G'day to you all. Been visiting these forums for quite some time now and decided it was about time to join in on the discussions http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
Been taking to the virtual skies for several years, started with Jane's US Navy Fighters and went through many others including Falcon 4, CFS1, WWII Fighters, Longbow 1 and 2, Jane's F/A-18, and finally up to IL-2 and FB Aces. (Wow, just listing all those brings back memories.)
Anyway, introductions aside, the mod announcment actually has something to do with Jane's WWII Fighters as well as Forgotten Battles. Ever since I played the original IL-2, I was hooked. Without doubt it was the most comprehensive WWII flight sim I had played. But there was one area that lacked somewhat in my opinion, Audio. Now, although I can't import new weapon sounds and get some recorded engines in FB, I CAN change the radio chatter. My objective is to convert the chatter from WWII Fighters, over to FB. Now, technically it is a very, very simple task, all that must be done is extracting the chatter from the archive used by WWIIF, change the names of the wav files, add a RIFF header, and replace FB's radio chatter. The first step was simple, all that is needed is a simple batch file to extract the .wav's from the WWIIF archive. Step 2 however, is where things get..interesting, lol. You see, FB has 2,934 .wav's for the German, British, and U.S. pilots and ground controllers. WWIIF has 9,824. What's worse, they are unlabeled, so I will need to manually go through all nine thousand of those .wav's, listen to them and label them afterward. For the British and American voices, it's not so bad..just very time consuming. The German voices are where it gets tricky as I have a very limited vocabulary in deutsch. However, given the way the WWIIF dev team archived the .wavs, it is actually been relatively easy to get the jist of what they are saying...approximately. For instance, P1BDA007.wav is one of the voices played for when voice actor 1 of the british nationality makes a statement about being shot through the canopy of his aircraft. In comparison, P1DDA007.wav is the same meaning, it is just a slightly different statement in deutsch.(IE: For British "Good Lord I've been shot!!" as opposed to something along the lines of "S**t I've been shot!" in deutsch).

Although it will be a tremendous hassle to convert some of the WWII radio chatter to the limited chatter that FB will allow, I think it will be very much worth it. I'm sure if anyone here has played WWIIF they'll likely agree. It'll be a long haul, but expect the British voices to be released first, Germans second, and Americans last...due to the order of importance relating to FB http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Gah, long post, my apologies http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Templar, welcome to the forums. You sound like yet another contributor with infinitely more energy than myself. You kids are starting to make me feel old. Go right ahead though, I'm sure I'm speaking for many when I say I appreciate your dedication, and look forward to the result.

Kozhedub: In combat potential, the Yak-3, La-7 and La-9 fighters were indisputably superior to the Bf-109s and Fw-190s. But, as they say, no matter how good the violin may be, much depends on the violinist. I always felt respect for an enemy pilot whose plane I failed to down.

Howdy and welcome. One thing though have you heard the RAF voice pack from ExtremeOne? You may change your mind on dedicating yourself to doing the RAF stuff first.

Hmm, I didn't know there was an RAF voicepack available, do you have a link by any chance?

Downloading them as I type http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Although i've put a good deal of effort into renaming and indexing the british voices thusfar, a change in plans wouldn't be a downer http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

If this voice/campaign pack turns out well I'll be upping the German voices to top priority, then U.S., then i'll finish work with the British to give people another choice in voicepacks if nothing else. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Found it look here http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums?a=tpc&s=400102&f=23110283&m=101101154

Tehy had community members from several regions get to gether and make them. They did a awsome job of it. Very immersive. But what your doing will be greatly appreciated by the rest. I am looking forward to the USA voices for sure. I had investigated this myself a while back but got frustrated with understanding WW2 fighters I suck at the older software stuff like DOS

I think his North and south has the japanese voice pack of sort in it, aswell.

Thanks for the links Toad, much appreciated. The pack is very good, I especially like the added touch of engine and weapons fire in the background on some of the comms. Definately putting the british voiceovers on the backburner as they are well covered in that pack. Kudos to all involved in its creation. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Welcome aboard Templar_4450th

One thing I'd like to point out though is that the credit for the voice-pack should go to NTESLA aka THX-1338 and all of the voice actors from around the world.

My contribution was perhaps of less significance.

Also there is a Japanese voice pack avaialabel too - look for "North and South" (link in my sig)

And I'm being forced to give away a bit of a secret here - NTESLA is working on something for the US voices.... I can say no more than that at the moment other than to say that another 'extreme' project is coming soon...
