I just got owned by a Storch last night...I might be in need of exorcism...

I dove down on his six and right as I was about to fire his rear gunner put a short burst into my P40s engine, rendering it inoperable and setting it ablaze. I blew up shortly after...no chance of survival http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-sad.gif
Perhaps I should have attacked from another angle http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

This is just a warning that those storch gunners are viscious and to look out for them...lol

Overmodeled Storch + P-40's "glass jaw" engine = bad news for the P-40.

Just like the Mk 1 hurri parked on the six of an He111...don't do it.

I never feel as bad getting hit by a Storch as a U-2V.

Makes me feel like some kid knocked me off with a paper wad and straw.

Well, the U-2V, it turns out, is a tough old bird. Early in my FB days, I spent several minutes stalking a lone U-2V in a campaign, getting under the tail in my Emil, and going for the wings. I burned most of my ammunition (not very impressive), then made a close pass in desperation...and got hammered.

Now that I'm a veteran, it doesn't happen that way. I don't go after U-2Vs.

The effectiveness of the AI gunners has always annoyed and amazed me. The pilot may be a Rookie, but the gunner is always an unflappable, gimlet eyed (what the hell does that mean, anyway?), Davy Freakin' Crockett who will hit your engine and/or cockpit the moment it enters within 500m of his cone of fire , no matter what maneauver either aircraft is performing.

The ones that really frost me are the 'tunnel' gunners. In real life, these were called "scare guns" because nobody ever hit anything with one. In Il-2 and FB, though, those b*stards will kill you every time. It's the biggest immersion killer in the offline game, and they're never gonna fix it.

cheers

just attack from one side and you can do that all day (subject to availability).

The Storch will go down nicely if you attack from the side (as mentioned) or head-on. Personally, I wouldn't choose to attack any plane with a tailgunner from the six. And yeah, this baby's top speed is less than most planes' stall speed so keep it hot!

lol - I've been killed by one of those devils too - came head-on in my F2 & got a few hits but Vasilij Zaitsev in the rear blew my head off as I passed him.

Don't feel bad.

The last documented air to air combat between Luftwaffe and USAAF forces, according to what I have read, was an unarmed Piper Cub versus a Storch. The pilot and the observer shot down the Storch with their M1911s. (.45 pistols) http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/blink.gif

The U-2VS was a very tough plane. It could take a lot of hits and still keep flying. It was a chosen plane of the Night Witches of the 46th Taman Guards Regiment. However, one thing that's not modeled in this game is that it easily caught on fire. Regular tracer bullets could wreak havoc on those planes, especially HE rounds. Since it was all fabric and wood, once they caught on fire, the crew had about a minute to put out the fire or they'd go up in flames. The Night Witches weren't supplied with parachutes until 1944, so if their plane lit up on fire, they had to bring it down quick.

Hehe I was just thinking that lol. I mean were getting open cockpits. It would be cool as a backup when you run outta ammo to be able to whip out yur trusty .45 and reach yur arm out the side and shoot the bugger with it...

Are you going back to 1914 here?

Isn't there a mild bug with biplanes that make their wings unreasonably strong? Like the engine only models monoplanes, so there is a bit of a cheat on the DM for biplanes?

I'm not even sure it's a rumour, it's a rumour of a rumour of a rumour.

(all Americans get annoyed by the way I spell 'rumour' with a 'u'. Manouever.)
