The Spit is a wonderful and handsome aircraft, but like another gorgeous aircraft, the Corsair, it's very distinctive wing gives it an out of proportion look to my eye, from certain angles.

The A-36/P-51 family, now...there is an aircraft that looks correct from all angles to me.

Well, if you had a razorback, the Spit might actually win...... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Spit has never done it for me. Mebbe it's the weak chin, like the Hurri. I like a/c with character, especially aggressive. So my favorites are the P-47 razorbacks and Bf-109. They look like they mean business when they're headed your way. P-40 also has this quality to it...... I like it. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Btw, I think that P-47 in the comparision pic is further away than the Spit, it's just so big it seems to be closer with no visual reference. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

While I love my P-47, I can't help but be honest that the P-51 is very beautiful plane. So I voted for the P-51, because as someone else stated she has all the correct angles, she just exudes sleek and agile. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif The P-47 has alot of character, but she is a bruiser and the Spit/Pony are beauty queens. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I have to vote Spit, just on the nostalgia factor. Being from one of the colonies it's symbolic of so many things associated with airwarfare.
All round comercial appeal would have to go to the Mustang though.

Oleg86, nice pics. I find that the Yak 9 is a bit thick in the middle, you know the fuselage before the tail assembly? Nice fighter anyway. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

The Spitfarter has to be the ugliest plane ever built. It looks like some 1930's racing plane, not a WWII fighter.

The Focke Wolfe is the best looking plane ever made. It demands attention, and looks like it was made for business. There is nothing frail looking about it.

Spit is pretty but doesn't look like it's meant for dogfighting.

For allies, its definatly the P-47. The mustang wins beauty loks for sure but the P-47 just looks so badass. It totally means buisness.

For the axis, I agree with Fehler. The 190 looks like it means buisness as well and is a very stricking aircraft. The Messerschmitt evil...like a dog that's gonna snap at you or something.

This is one is easy for me, but most will probably not agree with my choice. I agree with Cajun when he said he likes planes with character.

That's why I choose the P-40 Warhawk...specifically the later models such as the L, M, and N.

That deep chin is absolutely perfect for a big shark mouth emblazoned with pearly white razor sharp teeth! The P-40 just looks like it was built to fight anything. It was incredibly durable, and makes the P-51 and Spitfire look incredibly frail. I don't know why, but the P-51 and Spitfire have never done it for me. They just look too dainty. They are pretty, but nothing compared to a Warhawk in my eye. A P-40 just looks mean.

Well your choices are sharp no doubt, but they all look like models not fighters, In comparision to a Tough looking P-40 and I'm of late never really ever gave it a glance before , am thinking the Forked Taile Devil is putting some character in the mix aswell.

But of course who doesn't like a Fast Cheap and easy Model http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I would term the Spit and the P-38 and the FW190D elegant and exotic, very pretty airplanes.

But I like my fighters to look like they kick butt. The Jug and the Hellcat are my choices because they look like they mean business.

I went with the P-47.

Earlier spits had only 3 prop blades and nasty looking exhausts.. late spits had a big ugly spinner and warped propotions..

yeah must agree Spit http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/11.gif ( although I DON'T like the CW version - looks like somebody has done a hatchet job http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-sad.gif although it handles nice in game) then P51.

Honourable mention must also go to the Bf 109 (a "clean" one though, with retracting tailwheel) I find that the 109's with the fixed tailwheels, G6, 10 and 14, much as I like them, look rather naff - nice clean lines and then whoops, somebody forgot to put the tailwheel away http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-sad.gif Not seeking to offend, just my preference

From a strictly elegance viewpoint I have to go with thr Reggiane Re.2005. Really nice lines without giving a sense of fraility.

Now if your talking about impossing then its a toss up between F4-U/190's.

They both look lethal just parked. Reminds me of when your walking by a house and there is a big pitbull in the yard, not the one that comes snapping and snarling. The one that just gives you a glance and then acts like your not there. You can almost see the bubble caption by its head that says " Go ahead, step into my relm of influence.....puss"

If I had gone against either one in RL just the sight alone would have given me a bead of sweat.

I completely agree with you.
P-40 is the most strikingly aggressive flying war machine (now only the Warthog can compete http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif).
I would add that also FW.190A looks tough.
Spitfire, Mustang and Yak-9 (and its double Yak-3) look agile and elegant, but frail too.
Bf.109 is ok, except that the E serie looks too archaic and lowers the average of the family.
P-47 and F-4U look just like fat wine barrels. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

S'a shame I couldn't include more options really ain't it? I used to prefer Merlin Spitfires, but now the Griffon has it's mitts 'round me throat and I can't escape. You've all made valid points, except the one 'bout the Spits and P-51s looking dainty... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_redface.gif

P-47s, '190s, P-40s, these all look like they WANT a fight, just sitting there. The Spit and P-51 look strikingly beautiful, confident, and deceptively graceful on the ground, but pi$$ 'em off and you just KNOW you're gonna regret it. You know the best time to judge how lethal a plane looks? When it's right on yo' a$$ about 50m away. You check, in this situation the P-47 just looks a joke, sortta like the big fat guy you annoyed, and who you could get away from all day. Get a '109, Spit or P-51 on your tail, and you break into a cold sweat - you've HADDIT! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Ki-84, MiG-3U and Ki-46 are three I hadn't though of before, and are all very attractive fighters.

