidence, and I managed to land on my 5th attempt, unfortunatly I forgot to lower my wheels. It then took about 20 more tries to land, but since then things have clicked and I've only burned once in the last 50 or 60 landings. Now I've set my sights on catching the first wire, only done that once so far. This was all with cockpit on.
The hardest part for me was figuring out the right height to come in at so I could get the flare out and drop the tail hook.

11-14-2004, 12:12 PM
I got it in the first try at the moving carrier.. but at the stoped carrier... 11 atempts til success.

11-14-2004, 01:13 PM

If "any landing that yuo can walk a way from is a good one", then... I did allright... I could walk away from it, but some parts of the plance didn't make it.

On my second attempt, I made a beautiful landing... only... I forgot to extend my landing gear (was manual, I assumed automatic)...

I don't want to discuss the landings after those, but currently I am doing all right, I guess...

Good luck!

11-15-2004, 08:15 PM
Hehe, got it right on the first time, F4, moving carrier. Woohoo! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif It was great. I think the approach was a bit flat but it worked out okay.

(My doctor says a little bragging now and then is healthy... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif )

P.S. I just watched the track and I see I caught the first wire. But isn't the 3rd wire considered a perfect catch?

11-15-2004, 08:45 PM
3-4 goes to get my first carrier landing with a Val, that was the first plane I tried landing on. Now I can get it pretty much every time no matter the plane. Haven't tried the Seafires yet.

11-16-2004, 12:31 AM
The F4F has been the easiest to land on the carrier. Got the first one right and haven't missed yet.

Now the corsair thats a different story. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif I think I've hammer the deck so many time I have lost count. Very few sucessful landing in that plane so far. I'll get two in a row correct and then I think I've got it mastered http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif Right.< sarcasm > I do alot of touch and goes with that plane http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif
can't seem to get that elusive hook to catch. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/cry.gif Oh well practice practice. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Here is where RBJ tought me trim on a slider, as you reach 170kph slide the trim up then hold the nose on the tyre marks holding 170 till almost at the carrier, cut the throttle before going over the stern and as the wheels are about to touch at 160 raise the nose slightly, works for me (mostly).
A carrier landing is pretty much a controlled crash inasmuch as you have to just about stall onto the wires. At 170kph or 110mph approx, the corsair is flying at about 155kph or 95mph it's falling (pretty much).
For a good instructional video go here.
Cheers, Ibis.

11-16-2004, 09:56 AM
Thanks to your posts about speed and trim, I got the Corsair on deck - second try.

Corsair wings fold ok but couldn't get the Wildcat to fold. Didn't the wings rotate and fold back on the Wildcat?

Everyone misses their first jump, err... carrier landing. Mine was in a coop on HL. With, of course, an audience. I took three passes on putting an F6F down on a CVE, missed every time. The fourth time I almost got it down, bounced and didn't get the wheels, flaps and airspeed back up in time to go for five. In my credit, I ditched just to the left of the carrier and didn't get run down like some poor SOB didn't in one of VFC_Host's missions last night.