Finally, when I look at a P-40 I can't help but realise that this is a very mediocre plane I'm dealing with, no matter how threatening the noseart...

But that's just my humble opinion. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

"But that's just my humble opinion"

Thankfully it's just you. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

As far as the P-40 being mediocre.....lol.

I needed a good laugh. Thanks for keeping me on my toes.

If you ever saw this behind you I guarantee you wouldn't be dismissing it's capabilities as shells from the six "point fifties" in the wings are flying all around you. Better go ahead and kiss your *** before you hit the silk. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

http://www.jg53-pikas.de/Ballen15.jpg

On another note while I said I prefer the later P-40's with deeper chins the early models have a similar but at the same time different look. They look more "racy" if that makes any sense with the long hood and very pointed nose.

http://www.maxwell.af.mil/au/afhra/wwwroot/photo_galleries/aaf_wwii_vol_vi/Photos/00910460_023.jpg

And finally a nice study to compare the rugged kick-*** looks of the P-40 with the dainty look of the P-51. You guys do the math. (Keep in mind I don't have a problem with the P-51, I just prefer the looks of the P-40.) The Warhawk simply looks more like it wants to fight.

Early spits look graceful but later war spits look aggressive but they still look good. The XIV with clipped wings and teardrop hood looks like a fighter plane should, sleek and aggressive.

The P47 looks like it means business and the P51 and Yak9U also look good but the Spitfire wins in my mind.

In my mind there is one thing the Spitfire does win hands down, thats the best sounding plane whether its the Merlin or Griffon.

Ah, if we're going to include twins, the Mossie for sure.

Interesting you prefer the looks of the Griffon Spits, Huck. Most Spit purists seem to think they lost the classic Spit look. And the CWs are really ugly. The eliptical wing is the key to the look of a Spit. They look maimed http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

As Bud Anderson mentioned in an interview, if you just went on looks the P-39 would have been the best plane of the war but looks in this case were very deceiving.

Lol, that's it exactly.

Regarding the sound also, I utterly agree, the Merlin and Griffon sound purrfect.

Re: P-40s, I think that subconsciously the shark's mouth design contributes more than you think to the whole 'pugnacious' look, but I get your point Cooper. I do think the P-40 looks more like it wants to fight, but that doesn't mean it's any good at it... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif Basically, the P-40 is your average, brash, aggressive street-mugger, whereas as the Spit and 'Tang are quiet, confident martial-artists or hitmen. Which would you least like to have as your deadly enemy? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

The Mustang looks quietly confident, like the Spit, it knows what it's doing... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/icon_twisted.gif

And like I said, I did used to prefer the Merlin Spits, but the Griffon ones, to me, really mean business. That sleek nose with the tell-tale fairings above the exhausts just exudes power and punch. I agree about the wings though - cw versions look neat from some angles, but the 'full-ellipse' is the only one for me. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

There have been some very good looking planes mentoned, and some of them I find rather not to my liking, but to each thier own. It feels like this is turning into a Spit and/or Stang Vs. Everything Else discussion. I personally have never gotten into the mystique of the Spit or Stang, so they don't capture my attention like they do for some. I hope people continue to post great pics of a/c they think look good, becuase for me, most, but not all aircraft look good in their own way.

Well obviously if it's already within gun-range you're not in a very healthy position, but I mean if one is trying to close on your tail, I find it quite easy to out-manoeuvre/ out-climb in my Gustav-10.

You want sleek but mean, balanced with a beautiful elliptical wing, but not 'dainty' like a spit?

I give you the Hawker Tempest... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif The Tempest does look cool, but just to add one thing, if I said that the Spit and Hurri have weak chins (my opinion http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif ) then the Tempest looks continuously
out of breath. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif huff, huff

The first AC model and plane I fell in love with when I was a youngster, was also the first AC that I built when I returned to AC modelling:

Then built:

And I've got another one sitting on my work bench that I'll eventually get to once I'm away from playing this sim. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

What's funny is that the 109 is the plane I really love in the sim, but I've also built more of those:

Indeed the Spitfire has beutiful lines (not the Griffon ones w/o all those bumps, though the Mk 22 looks very good from angle) - but I just the miss the character of a WARplane, the one built for the kill, the shot down others in the most efficient way, with no remorse, no regret, no mercy.. the Spit just doesnt looks like this, it lacks that look.

Well, the Bf 109 on the other hand... it looks like an overdose of adrenalin and pure evil agressiveness concentrated in such a manner that it could just blow out anytime! It just looks like a bigcat just before jumping on its prey.. built for the kill, any other aspect is unimportant, the fusalage is like a single long bullet with the characteristic big spinner.Even on the ground it looks like being taken out of its enviroment, ready at any moment to climb into the skies where it belongs, where it hunts.. It just looks sinister, like a warplane, a tool of war..

109s vs. 190s... the latter is workmanlike, solid. The pair kinda reminds me of a Dobermann and a Rotweiler, one is sleek, fast and dangerous on every inch, the other bull-like, and makes up with deadly brute force for the lack of finesse..
